Jabez or Jael or ? We’re team 💚! baby #7 ideas?

We are halfway through and keeping baby’s gender a surprise! :flushed: This is my first time being mentally patient/strong enough to do that, lol. But the children would love the surprise, and their wishes are giving me resilience.

So we have a girl name & boy name picked out, but I’m beginning to think we need to try out others. I’m just not sold on either. Back to the drawing board!

Here are our current children (from 13 to almost 2):

Amaré Elyse (am-uh-ray)
Job Marcellus (We call him Joby)
Sélah Carys
Boaz Apollos
Shiloh Moses
Noémi Hesed (we call her Emi)

So the top boy name, to this point, has been Jabez Kephas (Kay-fus). My husband loves Jabez, I am not as settled on it. I had a theme with the long “o” sound for boy’s first names, and an “s” ending on middle. But I DO like it…it’s jazzy & unusual, like the other boys, and has a good meaning (story behind it in the Bible). And I LOVE Kephas. It is “rock” in the Greek form of the Aramic Kepha, from what I understand. The one we often see is Cephas, but that is the Latin translation and I don’t love that as much.

Other boy ideas that “fit” us:
Kepha (if we would use as first)
Gideon
Mordecai (call him Cai)
Kairos (Kai)
Theophilus (as a middle)

open to suggestions!

The top girl name is Jael Agape. We have a theme with our girls of soft & girly first names, and a meaning of “love” somewhere in the name. I have toyed with Jaél to match the accents of the other 3, but it seems to confuse people on how we’re pronouncing it (Jay-Elle, not Ya’el or Yah-AYL). So, I’m not sure I’d use an accent, but just plain, many have said they’d say “jail”—which I hate!. But don’t love spelling it Jaelle, Jayelle, or Jaël—so I’m at a loss. I love Agape, but don’t know if it sounds too clunky in English, and is soft as our other 3.

Other girl ideas:

Salomé
Serayah (would honor my grandma Sara, in a way)
Rhema (Ray-muh…would honor my mother who passed away in 2022)

Open to ideas!

I love [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m]! It’s rooted in rich history. [name_m]Kairos[/name_m] is also an extremely cool name that I’m using for a fictional character, so I’m a fan.

[name_f][/name_f]

Other ideas: [name_m]Raphael[/name_m], [name_m]Zechariah[/name_m], [name_m]Dov[/name_m], or one of my personal favorites, [name_m]Omri[/name_m] (might be too close to [name_f]Noémi[/name_f] and Amaré though),

[name_f][/name_f]

I personally wouldn’t have known Jaél would have a different pronunciation than [name_f]Jael[/name_f]. I would still say Jay-Elle. But that all depends on if you care about keeping the accent to match the other girls’. I adore [name_f]Serayah[/name_f], especially with the tie to your grandma, but I wonder if it’s too visually similar to Sélah or even [name_f]Shiloh[/name_f]. A non-S name might be best.

[name_f][/name_f]

I’m very fond of Zipporah/Tzipporah, so I’ll throw that out there. [name_f]Rivka[/name_f] may or may not be another honor name option for your mother.

@avenmaide thank you for your amazing & thoughtful comments & suggestions!

Love the suggestions Zecheriah and Dov! I would def suggest these to my tough crowd (our children have a fine palate on names! lol) and I think they’d enjoy thinking through them.

Also I really like Rivka! My name is Rebekah, and my mother always loved the “Captivating” (tie/bind) meaning. But this is touching on that without being overly obvious, since most ppl don’t know it’s the Hebrew form of my name! Zipporah is one I’ve always loved too…Sephora version, actually. But I think of the cosmetic store so that might kill it for me. I don’t know though—it’s so lovely, I should probably think twice!

Good point on Serayah. I was thinking same about Rhema (the ray at beginning perhaps too close to my daughter Amaré—Ray at the end).

So many great ideas. Thanks again.

I love your children’s names, they’re all stunning!!

