Is Luna really that popular?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] berries!

So I know we’ve probably all seen Nameberry’s most searched names of 2020 and that [name_f]Luna[/name_f] topped the list, but how popular is it really? I’ve seen it used here and there on lists and I personally know 3 cats with this name, but I’ve never met a little girl named [name_f]Luna[/name_f]! I’ve loved this name for a long time and I’m just hoping its popularity wanes significantly before I have kids.

But, what do you think? Is [name_f]Luna[/name_f] really that popular? TIA!

I personally have never met a [name_f]Luna[/name_f], but it seems to be a name that’s on the rise and getting popular.

This seems to be my impression of it too. I think its popularity is really dependent on location.

The only [name_f]Luna[/name_f] I know of is [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_u]Legend[/name_u] and [name_f]Chrissy[/name_f] [name_f]Teigen[/name_f]’s daughter [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_u]Simone[/name_u]. And yes, I know several cats with that name lol.

It currently ranks #16 in the US, so statistically pretty popular. I don’t personally know any little [name_f]Luna[/name_f]’s, but that’s really not an indication of what’s popular right now as I don’t know too many small children. I have come across several on Instagram.

It really depends on where you live. It’s not that popular in [name_f]Ireland[/name_f], for example.

I’ve never met a [name_f]Luna[/name_f] in my entire life. However, it’s currently getting really popular so I won’t be surprised if I meet any [name_f]Luna[/name_f]’s who were born in my sister’s generation. But, it’s not popular in some places (ex. in [name_u]Scotland[/name_u] its #62, in Spain its #68 and in Portugal its #66).

I’ve never met or even overhead a child called [name_f]Luna[/name_f] but it is my guinea pig’s name and the name of a friend’s cat. I’ve also heard several dogs being called [name_f]Luna[/name_f].

There were over 1000 babies called [name_f]Luna[/name_f] in the UK last year so I do get the feeling I’ll be hearing more of it

I’ve seen the name a lot at my job (a hospital) with the peds and newborns. I’ve never met a [name_f]Luna[/name_f] in my personal life tho.

There were 62 [name_f]Luna[/name_f] born in my city last year but I haven’t met one yet. As a comparison the most popular name here was given to 241 girls and is [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]. Know several of those!

I’m located in Maryland and I work in a very large pharmacy that fills over a thousand prescriptions per day and has an ungodly amount of patients, and I have only met 1 [name_f]Luna[/name_f] over the course of 4 years. I think it’s a great name and you’re good to use it!

I have a [name_f]Luna[/name_f]. There’s one other [name_f]Luna[/name_f] in her school but she’s a couple of years older. I also know another 3 Lunas that are around the same age as mine but they live in the UK (we live in the Netherlands now).

When we named her we’d never met or knew of any others!

I work with school age children and there aren’t very many named [name_f]Luna[/name_f], however I know more than few who have younger siblings named [name_f]Luna[/name_f]. So I would definitely say it’s popularity has really shot up within the last 2/4 years

Hi there.

I have yet to meet a human child named [name_f]Luna[/name_f]. But basically every dog is named [name_f]Luna[/name_f]. And a few cats too.

I’ve never met one but I know it’s very popular in states with high Latino populations.

I haven’t met a [name_f]Luna[/name_f] IRL yet but I do hear it incredibly frequently for dogs!

That doesn’t put me off at all, but I think people often give their dog the “brave” choice they’re not quite ready to give to a human child, but fast-forward 5 or so years and that slightly quirky feeling name will have really started to catch on. I’ve seen it happen with [name_u]Charlie[/name_u], [name_u]Willow[/name_u] and [name_f]Bella[/name_f] before, so I recognise the pattern

I do love [name_f]Luna[/name_f] though. It has such a lovely simple, pure sound.

I know of 3. All under the age of 6. It’s popular here in the UK.

I’ve never met one, but I’ve seen it a lot on Instagram and on everyone’s name lists. It’s common but I don’t think it’s gotten anywhere to the point where it’s overused

I don’t know anyone called [name_f]Luna[/name_f] but it does seem to be talked about a lot so it wouldn’t surprise me if the name does become popular. I think [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] will be more popular than [name_f]Luna[/name_f].

Luna has such a pretty sound! [name_u]Bright[/name_u], clear, and strong yet sweet. I’ve met one [name_f]Luna[/name_f]; she’d probably be in her early teens now. I do think the popularity varies quite a bit depending on where you are; in the U.S., for example, she’s #16 nationwide but barely makes the top 75 in my state. So there must be some pockets of major popularity, but I’m not in one! Based on the national popularity chart, it does look like its ascent has slowed a little bit in the past couple of years (although it’s continued to rise). I think it’s a lovely name regardless of the popularity!
