    Honestly, association. I’m most drawn to family names, and least drawn to names that belong to people I know and dislike (or sound like they could.)

    It changes day-to-day, honestly, but [name_m]Ivan[/name_m] is an underused classic.

    [name_f]Margie[/name_f]. I think I prefer [name_f]Marjorie[/name_f] to [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], but my grandmother was named just [name_f]Margie[/name_f] and I love the name.

    Once again, [name_f]Margie[/name_f], for my lovely grandmother.

    [name_f]Dorothea[/name_f] (gift of God) and [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] (lovely rose) are both beautiful.

    [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f]- both because of the lovely song “Me and Magdalena” and because of associations to [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Magdalene[/name_f]. Doves cutting through cloudy skies, a springtime sunrise where the dew bites your skin, bare feet on a cool stone path.

    [name_f]Hanne[/name_f]. Heard it on a podcast and was immediately in love.

    Hmmm… I’m going to say [name_m]Townes[/name_m] (for musician [name_m]Townes[/name_m] van Zandt) because it’s outside of my usual style and I’ll probably hate it soon.

    [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] and [name_f]Byrdie[/name_f]. Especially [name_f]Byrdie[/name_f]- hate names with unnecessary vowel changes, but it’s so cute! [name_f]My[/name_f] daughter in Stardew [name_f]Valley[/name_f] is called [name_f]Birdie[/name_f], and I’d use it on a [name_f]Bridget[/name_f], but it’s just not normally my style.

    [name_f]Rona[/name_f]. I have had 2 important people in my life named [name_m]Ron[/name_m] (one [name_m]Ronald[/name_m], one just Ron,) and it’s an established Jewish name, but, y’know… co-rona.

  13. if you’re comfortable sharing, what’s the coolest name on your family tree?
    [name_m]Ransom[/name_m] for sure! I love it. Also some unique ones, like Boazadah.

    I love Russian names, especially from Dostoevsky. Avdotya comes to mind immediately.

    Recently I’ve been into [name_m]Avon[/name_m] and [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] nn [name_f]Beadie[/name_f], both characters from The Wire.

    — Nothing except how much I love it. Family connections/honor names are just a bonus! But also pop-culture associations make a name 3000x better.

    — Theodore, and it has been since forever.

    — Elizabeth, with Polly in very close second.

    — Josephine, since it honors so many people in my family. Second is Elizabeth, just because I love it so much.

    — I don’t much pay attention to meaning, but Polly or any of my other Marian names mean “beloved” (among other possible and maybe more plausible meanings) and I think that’s just so sweet and adorable!!

    — Probably my Bridie Susannah. It gives me imagery of a pine tree in the middle of a forest covered in snow.

    — Single name, Elizabeth. It’s been on my list since before I had any style. Combo, Jane Maria (Muh-rye-uh), since a little before I joined NB in November.

    — Probably Britney.

    — Honey. I adore it but it’s a little too diminutive.

    — Also very many. But currently I’m loving Mary, Edith, and Sybil (as individual names and as a sibset) from Downton Abbey.

    — I had a lot of Barbies. Some standouts are Denver and Christian (both girls)

It’s ironic because my top combos are [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] [name_f]Maritza[/name_f] (both honors) and [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

  6. I probably get the strongest imagery from [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] [name_f]Juna[/name_f]. I picture a lot of subtle greens, oranges and meadows. I see a bright little girl who is shy to outsiders but when she’s at home she can be pretty wild.

  1. I don’t honestly know if I can put it into words… when I like a name, I just know. Something about it intrigues me, and I can’t get it out of my head for days. That being said… I guess I like sound. And meanings are a bonus, but if the meaning isn’t that great it doesn’t detract from the name.
  2. Ahhh sooo hard… I think I’d have to go with [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]. Runners-up would be [name_m]Cassian[/name_m], [name_m]Wilbur[/name_m], [name_m]Ishmael[/name_m], and [name_m]Marius[/name_m].
  3. Right now it’s [name_f]Aristeia[/name_f] and probably will remain so for awhile
  4. Again, [name_f]Aristeia[/name_f]. It’s a Greek term for a hero’s finest hour in an epic poem. I love the idea of naming my baby that to signify my own greatest hour, because I’ve always dreamed of having a daughter and becoming a mom :heart:

Aside from the fact that I have to like it, that it’s not popular now, or was super popular in the past and now associated with a specific time

[name_u]Robin[/name_u], but it’s my partners name so we’ll be using it as a middle rather than a first

I don’t have a single name I like more than the others on my list, but the most enduring name on my list is [name_f]Esme[/name_f] - I’ve like it since I met a girl called [name_f]Esme[/name_f] about 20 years ago! Somebody once told me they had a dream I had a daughter called [name_f]Esme[/name_f] too, so maybe it’s meant to be!

which name on your list is the most meaningful to you?
[name_u]June[/name_u] - it was my grandmother’s middle name, and it’s my partner’s grandmother’s middle name that she chose to use as a first name. I also have lots of family members born in [name_u]June[/name_u] and 6 is my favourite number (I was born on the 6th).

[name_u]Haven[/name_u] - a safe or peaceful place, a sanctuary

  • [name_m]Rainer[/name_m]. Recently I’ve been loving a low of boys names though. [name_m]Adriel[/name_m], [name_m]Joshua[/name_m], [name_u]Ezra[/name_u], the list can go on.
  1. what’s your absolute favourite girls’ name?
  • I think it has to be [name_f]Luna[/name_f] to be honest. I’ve been in love with this gorgeous name for a while now. I also have [name_f]Lucine[/name_f].

  • [name_f]Isadora[/name_f], [name_u]Dominique[/name_u], and [name_f]Luna[/name_f]. [name_f]Isadora[/name_f] is meaningful to me because of the meaning, “gift of Isis”. I love my name no matter what anybody says about it, and if I ever do have a daughter, I think that would be a cute connection. [name_u]Dominique[/name_u] is special to me because of my Father, [name_u]Dominique[/name_u]. He is the most special man in my life and I couldn’t be more grateful to have him. [name_f]Luna[/name_f] is special to me because of the meaning, “moon”. That’s a conversation for another day, though.

this is kind of tricky to answer! i think the sound and look of the name matters a lot to me and is what i look for first, but if the name doesn’t have a strong meaning (or at least one that i can kinda get behind) it will never be a favorite.
