Annaveive
[name_f]Viera[/name_f]
Theoden
[name_f]Arwen[/name_f]
[name_f]Evanna[/name_f]
[name_f]Sansa[/name_f]
Viria (after the artist)
I love the name Cambriel! I read it in a book, so I take no credit for the name. I’ve seriously considered using it for a future son though. It doesn’t sound like a made up name at all imo. I also really like Tauriel, it’s such a pretty name!
@steampunkleo I love the artist Viria too!
Loreli instead of [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f]
I like:
Olibet / Olibette (nn [name_f]Betty[/name_f], [name_u]Ollie[/name_u] or [name_f]Libby[/name_f])
Annevieve
Mimley
Aphelise
Astriel
Lulin
Nefiri
Dreith
Casca
Chesca
Novalee from Where the Heart is. This is one of the only books I’ve ever read and liked and Novalee is just beautiful. I would like the spelling [name_f]Novalie[/name_f] better.
Arrailia (I liked the name [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] but didn’t love the pronunciation, so I tweaked it to come up with this)
Arriah (my personal favorite, which I actually plan on using one day… it’s [name_f]Mariah[/name_f] without the M)
Arriere (it means “to the back” in [name_m]French[/name_m], which is awful, but I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] the way it sounds)
Aulalia (yes, I like A names, haha)
Caelia
I also like the name Pier for a boy, which is obviously a real word but isn’t a name.
I like Jodelle, Brietta, Sarora and Evolet
Half the female names in A Song of Ice and [name_m]Fire[/name_m]. [name_m]Martin[/name_m] has so many beautiful inventions!! Also:
Melian, Luthien, Lalaith (Tolkien)
Silvara, Laurana, Alhana, Kitiara (Dragonlance)
Kerrec - the hero from one of my favorite lesser-known fantasy trilogies. Always loved the way it looks and sounds.
Miakoda - many baby name sites have it listed as “[name_m]Power[/name_m] of the [name_f]Moon[/name_f]” in an unspecified Native American language. It doesn’t actually mean anything as far as I have been able to discover, let alone anything in a Native American language. But I still really like it!
[name_f]Aiyana[/name_f] - doesn’t mean “[name_f]Eternal[/name_f] bloom,” but I wish it did. It’s really pretty.
[name_f]Kimana[/name_f] - does not mean anything in [name_f]Shoshone[/name_f], but once again I wish it did.
@blaise11 – I don’t think Caelia is made-up. This page claims it’s Ancient [name_m]Roman[/name_m]. We briefly considered this for our list some months ago; it’s a lovely name.
@kimigrace – [name_f]Aiyana[/name_f] is gorgeous! [name_u]Love[/name_u] so many names from your signature, too!
“Made-up” names I like include [name_f]Elanor[/name_f] (not [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]) and [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] from LOTR; Rhaego (my OH loves this one) and [name_f]Daenerys[/name_f] (yup, looks like I’ve converted) from GoT; Eilonwy and [name_f]Taran[/name_f] from The Chronicles of Prydain; Irelia, Akali, Anivia, Shyvana, and quite a few others from LOL. I am surely forgetting many here, but those are the ones that come to mind right now.
I don’t like the snobbishness over ‘made-up’ names, a lot of perfectly good names were made up once - [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] was a typo in a [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m] play (originally [name_f]Innogen[/name_f]) and [name_f]Araminta[/name_f] was a ‘smoosh’ of [name_f]Arabella[/name_f] and [name_f]Aminta[/name_f] way before [name_f]Renesmee[/name_f] but both are considered perfectly good names now.
My favourite made-up name is [name_f]Cora[/name_f], which [name_u]James[/name_u] Fennimore [name_m]Cooper[/name_m] invented for The Last of the Mohicans, and now it’s been used for a duchess in Downton [name_u]Abbey[/name_u] (apparently, I don’t watch it).
@ziggywiggy First of all, thank you! I love so many names that others would think of as strictly GP but I would use in a heartbeat! Saela is pronounced say-lah, like the word [name_f]Selah[/name_f] in the Psalms or the [name_m]Christian[/name_m] band. Funny thing is, my husband and I are both atheists, so we don’t look to that meaning. We started with the name [name_f]Sela[/name_f] from one of his favorite shows and make it ourselves. We always joke that people in [name_m]Chick[/name_m] Fil A that think we’re saying [name_f]Selah[/name_f] are none the wiser.
