Having a hard time trying to find a middle name for [name_f]Coraline[/name_f]. (Last name ends with “a”, so non-rhyming girl names are not that common.) On a whim the other night, I suggested Katydid to my husband and it’s actually starting to grow on me. I’ve heard of kids named [name_f]Cricket[/name_f] but is Katydid too bizarre?
I’m also a little afraid of becoming one of those whose names get increasingly weird as they go along. Big sister’s name is [name_f]Gillian[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f].
Thoughts on Katydid? My other main contender is [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] but I’m not sure I want to burden her with that many children’s lit characters.
[name_f]Cricket[/name_f], as a nickname or term of endearment, is very [name_m]Little[/name_m] Women to me, adorable.
Katydid is one I personally just don’t get.
Honestly I thought you forgot a space so I’m going to vote no.
Also going to say that this is one I’m not sure I get. Looks a little too much like “[name_f]Katy[/name_f] did”, as in, [name_f]Katy[/name_f] did this or that…
My thoughts exactly.
I love it!
It’s cute, it’s interesting, and it’s only in the middle slot, after all, so if she goes through phases as a teen in which she doesn’t like it, she doesn’t have to use it.
My little sister’s name is [name_f]Katy[/name_f], and has been called Katydid as a nickname. We all think it’s adorable and has character
I’m not a fan of Kaydid, but I can see why you like it as a middle to [name_f]Coraline[/name_f]. [name_f]Coraline[/name_f] is very airy and heavy on vowels while Katydid seems to make it sound more grounded with its consonants. Let me see if I can find something that sounds similar in rhythm with [name_f]Coraline[/name_f]…
[name_f]Coraline[/name_f] [name_f]Ayelet[/name_f]
[name_f]Coraline[/name_f] [name_f]Winifred[/name_f]
[name_f]Coraline[/name_f] [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]
[name_f]Coraline[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f]
[name_f]Coraline[/name_f] [name_u]Winter[/name_u]
[name_f]Coraline[/name_f] [name_f]Ireland[/name_f]
[name_f]Coraline[/name_f] [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f]
[name_f]Coraline[/name_f] [name_f]Cynthia[/name_f]
[name_f]Coraline[/name_f] [name_u]Vivian[/name_u]
[name_f]Coraline[/name_f] Rosebud
[name_f]Coraline[/name_f] [name_f]Emerald[/name_f]
[name_f]Coraline[/name_f] [name_u]Meredith[/name_u]
[name_f]Coraline[/name_f] [name_f]Milicent[/name_f]
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you like any of these as much as [name_f]Coraline[/name_f] Kaydid? Good luck naming your daughter
Too much potential for teasing in that [name_f]Katy[/name_f] did…
In addition to the fact that it doesn’t sound good with [name_f]Coraline[/name_f], I think Katydid is just unattractive in any part of a name, maybe with the exception of a nickname. The difference between Katydid and [name_f]Cricket[/name_f] is that crickets have a sort of cute connotation - lucky crickets, for example. Katydids are just bugs, and not even particularly cute ones. That’s why I don’t think it’s good idea.
I can sort of see the appeal. With [name_f]Katie[/name_f] as an actual name/nn, it sounds rather namey, and with other insect names, I could see someone saying, why not? But I still don’t get the idea of using an insect name as a given name, for the most part, and don’t get [name_f]Cricket[/name_f], either. And a katydid is a rather… odd insect to name one’s child after, I would think? I actually think [name_f]Coraline[/name_f] Katydid looks and sounds pretty cute, but if you’re into insect names I’d do [name_f]Coraline[/name_f] Firefly, [name_f]Coraline[/name_f] [name_f]Butterfly[/name_f] (or even [name_f]Coraline[/name_f] [name_f]Papillon[/name_f], the [name_m]French[/name_m] word for “butterfly”), or [name_f]Coraline[/name_f] Ladybug before Katydid. I even like [name_f]Coraline[/name_f] [name_f]Borboleta[/name_f] (Portuguese word for butterfly), but if you’re not wanting to rhyme with your surname I can see why it wouldn’t be an option for you.
[name_f]Coraline[/name_f] [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] is a lot of children’s literary names, but there was another [name_u]Berry[/name_u] who had an [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] [name_f]Madeline[/name_f], which is equally children’s lit. I don’t think most people would think of that when they meet your daughter, honestly, and how many will know her mn after she’s about a year or so? My guess is not too many, and I doubt most of them would put it together, unless you emphasize the ties to children’s lit with [name_f]Coraline[/name_f] and [name_u]Eloise[/name_u].
If you’re looking for non-insect names, what about:
[name_f]Coraline[/name_f] [name_f]Luna[/name_f]
[name_f]Coraline[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Coraline[/name_f] [name_f]Elodie[/name_f]
[name_f]Coraline[/name_f] [name_f]Poppy[/name_f]
[name_f]Coraline[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f]
[name_f]Coraline[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f]
[name_f]Coraline[/name_f] [name_f]Frances[/name_f]
[name_f]Coraline[/name_f] [name_f]Margo[/name_f]
[name_f]Coraline[/name_f] [name_f]Felicity[/name_f]
[name_f]Coraline[/name_f] [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]
[name_f]Coraline[/name_f] [name_f]Emerald[/name_f]
[name_f]Coraline[/name_f] [name_f]Zoe[/name_f]
[name_f]Coraline[/name_f] [name_f]Chloe[/name_f] (actually like the alliteration here–I think [name_f]Coraline[/name_f] [name_f]Chloe[/name_f]'s pretty cute!)
Good luck!
[name_u]Love[/name_u] it, fabulous nature word. What’s a middle name for if not to be fun?
Same for me. Sorry.
My name is [name_f]Katie[/name_f], and I’ve often been nicknamed and referred to as “Katydid”. I’ve always hated it. Maybe your daughter would have the personality to pull it off and run with it, but I feel like that’s putting an unnecessary burden on a child.
I think it’s cute, very weird but usable. Use it if you like it!
Definitely not a fan.
As a middle I think it works, though I do prefer [name_f]Cricket[/name_f] or Ladybird as far as insect names go.
I’m not so sure I’m sold…However [name_f]Cricket[/name_f] is cute, fun and endearing, and could be a nickname, and even though it might be a stretch, it does sound like it might have been derived from [name_f]Coraline[/name_f] as an affectionate nickname.
Go with [name_u]Eloise[/name_u]
Personally I’m not a fan at all of Katydid, and for me it ruins the otherwise lovely choice of [name_f]Coraline[/name_f]. I’m not so keen on [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] either. It’s a lovely name, but it doesn’t quite match with [name_f]Coraline[/name_f] for me. When I consider your elder daughter’s name, I wonder if a more sturdy, old-fashioned middle-name would be better for your [name_f]Coraline[/name_f]? ‘[name_f]Coraline[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]’ or ‘[name_f]Coraline[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]’ sounds more like a sister for ‘[name_f]Gillian[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]’ than ‘[name_f]Coraline[/name_f] [name_u]Eloise[/name_u]’ to me.
Otherwise though, I love the idea of [name_f]Cricket[/name_f] as a nickname-it’s very sweet, endearing and individual.
Okay can someone help me out with the pronunciation of Katydid? I tried googling the name but all that came up were crickets?
