Lucy, a dog name?

So I love the name [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]. And I think it would go well with my [name_f]Gemma[/name_f] and [name_m]George[/name_m]. Looking for a cute, simple name that also feels classically British. My mom said [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] sounds like a dog’s name. Now that she mentions it I kinda feel like she’s right, even though I’ve never met a dog named [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]. What are your thoughts?

I think it’s nice and I think it works well with both humans and pets. However, it is a little nickname-y. And I agree it fits with the siblings names

Someone may name their dog [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], but that shouldn’t deter you from using it for your child.

Hahaha, what?! Sorry but that’s so silly. It’s a lovely name. [name_f]Do[/name_f] pets have it? Yea. But I’ve also met a dog named [name_m]Jason[/name_m]. Any name can be a pet name. The only names I completely associate with a dog and never a human would be Fido, Sparky, and Rover. Not even [name_u]Rex[/name_u] is just a dog’s name. I know a couple humans named [name_u]Rex[/name_u]. I know a few girls named [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] (a top dog name). Goodness gracious…[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]?? Very very human.

Here’s the thing anything can be a dog name for example my aunt & uncle used to have a dog named [name_f]Gemma[/name_f]. However if you are worried people may think of it only as a dog name what about [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] nn “[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]”

My husband likes [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], but i had a dog called [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] for 16 years and I just couldn’t use it.

However, if someone else names their child [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], it feels perfectly fine to me because they wouldn’t have the same associations that I do.

My childhood best friend is [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] so definitely human to me although I have also met a black lab with same name.

I’ve definitely met more people called [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] (4) than I have met dogs called [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] (0!) so to me it’s not a dog name.

I know/have known 3 Lucys, and they’re all human. I think it might be a different matter if you knew a dog [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] who was holding you back (I really struggle to imagine [name_f]Flora[/name_f] for a person because I knew a doggy [name_f]Flora[/name_f]), but since you don’t I think it’s fine.

I have never met a dog [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], and honestly, pet names can be anything so I don’t think you have a problem unless you were considering naming your child “Spot” or “Fido.”

I know a girl named [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] who goes by [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and she’s adorable

My stepdaughter, who will be 30 this year, is [name_f]Lucille[/name_f], but has always gone by [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]…& she has commented that she’s a bit sad that she hears [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] as the name of so many dogs.

W/[name_f]Gemma[/name_f] & [name_m]George[/name_m] I really like the previous suggestion of [name_f]Lucia[/name_f], w/no nickname. [name_f]Luisa[/name_f] (Loo-EE-sah) seems to fit as well, at least to my eye/ear.

My dogs over the years have been [name_u]Kelly[/name_u], [name_m]Ezra[/name_m], [name_f]Maisie[/name_f], and [name_m]Beckham[/name_m]… all very people names! Use what you love. [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] is great!

I personally draw the line at the point where the baby will be in company of a pet with the same name frequently… for example I wouldn’t name my daughter [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] if my brother had a dog called [name_f]Daisy[/name_f], as we would be likely to see my brother and therefore the pet quite often… the same reason I wouldn’t call a son [name_m]Archie[/name_m]- because [name_m]Archie[/name_m], to me, will always be my cat. This comes from a family situation though, something I’ve seen before and would rather avoid! But no, if you don’t know any dogs called [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] that you’re going to see once a week, I wouldn’t worry about naming a daughter [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]. I have cousins and friends named [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and it’s a perfectly lovely name. Final point, giving pets “human” names is a trend- and quite a modern trend at that. [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] was a human name first, so it shouldn’t be a problem.

I know more human Lucys than dog Lucys.

So, I worked for 5 years in an animal shelter. The animals there had every name you could imagine. Human names like [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and silly names like Turkey. I knew a dog named [name_f]Nova[/name_f] before I named my daughter [name_f]Nova[/name_f]. My grandmothers cat is named [name_f]Cleo[/name_f] and yet we are happily using it for our next baby girl due in [name_u]January[/name_u]. I know not everyone is okay with that, but I’ve known SO many animals with so many names that it doesn’t really make an impact on my naming choices. [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] is a totally human name.

My oldests name is [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] and we always call her [name_f]Lucy[/name_f].

There’s a difference between “dog names” and “names that some dogs have”. I put [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] in the latter category, where Fido, [name_m]Spike[/name_m], or [name_f]Bitsy[/name_f] would be in the former, if you catch my drift. [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] is a lovely name, and I think most people would agree.

I know one dog and one person named [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]. I also know dogs named [name_m]David[/name_m] and [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]. As others have said, it was a human name first, and it’s still a human name to me even if it’s used on dogs. I think it goes great with [name_f]Gemma[/name_f] and [name_m]George[/name_m] and makes me think of The [name_m]Lion[/name_m], the Witch, and the Wardrobe, very classic British.

I know a little girl named [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]. It’s a very sweet name.