Eothain
Theoden
[name_f]Eowyn[/name_f]
Tommen
[name_f]Jolene[/name_f]
[name_m]Anakin[/name_m]
[name_f]Vanna[/name_f]
Daphodil, I think you’re safe with [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] - I believe it actually was an established Welsh name before Tolkien, but almost everyone thinks of [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] Undomiel now, obviously, so people assume it was an invention. I also have a soft spot for [name_m]Jackson[/name_m]'s recent invention of Tauriel; so gorgeous. It’s not that far away from [name_u]Ariel[/name_u], which no one really blinks at anymore.
I’ve fallen head over heels in love with Ellaria recently, with [name_u]Elia[/name_u] right behind it. And obviously I share your love of [name_f]Daenerys[/name_f]. Oh, thank you for liking my signature!! You’re actually the very first person to say so, haha! I often get the feeling that people are trying to hold back snide remarks.
I am in complete agreement! Why the elitism? Why does the fact that a name springs from literature make it less-than? And why are some “made up” names fine and some not? [name_m]Even[/name_m] some of the vitriol around [name_f]Katniss[/name_f] really surprises and discourages me. What’s so wrong with [name_f]Katniss[/name_f]? It’s a perfectly acceptable (and in my opinion lovely) botanical name that nobody would have even considered before [name_u]Collins[/name_u].
I really like [name_f]Coraline[/name_f]!
I like the name Zoevie but I think I made it up! Still unsure on the pronunciation. It’s a combination of [name_f]Zoe[/name_f] and [name_f]Eve[/name_f].
My favorites include:
Tauriel- fake Lotr name but gorgeous sound
Annevieve- originally found in an old cemetary
Saranda- American pioneer name
Clarimonde- from an old story
Saro- Pretty Saro is an old folk song, pronounced like Sara but with an o
Izalie- probably some smoosh between Isabelle and French Azelie
Evolet- from the movie 10,000 bc but could also be related to medieval name Evelot
Averin- Scottish term for Cloudberries but would make a pretty name
Findabhair- (Finn-a-veer)supposedly an ancient Irish name related to Gwendolen but I can’t find any reliable source to back this up
Vivendel- Nordic word for Honeysuckle
Amerie- modern made up name, possibly related to Amaury
Lyerly- saw this on tv somewhere. Don’t know the origin but looks like it’s related to the Greek word Lyre
Veradis- related to Vera, but can’t find an explanation for the change
Jasalyn- Prn [name_u]Jaz[/name_u]-sah-lyn. Mash up of [name_f]Jasmine[/name_f] and [name_f]Jocelyn[/name_f]. Meaning could be flowery lake. I love this name but I’m not sure how well it would age.
[name_f]Camber[/name_f]- I’m not a fan of [name_f]Amber[/name_f] but I like [name_f]Camber[/name_f].
Evolet- [name_u]Love[/name_u] this name. Never heard of the name til my cousin named her daughter [name_f]Faith[/name_f] Evolet.
[name_f]Mariella[/name_f]
Amabeth
Isabeth
[name_f]Coralena[/name_f]
Corabeth
Rosaphine/ Rosaphina
Elizadora
Clova
Always thought [name_f]Elizabella[/name_f] was pretty. Evolet is pretty too.
[name_f]Cora[/name_f], [name_f]Coraline[/name_f]
[name_f]Djuna[/name_f], [name_m]Davian[/name_m], [name_m]Dorian[/name_m]
[name_f]Fiona[/name_f]
[name_f]Imogen[/name_f]
Galadriel, Tinuviel, Lorien, Aragorn, [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f], Theoden, Tauriel
[name_m]Percival[/name_m]
[name_m]Aramis[/name_m]
[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Desdemona[/name_f] - this is probably my guiltiest GP name; I’ve tried to stop loving it and I just can’t.
[name_f]Daenerys[/name_f] & [name_f]Sansa[/name_f] - I’ve never watched/read GoT/ASoIaF, and what little I know about the series could maybe fill half a page if I’m lucky, but these two names stand out as gorgeous to me. I wish, especially, I had the courage to use [name_f]Daenerys[/name_f] for a character of my own… It’s such a lovely name. [name_f]Sansa[/name_f], at least, seems to have some basis outside of the series, so I don’t feel as guilty for trying to use it.
Elsinor has always seemed like it should be a name to me.
