šŸ« madison plays name guru to the berries

Hi!!!

Iā€™ve had some predictions thus far where people have described all these quirky interests and then say ā€œbut my dream is a suburban cul-de-sacā€ (no hate to my suburban besties). If youā€™re anti-soccer mom lifestyle then we can dial the predictions up a notch. I will say in advance that I worry a bit that I was leaning into the French/Italian chic vibe too much but Iā€™m going to stand by it.

The vibe is international chic! These kids live part time in a Parisian apartment where they walk to get fresh croissants after ballet, then they retreat to their sprawling place in the Italian countryside to eat fresh fruit and lounge in the sun. For references, Iā€™m thinking [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] [name_m]Borromeo[/name_m], [name_f]Tatiana[/name_f] [name_m]Santo[/name_m] [name_m]Domingo[/name_m] & Call Me By Your Name.

Iā€™m sure youā€™ll relate to my struggle with boy names - I could have given you 20 more girls but I was fighting with those boys.

Also including a disclaimer that I am not including any accent marks for my predictions. Iā€™ll count on you to include them or know where they go:)

Anyway, back to the names :tangerine:

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] hi hi!

I could definitely see you picking a vintage name, likely with a literary reference in there somewhere. I also think (or maybe hope) that you might include some nature influence. I think the first name will generally be more traditional but the middle name could be a flower name or a bolder literary name.

I have this imagery in my head of a secluded little cottage with wisteria climbing over the sides.

[name_m]Hi[/name_m]! I made it!

Your first line was that you march to the beat of your own drum. I first wrote ā€œindividuality, eccentricity (?)ā€ By the time I got to the end, I had to cross out that question mark because youā€™re so you. (BTW love the music taste - itā€™s big and loud and fun!) The challenge with that, is that I definitely see you picking names you love and think are cool rather than adhering to a strick style or cohesion factor. This is especially hard because I get such strong vibes from [name_m]Cormac[/name_m] [name_m]Wilder[/name_m]!

When I read the description of your job, I definitely saw the ā€œpuzzle solverā€ aspect - and then you listed out some strategy games, crosswords, and logic puzzles to really solidify it. I could see you looking for subtle or hidden meanings within names. How do they connect when they donā€™t quite seem to connect? This also furthers the idea that the sibset/names might not seem immediately cohesive, but youll likely see the ways that they connect when others may not.

[name_m]Cormac[/name_m] gives me such orange, red, brown - fall color - vibes. For some reason it reminds me of foxes and the woods, which is further accentuated by [name_m]Wilder[/name_m]. It makes me think of [name_m]Rafferty[/name_m], [name_m]Cedric[/name_m], and [name_m]Ronan[/name_m]. Some of the names that I really see with [name_m]Cormac[/name_m] are actually concerningly similar. [name_m]Cormac[/name_m] and [name_m]Cedric[/name_m] are probably too similar sounding, but even more so I think the match is too on the nose for you. So one thing I decided to lean into (probably leaned too hard into it, not going to lie) is the general category of Hidden [name_m]Nature[/name_m] Names. [name_m]Wilder[/name_m] is a not so secret nature name so I included those too. But with your puzzle history and nature interests, I could see you going for a name that has a connection to the environment even if itā€™s not super obvious.

Let me get to the list

Individual name predictions:
[name_m]Rafferty[/name_m], [name_m]Ronan[/name_m], [name_m]Callum[/name_m], [name_m]Dacre[/name_m], [name_m]Douglas[/name_m] (Gus), [name_m]Oscar[/name_m], [name_m]Percy[/name_m], [name_m]Vincent[/name_m], [name_m]Heath[/name_m], [name_m]Hollis[/name_m] (for a boy or girl), [name_f]Oona[/name_f], [name_f]Marlow[/name_f] (boy or girl, also counting Marlowe/Marlo), [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], [name_f]Loretta[/name_f] (Letty), [name_f]Winifred[/name_f], [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] (Poppy, [name_f]Nell[/name_f], Penny)

[name_m]Hi[/name_m], hello!!

You donā€™t want an overused name, but I think you would want an imminently familiar name. People may not have met a baby with this name, or they may only know one, but theyā€™ve heard the name before. [name_m]Marshall[/name_m] fits this to me. Iā€™ve heard the name but itā€™s not one I encounter much.

