Hi all! In the surprise of the century for us, we are expecting identical twin girls on our fourth “baby.” Our three kids are Victoria Jane, Henry Edward, and Eleanor Alice.
There has been a lot of discussion here about how Caroline and Charlotte don’t work as sister names since they both derive from the same root, Carolus/Charles. I agree with this, but do identical twins change the calculus? They used to be one embryo, so I’m thinking maybe their names both being classic, English royal names from the same root might work? Thoughts?
Congratulations! The names work together and with their siblings! I think the names’ sounds are different enough that the similar origin is not a problem.
For me, them being identical would put me off using Caroline and Charlotte even more. They might get lumped together, mixed up, or assumed to be the same throughout their lives (by people who don’t know them enough and aren’t bothering to) and I don’t think it’s fair to reinforce that by giving them names which have the exact same root.
Still, that’s just me - they do sound different enough, and there are probably plenty of people who don’t know they come from the same root
I don’t think it works, and I don’t see how them being identical twins would change anything - they’re as much individuals as any other siblings would be. It makes as much sense to me as naming twins [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and [name_f]Miriam[/name_f], or [name_u]Anne[/name_u] and [name_f]Anna[/name_f].
Certain names are too close, such as [name_f]Anna[/name_f] & [name_u]Anne[/name_u], [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] & [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f], etc. However, same origins don’t bother me, especially with twins. If I met someone with twins named [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], it wouldn’t bother me in the slightest! Most people you come across probably won’t know the origin, especially if they go by two different nicknames, like [name_f]Lottie[/name_f] and [name_f]Lola[/name_f]. It feels so very endearing to have the same origin on identical twins. For myself, I would consider using [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] and [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], even with the same origin, so [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] don’t bother me in the slightest! [name_f]Hope[/name_f] my somewhat-repetitive paragraph helped! I would go for it!
I personally wouldn’t use both [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], for the reasons you give. Plus like @Greyblue I would prefer to give identical twins completely different names for individuality reasons.
However, those are just personal preference and I think few people IRL will know they’re from the same root.
Other than that, the names sound good together — both classic, sophisticated choices — and I like that, although they share first and last letter, they start and end with a different sound.
They go really well with your older kids’ names too. Good luck!
I personally don’t think it would be that big of a deal if you were to use Caroline and Charlotte together! Because their sound is quite different (with the hard c vs the softness of char-), I really don’t think your average person would find the shared root a problem (also don’t know if they would notice)! Also all of your kids have really lovely names, wishing you the best
I think [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] are great sister names! For identical twins or sisters that are years apart. Yes, they do originate from the same name, but they are different enough that it’s a nice similarity, something like [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] and [name_u]Charles[/name_u] would be too close but [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] are perfect! And even though they share a first initial, they start with different sounds (the c in [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] being pronounced like “k” and the ch in [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] being pronounced like “sh”) which makes them even more unique from each other! To be honest, I myself have considered using [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] together if I ever have twin girls, so I’m a big fan of this pairing! [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] also fit in perfectly with the style of your other children’s names! I think it would be a great pairing! And your other children’s names are so lovely too!
I normally would stay away from naming sisters or maybe even fraternal twins [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and Charlotte* but I appreciate your identical twins biology calculus and am on board with this as an idea now! The clincher is that the names don’t sound much alike to me and don’t lend themselves to the same nicknames**. Go forth and do it!
*I just mean that this isn’t something I would do myself or advise anyone else to do but at the end of the day I wouldn’t be super bothered to meet non-identical-twin sisters named [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], I’d just wonder if their parents knew the origins
**I love the idea of either [name_f]Callie[/name_f] or [name_f]Calla[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], if you’re looking for one
[name_f]My[/name_f] mom’s first AND middle names are feminine forms of [name_u]John[/name_u] and she’s never had any issue with it. I think having twins with names of the same origin is perfectly fine. [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] are beautiful and go very well with your other kid’s names.
Congratulations! I think [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] are lovely together, and go beautifully with your other children! I would not be bothered at all by a name having the same root. I would personally much prefer that to names that rhyme or sound very similar.
I agree with some previous posters, I think they would be even more problematic for identical twins. They will look the same and will be constantly mistaken for each other, treated like one person instead of individual people, always get lumped together… I don’t think they would want to carry the same name. They used to be one embryo, yes, but they are different people now.
[name_m]Even[/name_m] if [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] didn’t come from the same sources they sound similar enough to get misheard as the other. Sorry!
I think them also sharing an initial is what would make me stay away from using them as twin names; also because they’re both very similar in their first syllable. I think something like [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and [name_f]Isabel[/name_f], for example, would be fine as they’re distinct enough even though they share the same root name but I think I’d want something a bit less match-y than [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] for identical twins.
I think it’s really cool! Identical twins with names form the same root is fascinating. Super great, I think. The names sound different enough from one another that I don’t picture it being too confusing. [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] are beautiful names—and they go so very well with their three siblings’! So gorgeous, all around.
i think having their names derive from the same root wouldn’t be a good idea, especially because they’re identical twins. because they’re identical, and would have names derived from the same root, they’d essentially be the same people and having their own identity is important.
Personally I’m not a fan, because you’re basically calling your two children the same thing in my mind, but people do name their children the same thing, I’ve met several sibsets where there’s say an [name_m]Emmanuel[/name_m] and [name_f]Emmanuella[/name_f] in the family, or similar to that. So if you like it cool, I just find it a bit weird.
Congratulations I think [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] & [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] work perfectly well together. I think they sound & look different enough from each other. The average person would have no idea that they share the same root name. This is not a [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] & [name_f]Nicole[/name_f] kind of pairing by any means (and I actually know twins named [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] & Nicole!)
I also like that the potential nicknames are fairly different from each other as well - Cara/Carrie/Caro & Charlie/Char/Lottie. Plus, [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] & [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] sound great with your children’s names.
