[name_f]Baby[/name_f] is 24 hrs old and struggling to name her. We like both [name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] and [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] and it’s been tough to decide…I thought [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] when I saw her and husband thought [name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] which doesn’t help. We like [name_f]Promise[/name_f] as a middle name but I worry [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] [name_f]Promise[/name_f] sounds too much like a book title or too baby-ish or something. [name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] is pretty but [name_f]Promise[/name_f] has more meaning to us. I feel like [name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] [name_f]Promise[/name_f] is kinda out there for us. Big sister is [name_f]Caraline[/name_f] [name_f]Hope[/name_f] (Caroline with an a). Any advice appreciated.
Congratulations! Both are lovely names but I prefer [name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] with [name_f]Caraline[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]— it has a bit more substance and character to me.
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] is gorgeous and could be nicknamed [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] in my opinion (MG initials), but I think [name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] [name_f]Promise[/name_f] absolutely works. [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] [name_f]Promise[/name_f] is also pretty.
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Margalo[/name_f] or [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f] sprang to mind as potential long forms for [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] that would hold their own beautifully alongside [name_f]Caraline[/name_f].
[name_f][/name_f]Good luck
Big congrats on the arrival of your daughter!
My first thought is, don’t rush. I’m usually the person on here gently pushing people to name their 6-12 month olds. But it’s OK if this takes a little while.
I personally would find it hard to look at a baby and see a certain name and know for sure. Babies are so babyish - and, I sense, why babies that were Harriet in utero are suddenly called Lulu once they arrive. In your case though, Maggie and Marlowe are both names for all ages and stages which reduces the “baby face” risk.
Meanwhile, I see the two names as overlapping in associations - both outgoing & cheerful, literary (girl reading under a tree) as well as sporty and capable. Maggie is a little more open and happy, while Marlowe, to me, is a tad more introverted and boho (for want of a better word). It really is one of those “can’t lose” situations.
I like that Maggie is a twist on Margaret whole Caraline is a twist on Caroline. It’s also more established and “timeless”. Marlowe is more of its time.
But Marlowe is lovely to say and it flows better to Promise. I don’t see Marlowe Promise as “out there” - I think it’s really pretty. For some reason, also, Maggie Promise sounds like a type of promise or yes, a title of some sort, or when a kid is learning to speak and doesn’t match their verbs. I don’t think though I’d use Grace after Maggie - too many G’s. So maybe Maggie with another virtue name entirely.
But maybe it doesn’t matter - even though I agree it’s a little odd at first, I think if you’re going for Maggie, which is a delightful name (and gives some really great nickname options) use Promise as it has the most meaning for you guys, and the intensity will soften with the last name in there and over time and with use.
Would your husband be more open to Maggie as a nn for Magnolia or Marigold - so you’re getting Maggie and he’s getting something more literary and cool like Marlowe? I also like the suggestion above of Marlowe Grace for Maggie though I wonder if that’ll stick - it might be Maggie at home and Marlowe with her friends (and Dad, lol).
If I had to use one of these names, I would use Marlowe as it’s been on my list for many, many years - but with sister Caraline, Maggie really appeals.
Hope this helps with the thinking process.
Good luck!
[name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] [name_f]Promise[/name_f] is a beautiful name!
[name_f][/name_f]I love [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] as a nickname, but not a legal name as it sounds too cutesy to me for an adult’s full name.
This sounds very similar to the situation we were in when naming our son. We waited to meet our son before making our final decision and it took five days for us to decide. We were also down to two options but favoured different names.
[name_f][/name_f]I noticed over those days that I didn’t just prefer one name to the other, I felt more connected to it. I’d gradually developed an attachment over those last weeks of pregnancy. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though my husband preferred the other name, he didn’t feel a particular connection of any sort and he was happy with either. So we in the end, we chose my husband’s preferred middle name and my preferred first name.
[name_f][/name_f]There’s a couples ways I would approach your [name_f][/name_f] particular situation.
[name_f][/name_f]- [name_f][/name_f]
- [name_f][/name_f]
Start with what you both can agree on so you can find common ground. For instance, you both like [name_f]Promise[/name_f] as a middle name and it’s your most meaningful option. Working from here, you have some worries about how [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] [name_f]Promise[/name_f] comes across, and [name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] [name_f]Promise[/name_f] doesn’t really feel like you. I would ask yourself, which of these issues matters more? Which option feels more comfortable?
[name_f][/name_f] [name_f][/name_f] - [name_f][/name_f]
List the reasons why you and your husband like each option. You could do this for just the first names or for the combinations. Rank the reasons in order or importance. Consider making a pie chart or visualising how much each reason factors into your liking it. I would reflect on what you’ve learnt from the exercise. What will matter most in 1 year, 5 years, or 10 years from now?
[name_f][/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]
If you would both ultimately be happy with either name, but you’re not sure which one has the edge, I think these exercises will help clarify that.
[name_f][/name_f]If the challenge is actually that you and your husband are at a stalemate behind one name each, then I would suggest making the decision that leads to the most balance overall. For instance, which surname is your daughter getting? Does [name_f]Promise[/name_f] have more meaning to one person than the other? If you used a family name with your older daughter, whose family wasn’t included?
[name_f][/name_f]If you can, let yourselves have some time to think about it, as well as some time not thinking about. Check in with each other in a few days and go with your gut. If your family of four were the only people in the world, what name would you choose? All the best with your decision, and congratulations on your daughter’s arrival.
Congratulations!
[name_f][/name_f]I like [name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] [name_f]Promise[/name_f] best with [name_f]Caraline[/name_f]! I also like the idea of using [name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] “Maggie” so you would get both names in.