Iā€™m envisioning a slightly rugged name. Vibes are curling up to watch a movie, jumping into the lake, skipping rocks, stretching out in the sun, and tending to pollinator gardens. I think that you would want a cozy, soft name. No harsh sounds (c/k), lots of soft rolling syllables (oo/la).

For middle names, Iā€™m a bit stumped. If [name_m]Jacob[/name_m] is a very direct family nameā€¦ would you pick grandpaā€™s middle name? Would you pick your middle name (oh please do I think this would be sweet and I donā€™t even know your middle name)? Would you feel like youā€™ve fulfilled the family name obligation and now you can pick whatever you want?

For girls, I might pick a more tailored name - I donā€™t see you picking something super frilly. Maybe the middle name will be a star/sun/moon reference (really for either a boy or a girl but there are a lot of fun ones for girls).

Thank you so much!! You explained my name tastes perfectly!!! Also a lot of the names you suggested are on my list and I adore the ones that arenā€™t! We are pregnant with baby #2 and have already decided on names and one of the boys names you guessed is a nickname for the name we chose  which I havenā€™t previously posted about. You have talent!! :medal_sports:

Youā€™re definitely onto something with the nature names and generally not trying to stick to a certain taste and going with what I like. [name_f]My[/name_f] longer list has names from various cultures and spans top 10 names to outside the top 1000 names :sparkles: I grew up in the woods and still live in an area with beautiful nature, and love that. Hopefully my kiddo does too, because he will be coming on walks with me!

Suggestion wise you picked some great names, some were on the long list, but others arenā€™t and I dig them!

also I will return to your earlier comment, Iā€™m doing predictions chronologically through this thread so that I donā€™t miss anybody but I definitely have plans to get to everyone as they post. Didnā€™t want you to think that I forgot :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

I am a writer, a feminist, a [name_m]Christian[/name_m], a poet, a bibliophile, and a cinephile. Among my favorites things in life are: a good book, any old Hollywood Film ā€“ especially those of [name_f]Jean[/name_f] [name_f]Harlow[/name_f] and [name_f]Marlene[/name_f] [name_m]Dietrich[/name_m], writing a beautiful line, spending time with my loved ones, going to church, and caring for my beloved pets, a goldendoodle called [name_f]Lila[/name_f] [name_f]June[/name_f] and a tortoise called [name_f]Indie[/name_f].

A perfect morning for me is spent watching anything with [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] Paulson, rereading some of my favorite childhood books, and snuggling under a warm blanket with my dog and some sort of breakfast that is really dessert.

Iā€™m passionate about environmentalism, feminism, reproductive rights, and LGBQTQIAP+ rights. Some of my favorite subjects to learn about are whales, cults (Iā€™m not weird, I promise), names, feminist film history, [name_m]Early[/name_m] American history, and reptiles. Among my favorite musical artists are [name_f]Patti[/name_f] [name_m]Smith[/name_m], The Lumineers, and [name_f]Taylor[/name_f] [name_m]Swift[/name_m]. Among my favorite authors are [name_f]Toni[/name_f] [name_m]Morrison[/name_m], [name_f]Marilynne[/name_f] [name_m]Robinson[/name_m], [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_m]Austen[/name_m], and [name_f]Emma[/name_f] Cline.

I could spend all day talking about the movie [name_f]Martha[/name_f] [name_f]Marcy[/name_f] [name_f]May[/name_f] [name_f]Marlene[/name_f] and I love snow and [name_f]Christmas[/name_f], but not winter. I have two tattoos: a [name_m]Van[/name_m] Gogh iris and the illustration of the wardrobe from The Chronicles of [name_f]Narnia[/name_f]. For my next piece, I hope to get a blue whale.

And thatā€™s about it!

[name_m]Hi[/name_m]! I want to start by saying that I may have gone overboard.

I was getting strong imagery, vibes, and references - but there are so many directions to take them in! Some of it was quite contradictory because I wanted to lean into this gothic aesthetic but I didnā€™t want the names to be too dark. I even wrote ā€œWuthering Heights if they were happy!ā€ Iā€™m thinking of waterlilies, moors, flower crowns, willow trees, candlelight, stars shining in the night sky, dewy grass, crisp air.

