Is Agatha that bad?

I saw a post on BabyCenter where someone was trying to find a middle name for the name [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] and everyone in the comments was saying how awful the name was. Now, I know how BabyCenter can be with names, but am I missing something? Is it really that bad? I do like it but my boyfriend isn’t a huge fan. If he did happen to come around to it, it would be on the list.

Would the reactions the poster got on the name [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] be the same reactions of people in real life if I’d introduce my daughter or she’d introduce herself?
I wouldn’t want to give my child a name if she’s going to get made fun of or see others cringing when she introduces herself

Thoughts?

No. [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] is a beautiful name and reminds me of the brave character of Soman Chianani’s “Academy of Good and Evil” and of [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] [name_u]Christie[/name_u].

I prefer [name_f]Agathe[/name_f] myself though.

The first thing I want to say is that, regardless of how “bad” a name really is, it will never be received as harshly in real life, or even virtually regarding a real baby, as it is when discussing it online. People often use the anonymity that the internet provides to share every thought they have, because to them, it has little to no consequence (it certainly has consequences for those on the receiving end, though.) In reality, a kid won’t be an outcast because they have a normal name some people don’t like.

Now, on the topic of Agatha… I used to think it was “that bad.” But I was also a young teenager (a demographic known to have strange, strong, unfounded opinions), and now I am more mature and able to realize that there are a plethora of styles of names out there, and even if they aren’t my taste, they are still valid names. Thanks to the [name_m]Simon[/name_m] [name_u]Snow[/name_u] series by [name_f]Rainbow[/name_f] Rowell, I have even come to like [name_f]Agatha[/name_f]. I think the same would happen for anyone who met your lovely little [name_f]Agatha[/name_f]. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if people weren’t sure what to think at first, once they met a precious little human bearing the name, they would forget what could’ve been wrong with it in the first place.

So I like [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] (reminds me of [name_f]Aggie[/name_f] Cromwell from Halloween Town growing up) but because it still comes across as dated I probably wouldn’t use it personally but I like the name itself and don’t mind when people use it.

I love this name! It’s very high on my list.

I cannot imagine anyone actually saying anything negative in real life. What I could see happening is a lot of ‘oh that’s different’ comments or ‘I haven’t heard that in a long time’. But I don’t think people would say anything when presented with a child, with the name [name_f]Agatha[/name_f].

I think [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] is gorgeous :dove:

I really like [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] she’s nostalgic, wholesome, cosy and warm. [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] has the lovely meaning ‘good woman’ and the sweet nickname [name_f]Aggie[/name_f]. I actually think [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] is ‘cool’ you can imagine hipster parents who live a converted loft within a fun part of [name_u]London[/name_u] somewhere like Shoreditch, they dress in vintage clothes, are vegan and take their daughter [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] to ukulele lessons.

I find [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] a really pretty name!

It reminds me of golden agate stones, and also has a nice literary connection with [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] [name_u]Christie[/name_u]. [name_f]Aggie[/name_f] is a cute nickname, too!

It might ring a bit “old-fashioned”, but for me (& many others, I think) that’s generally a good thing.

I like [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] very much, but it is a stereotypical witchy name.

I have a bad association with [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] (Worst Witch) but I don’t mind it as a name. I wouldn’t use it but I have a soft spot for it!

I knew a teen [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] growing up, and people reacted fine to it.

[name_f]Agatha[/name_f] is clunky-cute and fits the vibes of names like [name_f]Olive[/name_f], [name_f]Martha[/name_f], [name_u]Alma[/name_u], [name_f]Harriet[/name_f], [name_f]Henrietta[/name_f], [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] etc

I think you should ignore these petty awkward people. They are deliberately trying to upset people. They get their kicks out of arguing and being hostile to others seeking genuine advice and comments online. No one has the right to tell you or anyone else, that a traditional, long-standing name like [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] is awful. It simply isn’t. I have had the same problems with sites argueing that my choice, [name_f]Ruth[/name_f], is horrible and harsh, even that people of other countries may not be able to say ‘th’ and would mistake the name for [name_m]Rufus[/name_m]! Its ridiculous. If someone else can’t pronounce th, that’s their problem, and [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] is a very well-known worldwide used name. [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] is also. Get off these sites and just come here, where people are genuine. Those people simply aren’t worth your time.

People can be scoundrels especially online!

I knew a man Agatha growing up. I liked her and she made the name seem cool to my teen mind. Now I see it as a spunky vintage name. I have to say I didn’t love and still don’t love the nickname, Aggie. It doesn’t sound nice to me and reminds me of “agony” or “aggro”.

I would probably go for Astrid, Esther or Inez/Inès (Spanish/French for Agnes) over Agatha to avoid Aggie. These are names I put in same category - beautiful but somewhat awkward/unsettling.

Good luck!

No, not at all! [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] is sweet and it feels like she’s been coming back for years now. I do like [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] more myself (probably for the dreamy [name_u]French[/name_u] pronunciation!) but [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] is nice. If it matters… [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] is already very much in-style in Brazil… I sponsor several kids in [name_u]South[/name_u] [name_u]America[/name_u] through a sponsorship organization so hear of a lot of other kids in the program, and I come across Agathas with regularity. Guess that doesn’t mean as much if you are not in Brazil… but it is taking off in other parts of the world.

ETA: I agree that the [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] [name_u]Christie[/name_u] tie is pretty cool

It’s not a name that I would personally choose (it’s just not my style), but I don’t think it’s that bad. Regarding the comments, [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] is not a popular name (in English-speaking countries), and some people on the internet can be small-minded when it comes to names that aren’t popular/fashionable. But I find it unlikely that anyone is going to say something negative to your face about the name.

No it’s not. I can see it perhaps raising a few eyebrows because it would be unusual on a little one. It does have a very patrician feel - I like fusty / clunky so while it’s not one of my own favourites it’s stylistically aligned with a lot of my taste, and I’d be delighted to meet a little one with this name. I can’t imagine it would be met with teasing among the child’s peer group as they will have no frame of reference, it’s not even very common among the older generations so for a lot of them she’d be the first one they’d ever met, no preconceptions. It’s nice

I find nothing wrong with the name [name_f]Agatha[/name_f], it might sound a little old (by this I mean like a name that would have been used lots during grandma’s generation) but that doesn’t make it sound bad or ugly/unpleasing. I think [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] is quite attractive, sophisticated and has a strong beauty to it. [name_m]Even[/name_m] the nickname [name_f]Aggie[/name_f] is cute and sounds a bit more modern.