I love [name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f] warm and pretty [name_f][/name_f]- I think [name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] is familiar too enough that [name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] [name_f]Promise[/name_f] works [name_f][/name_f] I don’t think you can go wrong either way, but [name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] is my choice
[name_f][/name_f][name_f][/name_f] there’s always [name_f]Margalo[/name_f] ‘Maggie / Marlo’ if you can’t decide [name_f][/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]Hugest congratulations
Both names are lovely!
Firstly you do babe time to mull over which name suits your daughter. You do not need to rush into a decision. Take your time.
Marlowe feels very fashionable and has a cool hipster girl feel. Such a lovely name. I also think Marlowe Promise sounds gorgeous with a fun sound. I love that repeated O sounds really pretty! The name paired with your older daughter’s name feels very southern Belle in a modern Nashville country star way.
Maggie feels very sweet, soft and warm. She’s a lovely vintage choice that provides cottagecore imagery and feels homely. I think Maggie paired with Promise does have a protagonist in a novel feel but I like that. Furthermore I think Maggie is more in keeping with your firstborns name.
Personally I think making a pros and cons list over each other name would be a good way to start finalising. Also Margalo could be a good middle ground.
Good luck
[name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] is beautiful! And I absolutely adore [name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] [name_f]Promise[/name_f]
I think [name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] goes really well with [name_f]Caraline[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]! They sound perfect together.
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] [name_f]Promise[/name_f] is beautiful
There’s also Margo/Margot as a blend of the two!
I love [name_f]Maggie[/name_f]! I also prefer the spelling [name_m]Marlow[/name_m].
[name_f][/name_f]If that is your feeling with [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] [name_f]Promise[/name_f], [name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] [name_f]Promise[/name_f] gives similar book title vibes [name_f][/name_f]- which is NOT a bad thing, but something I’m pointing out if you want to avoid that.
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Maggie[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] is adorable, as is [name_m]Marlow[/name_m] Grace…Promise is kind of out there but if it has special meaning to you, who cares?! It’s your baby!
Congratulations!
I think the timelessness of [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] helps to ground the unexpectedness of [name_f]Promise[/name_f] and makes it a great combo. I think [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] works better with sister [name_f]Caraline[/name_f], too.
Maybe you can combine [name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] and [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] for [name_f]Margot[/name_f] or [name_f]Margaux[/name_f] (if you want to spell it differently)
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Margot[/name_f] [name_f]Promise[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Margot[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]
Congratulations!!
[name_f][/name_f]Oooh I also saw someone say [name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] so you can get [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]— wonderful idea too!!
Congratulations on baby girl!
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] is lovely, but [name_f]Caraline[/name_f] and [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] feel like the perfect sibset to me! [name_f][/name_f] [name_f]Promise[/name_f] is a really sweet middle; I have a friend who just used it as a middle for her son! [name_f][/name_f] [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] [name_f]Promise[/name_f] reminds me a lot of his name (Ezek!el Pr0m!se), and I love her as a little sister for [name_f]Caraline[/name_f] [name_f]Hope[/name_f]. [name_f][/name_f] I wonder if a longer name for [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] (like [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] or Marguerite?) would help or hurt the perception of [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] [name_f]Promise[/name_f] sounding like a novel title to you (it doesn’t for me, I love it!), but I love just [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] [name_f]Promise[/name_f], it’s super sweet and beautiful. [name_f][/name_f] Good luck with your decision!
[name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] [name_f]Promise[/name_f] is much better! However, thoughts on trying [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_f]Promise[/name_f]? Then you have options of calling her [name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] or [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] as a nickname!
[name_f]Love[/name_f] this suggestion of [name_f]Margot[/name_f] as a “compromise”! [name_f]Margot[/name_f] is also derived from [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] (Maggie), and both mean “Pearl”.
Congrats on your baby girl!
[name_f][/name_f]I think it depends on the vibe you are going for. I know she’s only a day old but what’s baby’s personality so far? I personally think of [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] as sweet and gentle and [name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] more spunky.
Congratulations on the birth of your 2nd daughter! I hope you and your baby girl are healthy.
[name_f][/name_f]Your options are lovely!
[name_f][/name_f]I adore [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] [name_f]Promise[/name_f]! It’s sweet, lively, friendly, and colorful. [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] is a timeless and elegant choice. [name_f]Promise[/name_f] adds a sparkle to the combo.
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] is gentle, strong, and charismatic. I think [name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] [name_f]Promise[/name_f] would be even more beautiful and interesting. I don’t think it is too much. In my opinion, [name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] [name_f]Promise[/name_f] sounds amazing!
I love that [name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] could go by [name_f]Maggie[/name_f]! I’m enchanted with the idea of [name_f]Margot[/name_f] [name_f]Promise[/name_f] nn [name_f]Maggie[/name_f]! I believe these two options would be a magnificent compromise.
[name_f][/name_f]Whatever you decide, your baby girl will receive a gorgeous name! Take your time, get to know your daughter, be patient with yourselves, and follow your hearts. I advise you to select the name that makes you feel happy and proud. I hope you can avoid unwanted comments and external pressures during this process. At the end, don’t forget that you and your husband must love the name and feel peaceful when you register the ultimate choice. Everyone else will get used to your baby’s name, no matter what they say. You child will grow into her name. It’s a difficult decision, but I’m sure that you will find the perfect idea very soon!
[name_f][/name_f]I wish you good luck with everything!
Congrats!!
[name_f][/name_f]I’d vote for [name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f], as I think it goes perfectly with [name_f]Caraline[/name_f] [name_f]Hope[/name_f]!
[name_f][/name_f]Either [name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] [name_f]Promise[/name_f] or [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] [name_f]Promise[/name_f] would sound lovely too, though.