I noted that your interests in dance as expression may translate to names as expression. Putting the meaning, references, and care that make you who you are into the name you choose. But I also tend to conflate extroversion with approachable, friendly vibes (rather than dark, myserious vibes), so I tried to work with that juxtaposition. Iā€™m including a range of predictions - weā€™ll see how I did.

omg, I was waiting just for this post!! So excited because you pretty much nailed it!

This description is too perfect! Iā€™m grinning from ear to ear!

Out of your combos I really love:
[name_f]Isadora[/name_f] [name_f]Willow[/name_f]: [name_f]Love[/name_f] the [name_f]Isadora[/name_f] [name_m]Duncan[/name_m] reference here, and over all this combo feels so floaty and elegant!
[name_f]Agatha[/name_f] [name_m]Wilde[/name_m]: [name_m]Super[/name_m] clunky and I love the slightly gothic, literary feel! This sounds like a character from a [name_f]Bronte[/name_f] novel for sure!
[name_f]Viola[/name_f] [name_f]Darling[/name_f]: [name_f]Darling[/name_f] is so, so sweet. I definitely will consider her in this set!
[name_f]Marianne[/name_f] [name_m]Sorrel[/name_m]: [name_m]Sorrel[/name_m] on a girl is so pretty! I love [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] too, and this feels so romantic and naturey, love it!
[name_m]Edgar[/name_m] [name_f]Blythe[/name_f]: :face_holding_back_tears: I canā€™t with this one! Heā€™s just precious!!
[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] [name_f]Blanche[/name_f]: Sheā€™s so soft and I love the pale pastel tones Iā€™m getting- perfect for the watercolour, flowery vibe I was going for!
[name_m]Earnest[/name_m], [name_m]Catesby[/name_m], [name_m]Valentine[/name_m], [name_m]March[/name_m], [name_f]Lark[/name_f], and [name_m]Dorian[/name_m] are amazing choices too!

Out of the other names mentioned on your notes, [name_f]Helena[/name_f] and [name_m]Benedict[/name_m] are catching my eye as pretty perfect for this set! They have the classic/romantic but soft feel I was looking for! I also love [name_f]Mamie[/name_f] and [name_f]Scout[/name_f] but they have different vibes to me.

Thank you so, so much!! I love all your ideas (and your handwritten notes!) and probably will be back for another one in the future!

Hi!! I really wanted to find a beach, boho name for you. A sweet name for a bubbly kid. Someone who is welcoming, approachable, quick to help, and always making you laugh. The name has to be fun! Half as fun as you are, if not more.

I donā€™t see you picking a clunky name or a stern name (these categories range from [name_f]Hildegard[/name_f] to Joseph). You would definitely go for a happy name.

The reference to Switzerland did throw me a bit - Germanic mountain names feel different from sunny beach names. But Iā€™m taking that to mean there might be a quaint European or natural influence.

I love this thread and thought it might be fun to describe both myself and my wife and have you predict what weā€™d name another child together? Obviously feel free to ignore if you donā€™t feel inspired / are overwhelmed with requests!

Summary

Iā€™m Finnish and my wife is American (from the South). We met at an international LGBTQ+ studentsā€™ meet up in [name_f]Scotland[/name_f]. :finland: :us: :scotland: :rainbow_flag: [name_f]My[/name_f] wife was studying Scottish literature (Robert Burns) and I was getting my PhD in linguistics (focusing on medieval and early modern scientific writing so I still have an affinity with those periods of history). We share a love for literature, history and etymology as well as fantasy and sci-fi. We first bonded over our mutual love for the [name_m]Lord[/name_m] of the Rings! Youā€™ll often find us cuddled together on the couch watching kaiju movies, anime, or [name_f]Star[/name_f] Trek.

Our shared values are environmentalism and humanism, and we try our best to parent our toddler in eco friendly ways, such as using cloth nappies instead of disposables. As a family, we love going for long walks and foraging for elderberries, dandelions, and nettles which we use for various teas and tinctures! We try to eat seasonally when we can and like to go along with the ebb and flow of the seasons, and mark them by throwing dinner parties for friends 4 times a year (Spring equinox, summer solstice, autumn equinox, and winter solstice). All in all we just kinda vibe old folk traditions and beliefs, and enjoy especially Finnish & Celtic mythology.