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Jabez[/name_m] Kephas is a great option – my only hesitation with it is the repeating J-b pattern with [name_m]Job[/name_m], but that might not bother you. I also absolutely love [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m] & [name_m]Gideon[/name_m] for y’all, with [name_m]Gideon[/name_m] slightly in the lead just because I feel he matches the softer vibe of your other names a little better.

[name_f][/name_f]

A few other suggestions:[name_f][/name_f] [name_m]Eliphaz[/name_m], [name_m]Tobiah[/name_m], [name_m]Gilead[/name_m], [name_m]Japheth[/name_m], [name_m]Enoch[/name_m], [name_m]Eliezer[/name_m], [name_m]Jethro[/name_m], [name_m]Abner[/name_m]

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Jael[/name_f] Agape is very pretty as well, but you’d definitely encounter pronunciation issues, so if that bothers you I’d move away from it. I absolutely adore [name_f]Salomé[/name_f]! She’d also honor your grandmother [name_f]Sara[/name_f] in a way, since [name_f]Sally[/name_f] is derived from [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] & could be a nickname for [name_f]Salomé[/name_f].

[name_f][/name_f]

A few other suggestions:[name_f][/name_f] [name_f]Sarai[/name_f], [name_f]Tamar[/name_f], [name_f]Peninah[/name_f], [name_f]Tirzah[/name_f], [name_f]Rhoda[/name_f], [name_f]Zillah[/name_f], [name_f]Keturah[/name_f], [name_f]Lois[/name_f], [name_f]Hosanna[/name_f]

I think [name_m]Jabez[/name_m] fits very well with your other kids, and I love [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m] as well. (It’s always been on my list but doesn’t flow well with our last name.)

[name_f][/name_f]

Other boy ideas:
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Simeon[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Thaddeus[/name_m]

[name_f][/name_f]

I know a little [name_f]Jael[/name_f] and I think you’re better off not trying to add an accent anywhere. If you can’t get it to gel, I think [name_f]Salome[/name_f] and [name_f]Rivka[/name_f] are both beautiful! And [name_f]Rhema[/name_f] for your mother. :yellow_heart:

[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]

Not name-related, but we always found out boy or girl until our seventh too! It had never been appealing before, and then it was so fun.[name_f][/name_f] We didn’t find out again for our eighth.

Awww congratulations!! I remember your last two birth announcements fondly. All your kids have lovely names.

I may be back later if I have more thoughts, but I wanted to say I just heard a birth announcement for a little Tekoa, and I thought that might be up your alley. It even has the long O of your other boys. You probably recognize it as the town of the prophet Amos (oh have you considered Amos too?) and the parents said it means “gathering at the sound of a trumpet” (have not double checked that myself.)

I was going to float the idea of doing as friends of mine did and modifying Jael to Jaela (jay-la), no pronunciation difficulties, but then I realized that makes it rhyme with Sélah  They also have an Eli0ra nn Ellie, if that appeals?
I would second the idea of Zipporah/Sephora. Tried to sell my husband on Zipporah my last pregnancy and settled on using it as a middle (but then we had a boy, so it’s still waiting in the wings.) Gorgeous name.

Big congrats on Baby 7! I love your kids’ names.

If it’s a boy, my preference is

Gideon
Mordecai (I do prefer Malachai/chi)
Kairos

I like Jabez but there seems to be half a dozen ways of saying it - including with a Y and th, Jaybes, Ju-bez, Jay-bez etc. I also see it as a smoosh of Job & Boaz. Re Jael, I am reluctant due to “Jail” but if I were to use it, I much prefer it for a girl. I go imagine she’ll get “jail” but Jay-elle is very pretty.

I’m a little am unsure on Kephas - it’s strong & handsome but probably bring from a medico family - anything I’ll was or condition with cepha/kepha in there usually isn’t good. But I do like the name - it’s nice when second syllable longer/the emphasis - Keh-FAHS. Could it be in top spot? You could still probably use Kai?

