How to get to the nickname Winnie?

We’ve narrowed our girl list down to 2 names and [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] is the 2nd choice. It’s so sweet and cute, feminine without too many frills. The problem is, we definitely see it as a nickname and aren’t comfortable using it any other way. We can’t find any longer or more formal names that can be shortened to [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] that appeal to us.

Not really interested in [name_f]Gwen[/name_f] names.
[name_f]Love[/name_f] [name_f]Arwen[/name_f], but it seems too [name_m]Lord[/name_m] of the Rings.
The “fred” in [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] stands out to me too much.
And that’s all that we’ve been able to think of so far!

Any suggestions? Throw any possible way to get to the nickname [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] at us.
Thanks.

[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Winona[/name_f]? I have a friend with the name and it really fits her spunky, yet sweet personality.

[name_f]Willow[/name_f]
[name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f]

I love this post. DH and I love the nickname [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] but [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] sounds a bit too clunky next to [name_f]Lilla[/name_f] and [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f], our 2 daughters. Hopeful to see some good suggestions on here.

[name_f]Winona[/name_f] makes me think of [name_f]Winona[/name_f] [name_m]Ryder[/name_m]. I don’t see [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] coming from [name_f]Willow[/name_f]. [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] doesn’t sound feminine enough to me.

Sorry, we’re obviously being picky (but this is a good thing to be picky about!). Thanks for the suggestions so far!

Yeah, Sarab. I enjoy some clunk, but [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] is a bit too clunky, especially for you with your other daughters’ names.

We just thought of [name_f]Rowena[/name_f]. It seems a bit awkward to say though, doesn’t really roll off the tongue.

[name_f]Elowen[/name_f]
[name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f]
[name_f]Bronwen[/name_f]
[name_f]Morwena[/name_f]
[name_f]Olwen[/name_f]
[name_f]Rhonwen[/name_f]

and also, plain old [name_u]Wynn[/name_u].

My favorite “[name_f]Winnie[/name_f]” names are [name_u]Winter[/name_u] and [name_f]Elowen[/name_f]. Any -wen name could get you the nickname [name_f]Winnie[/name_f]. I like the suggestions of [name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f] and [name_f]Olwen[/name_f].

My daughter’s name is Cerridwen (welsh muse of poetry) [name_f]Willow[/name_f] and her aunt calls her [name_f]Winnie[/name_f]. [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] is pretty too.

I like [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] and just discovered [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] and [name_f]Arianwen[/name_f] (and also just discovered that [name_m]Jimmy[/name_m] [name_u]Fallon[/name_u] just named his baby [name_f]Winnie[/name_f], how lame of me). Is the C in [name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f] pronounced as an S?

we pronounce it Care-ah-dwen but I like [name_f]Sarah[/name_f]-dwen just as much.

I was also going to suggest [name_u]Winter[/name_u]. If you find the “fred” in [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] too prominent, there’s also [name_f]Winifrida[/name_f] (a variant).

I would either say [name_f]Willow[/name_f], or my favorite [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f]. I love [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f]. It think is so precious and beautiful. I am not a fan of [name_f]Winifred[/name_f]. It seems out dated and I can not picture it on a little girl.

There are some good ones to consider here! Thanks for the suggestions!
I still like [name_f]Arwen[/name_f]/Arwyn the most, though. IS it too [name_m]Lord[/name_m] of the Rings? I feel like it is, but maybe some nameberries can convince me otherwise?

[name_f]Edwina[/name_f]
[name_f]Owena[/name_f]
[name_f]Winsome[/name_f]
[name_m]Bowen[/name_m]

I love [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] too. I definitely dont feel like its too lord of the rings. When i hear the name, the first thing I think of is how beautiful and classy it sounds, not the lord of the rings connection. I think [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] is adorable, though I prefer the name [name_f]Gwyneth[/name_f] as a first name. I love the suggestion of [name_u]Winter[/name_u]. Its so fresh and spunky. I also adore the nn [name_f]Minnie[/name_f]. Not sure if you’d like it or not, just an idea.
Good luck, I hope you find the perfect name.
[name_f]Welcome[/name_f] to nameberry!

Well, LOTR is the first thing I’d think of with [name_f]Arwen[/name_f], but that will fade with the newer generations. It’ll always be there a little bit though since it’s such a unique name.

Have you considered [name_f]Anwen[/name_f]? Less LOTR and also the possibility of [name_f]Annie[/name_f].

What about [name_u]Rowen[/name_u] instead of [name_f]Rowena[/name_f]?

Thanks, rhiatayler. Been lurking a while and decided it was time to jump in. [name_f]Minnie[/name_f] is a great Aunt’s name but does have all the same stuff going on as [name_f]Winnie[/name_f].
I’m glad you feel that way about [name_f]Arwen[/name_f]! I would love to be able to use it and my husband is convinced the LoTR associations are forgotten. Still not sure though…

We really like the name [name_u]Rowen[/name_u] but it seems too boyish. I want to like [name_f]Anwen[/name_f]. It’s such a simple replacement for [name_f]Arwen[/name_f]. But it just seems to lack some of the mystery and sparkle of [name_f]Arwen[/name_f].

I think [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] is a more feminine spelling than [name_u]Rowen[/name_u], if you like it better spelled with the A. I also think [name_u]Wynn[/name_u] is beautiful on its own. You could also consider [name_f]Gwen[/name_f], [name_f]Gwyneth[/name_f], [name_f]Guenevere[/name_f] or [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f]. Or [name_f]Wendy[/name_f], or [name_u]Winslow[/name_u]? You could even get away with [name_u]Quinn[/name_u].