[name_f]My[/name_f] wife is more extroverted than I am (she likes to get together with her friends for a tabletop RPG session once a week whereas Iā€™m happy seeing people much more sporadically). Sheā€™s into heavy metal and rock, whereas Iā€™m more into folk, indie, and jazz. When we listen to music together, itā€™s often [name_f]Queen[/name_f] (and our toddler happily dances along).

We already have a son called [name_m]Robin[/name_m]!

Hi!

When I was first going through the literature ideas, there were a lot of Annes and Williams - simple, quaint, traditional. But then, I spent some time looking at the art that you mentioned liking. (Funnily enough, an earlier prediction was heavily inspired by Millaisā€™s Ophelia painting.) A lot of the styles had corresponding themes that may relate to the names you would go for. They were colorful, clunky, mismatched, bold, warm, and quirky. I wrote the word ā€œkaleidoscopeā€ (which may be a new fav GP name lol) which really resonated with me as I thought through this prediction.

I donā€™t see you picking something modern (specifically in the ā€œhyperā€ or Y2K sense). I think the name(s) would be eccentric but they wouldnā€™t be fantasy-esque. A lot of the art was quaint and homey. I think the name would be the same - itā€™s likely to be one that isnā€™t heard often so it might not feel ā€œfamiliarā€ per se but it may feel nostalgic or make you think of a different time (almost like a past life or like you heard it in a dream).

Now how do you translate strong imagery into actual names? Personally, I thought of each name and tried to imagine if they would suit one of the books/paintings/mind castles.

Perpetua Nadine
Faustine Lourdes
Hildegard Maxima
Belen Chrysanthemum
Benedicte Socorro / Benedicte Mireille (went back and forth, thought Iā€™d pitch them both)

notes

Edited for a typo (Benedice ā†’ Benedicte) :see_no_evil:

[name_m]Hi[/name_m]! Iā€™m happy youā€™re here! (Your descriptions are always well done so thereā€™s enough to grasp onto but also not specific enough that I have to narrow in to much.)

This started out pretty solid and then it ā€¦ devolved into nonsense ā€¦ so hopefully the brambles havenā€™t taken over.

This prediction was also influenced by a playlist that I thought was apt. Some of the songs included ā€˜Weā€™re in Loveā€™ (boygenius), ā€˜Work Songā€™ (Hozier), ā€˜When We Are Togetherā€™ (The 1975). Spotify loves to label my daylist like ā€œwhistful yearning thursday morningā€ lol. This playlist note isnā€™t directly related to the predictions but it felt important.

Okay! Back to the task at hand! The style I would predict is definitely, in a word, soft. In a few more words: cozy, warm, pastoral, thoughtful, autumnal.

I donā€™t foresee you picking something totally wild - at least as a first name. Clunky, yes. Uncommon, sure. But not fantastical because it might negate some of the homey qualities that you gravitate towards. The name will likely still be cute or noteworthy (not quite seeing [name_f]Mary[/name_f] or Elizabeth). I also think that you have a wide style range that would make you a good naming partner (not a naming pushover but willing to go in a few different directions). Like, I could see you going for [name_m]Jack[/name_m] & [name_m]Theo[/name_m] as much as [name_m]Ernest[/name_m] & [name_m]Harold[/name_m]. Additionally, I might predict that youā€™d go for double middles. I think this would allow you more flexibility to include some quirky choices (e.g. [name_m]Silver[/name_m], Moss). I donā€™t typically include double middles in predictions but Iā€™m throwing one in just for the sake of it.

Another angle I took was floriography! The language of flowers. I think youā€™d choose something thoughtful and this was a way for me (or me taking a turn in your brain) to include a natural element while adding some poetry to the pick. A few stand-outs that I wanted to explain out: [name_m]Moss[/name_m] as symbolism for ā€œmaternal love,ā€ [name_f]Myrtle[/name_f] as ā€œhome; love,ā€ [name_f]Viola[/name_f] for ā€œfaithfulness; rural happiness.ā€