I like Theo but not “philus” at the end. Nice meaning but I’d stay away from some of the darker “philia” associations.

Other names:

Girl

Aviva
Margalit
Ayala
Ketzia
Kinneret
Doveva
Reina
Rivka
Liora
Esther
Zora
Tova

Boy

Lior
Orian/Ori
Oren
Tomer
Raviv
Asher
Zevulun
Remiel
Raphael (too popular?)

Hope this helps! Even just to confirm your choices.

[name_m]Jabez[/name_m] is so cool!

[name_f][/name_f]

I like the idea of [name_m]Gideon[/name_m], Kepha, [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m] and [name_m]Kairos[/name_m] too!

[name_f][/name_f]

Kepha [name_m]Theophilus[/name_m] or Kepha [name_m]Amadeus[/name_m] came to mind

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Kairos[/name_m] Kepha / [name_m]Kairos[/name_m] Kephas would be cool (so long as your surname doesn’t start with K…)

[name_f][/name_f]

A few ideas:

Elionai

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Jael[/name_f] Agape is charming

[name_f][/name_f]

I love [name_f]Salome[/name_f] and [name_f]Serayah[/name_f] (though I prefer sp Seraya) [name_f][/name_f]- [name_f]Rhema[/name_f] is intriguing too!

You have such a distinctive and lovely style in naming your children. I had fun thinking of ideas that could possibly click for your family (as a nice distraction from morning sickness!)

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Boy[/name_m] name ideas
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Dov[/name_m] (“bear”) is great; how about [name_m]Tov[/name_m] (“good”)?
[name_f][/name_f]I also love [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] (“God is good”), which has your long o and -s ending all in one.

[name_f][/name_f]

Others that also have your long o and -s ending:
[name_f][/name_f]Kleopas / [name_m]Cleopas[/name_m] / [name_m]Cleophas[/name_m] (“glory to the father”), who met [name_m]Jesus[/name_m] on the road to [name_m]Emmaus[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Timothy[/name_m] / [name_m]Timotheos[/name_m] (“honouring God”)
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Nicodemus[/name_m] (“victory of the people”)

[name_f][/name_f]

Other -s endings:
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Titus[/name_m] (“strength”, “honourable”, “title of honour”)
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Barnabas[/name_m] (“son of encouragement”)
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Jairus[/name_m] (“God enlightens”), synagogue ruler whose daughter was healed by [name_m]Jesus[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Silvanus[/name_m] (“of the forest”), variant of [name_m]Silas[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Emmaus[/name_m] (“hot springs”), place name

[name_f][/name_f]

Names with long o (some might not be long depending on pronunciation)
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Beno[/name_m] (obscure Biblical name “his son” or “son of the south”, could also be a short form of [name_m]Benedict[/name_m] “blessed” or [name_m]German[/name_m] “brave as a bear”)
[name_f][/name_f]Hazo (“vision” or “prophecy”), a nephew of [name_m]Abraham[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Obed[/name_m] (“worshipper”), son of [name_m]Boaz[/name_m] and [name_f]Ruth[/name_f], ancestor of [name_m]David[/name_m], could also be short for [name_m]Obadiah[/name_m] (“servant of the LORD”)
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Jethro[/name_m] (“excellence”), father-in-law of [name_m]Moses[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Othniel[/name_m] (“lion of God” or “strength of God”)
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Simeon[/name_m] (“he has heard”)
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Joash[/name_m] (“fire of God” or “God has given”)
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Yohan[/name_m] / [name_m]Johan[/name_m] / [name_m]Johanan[/name_m] (“God is gracious”)
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Kore[/name_f] (obscure Biblical name meaning “to call, call near, or proclaim, derived from the word for partridge), several men by this name were Levites, with various roles such as overseer of tabernacle services, overseer of offerings, and gatekeeper at the tabernacle/temple (Psalm 84:10!)
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Zalmon[/name_m] (“shadow” or “his image” or “peace”), one of David’s mighty men or a variant of [name_m]Solomon[/name_m], also a name of a mountain
[name_f][/name_f]Kohath (“obey”, “gather into strength”, “hope”), ancestor of [name_m]Moses[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f]Not Biblical, but [name_m]Jerome[/name_m] (“sacred name”, Jeroham is a similar-sounding Biblical name.)

[name_f][/name_f]

Great names but maybe too common for you?
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Joel[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Joseph[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Noah[/name_m]

[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Obed[/name_m] [name_m]Silvanus[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Zalmon[/name_m] [name_m]Tobias[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Kore[/name_f] [name_m]Timotheos[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Jerome[/name_m] [name_m]Silvanus[/name_m]

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Girl[/name_f] name ideas
[name_f][/name_f]If you aren’t sure about [name_f]Jael[/name_f], how about [name_m]Reuel[/name_m] (ru-el), meaning “friend of God”. In the Bible, it’s a masculine name, but I knew a young woman by this name, and I thought her name was so lovely!

[name_f][/name_f]

Other Biblical names:
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Ariel[/name_f] (“lion of God”)
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Havilah[/name_f] (“to dance”), place name, known for its gold
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Keziah[/name_f] (“cassia tree”)
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Damaris[/name_f] (“woman of strength/gentleness”)
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Dinah[/name_f] (“God will judge”)
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Eden[/name_f] (“place of delight”)
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Miriam[/name_f] (“beloved” or “wished-for child” or “drop of the sea” or “bitter”) could also be a love name for you, as could any [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] / [name_f]Mary[/name_f] variant

[name_f][/name_f]

Other love names:
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Esmé[/name_f] (“esteemed, beloved”)

I remember you posting for some of your older children [name_f][/name_f]- nice to see you back here.

[name_f][/name_f]

It might be that you’re unsettled because you have to hold space for both boy and girl possibilities this time. In any case, I think both of your top choices in [name_m]Jabez[/name_m] and [name_f]Jael[/name_f] are strong options if you decide to come back to them.

[name_f][/name_f]

Your boy ideas are wonderful and all work in my eyes. I’m particularly drawn to [name_m]Kairos[/name_m], possibly because you’ve talked about it in the past, followed by Kepha/Kephas.

[name_f][/name_f]

Your girl ideas all seem to carry the same sounds found in your two eldest daughters’ names. I’m not sure they quite work. [name_f]Love[/name_f] them for middle names though [name_f][/name_f]- especially [name_f]Rhema[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]- but that would mean leaving Agape for another potential daughter.

[name_f][/name_f]

Some girl suggestions because your boy list is so solid. Soft and lyrical with or without an accented letter:

[name_f][/name_f]

Solène
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Léonie[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]Éliane
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Josée[/name_f]

Thank you for the feedback!

[name_f][/name_f]

Yes, I’ve def thought of how similar [name_m]Job[/name_m] & [name_m]Boaz[/name_m] sound to [name_m]Jabez[/name_m], esp that “j/b” sound. Doesn’t bother me too much, but it might get me confused when calling for them, as I get older, ha.

[name_f][/name_f]

I do love [name_m]Enoch[/name_m] as a suggestion! That has been on my list for years, and I will add it back! Thank you!

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Sally[/name_f] is so cute, but a former association probably rules that out.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Love[/name_f] your girl suggestions, esp [name_f]Hosanna[/name_f].

[name_f][/name_f]

Thanks again!

Thanks for the input! I do think [name_m]Jabez[/name_m] fits our vibe, but I’m loving all these ideas! [name_f]Do[/name_f] love [name_m]Simeon[/name_m], but since I’m pretty[name_f][/name_f] set on Kephas, I doubt I’d do [name_m]Simeon[/name_m] Kephas —-although it is def an established full name! Ha.

So glad you mentioned waiting & how fun it is. I got through it yesterday and it’s still a mystery, so I’m one step closer to self control giving us that fun experience! Ha. [name_f]Hope[/name_f] I enjoy it.

If you’re concerned about [name_f]Jael[/name_f] being pronounced jail, maybe you’ll like [name_f]Brielle[/name_f].

It’s a short form of [name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f]: [name_m]God[/name_m] is my might.

I absolutely love [name_m]Tekoa[/name_m]! We actually just read that passage in [name_m]Amos[/name_m] the other day, and it made me pause because it’s the name of the road of our first little business venture, an air bnb near our home. We felt it was a call from [name_m]God[/name_m], and so it’s kind of crazy to see that road, that passage, and that suggestion all within the same time frame. I adore [name_m]Koa[/name_m] as a nickname (as sweet and boyish as [name_m]Kai[/name_m] is to me, with a great appeal to match my other boys whom we nn [name_f]Joby[/name_f], [name_m]Bo[/name_m], & Shi). It ALSO matches the long O theme, and sounds amazing in flow with Kephas, in my opinion (Tekoa Kephas). I love the call of the trumpet :trumpet:[name_f][/name_f] idea…I’ve even heard it expressed as a symbol/call to unity.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Can[/name_m] you tell I like this? Ha ha. I had just noticed it the other day, like I said, but wasn’t thinking in terms of names!!

[name_f][/name_f]

Yes, did consider [name_m]Amos[/name_m] but it didn’t seem to quite fit.

[name_f][/name_f]

Anyways, thanks!

Thanks for your comments! I agree that [name_m]Jabez[/name_m] does seem a smoosh of [name_m]Job[/name_m] & [name_m]Boaz[/name_m]. Kind of cool, kind of too similar. It’s one of the reasons I’m on the fence about it. But I do think it’s a good name in & of itself…as far as all the ways to say it, I have found so far that’s one that ppl
[name_f][/name_f]Tend to get right away. Our other children seem to have a harder time on their names! Ha.

[name_f][/name_f]

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Congrats on baby #7[name_f][/name_f]! [name_f][/name_f] Your kiddos have the most amazing names, I always love seeing them.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Jabez[/name_m] Kephas is fascinating, I love the idea of using Kephas! [name_f][/name_f] [name_m]Jabez[/name_m] is interesting, the prayer of [name_m]Jabez[/name_m] is an interesting connection, although the meaning of [name_m]Jabez[/name_m] never really impressed me personally. [name_f][/name_f] [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m] I find utterly fascinating though and [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m] Kephas is so cute! [name_f][/name_f] I also love [name_m]Kairos[/name_m], [name_m]Theophilus[/name_m], and [name_m]Gideon[/name_m]. [name_f][/name_f] Kepha [name_m]Theophilus[/name_m] is also cool. [name_f][/name_f] How do you feel about [name_m]Malachi[/name_m]? [name_f][/name_f] He feels so you, somehow, although doesn’t have the “oh” sound. [name_f][/name_f] A few other ideas:

[name_f][/name_f]

Jonah/Jonas
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Joash[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Josias[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Hosea[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f]Noam/Noach (maybe too similar to [name_f]Noemi[/name_f], though?)
[name_f][/name_f]Goshen
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Cornelius[/name_m]

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Jael[/name_f] Agape is fascinating; I can’t say that I would be interested in [name_f]Jael[/name_f] myself, the story just seems so violent lol, but I love the idea of Agape.

[name_f][/name_f]

Here’s a few other ideas:

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Liel[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Liora[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Olivet[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Hadassah[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Acacia[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Odelia[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]Susanna/Shoshana

[name_f][/name_f]

For middles meaning “love”, I think [name_f]Philou[/name_f] is also lovely, and means “love”, coming from “philos”. [name_f][/name_f] Philos might be a fun middle for a boy, too!

[name_f][/name_f]

Good luck!

[name_f][/name_f]

Thank you for your suggestion! [name_f]Brielle[/name_f] is definitely beautiful! :star_struck:
