Mary Plus: Honest Opinions on Double First Names with Mary

I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Mary[/name] variations. The issue is, many of them have been taken by family members. My sister, grandmothers and mom all have names with [name]Mary[/name] derivatives for a first or middle name due to our family’s devotion to the Blessed Virgin [name]Mary[/name]. My husband’s family also has [name]Mary[/name] variations and he is from the South where it is common to have double first names. My grandmother and mom have double first names too, but it is not common where we live.

What are your thoughts on some of these [name]Mary[/name] “plus” names? Significance is noted.
Also, I don’t want someone to call our daughter “[name]Mary[/name]” when her name is “Mary____” so do you think I should give her a double first name and then use my maiden name as her middle name? This sounds silly, but in our family and circles, monograms are super popular, so this was my mom’s first question due to gifts for the baby.

I prefer not super traditional [name]Mary[/name] names as I went to Catholic school and don’t want her to sound like a nun, but given that I am Catholic and my husband and I like fairly traditional or classic names, it might be inevitable.

Please weigh in and also give your opinion on if the names should be [name]Mary[/name] (first) _____(middle) or [name]Mary[/name] ______(first) Maiden name (middle). Our last name is a very pleasant sounding, two syllable English name.

[name]Mary[/name] [name]Grace[/name]

[name]Mary[/name] [name]Josephine[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Zara[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Stella[/name]

Any other ideas? I tend to like less traditional accompanying names and names that are fairly flowy.

Also, what do you think about a middle name? Yea or nay? My grandmother and aunt are just Mary_____ Last Name.

Thanks for your advice! My favorites so far are [name]Mary[/name] [name]Beatrix[/name], [name]Mary[/name] [name]Virginia[/name], [name]Mary[/name] [name]Shea[/name], [name]Mary[/name] [name]Grace[/name], [name]Mary[/name] [name]Clare[/name] and [name]Mary[/name] [name]Brigid[/name].

I love [name]Mary[/name] [name]Beatrix[/name] and [name]Mary[/name] [name]Grace[/name]. very cute. I also think giving her a middle name (in addition to [name]Mary[/name] __) is a cute idea. Also, just a thought, but if you want to make sure people don’t just call her [name]Mary[/name], you could hyphenate, a la [name]Mary[/name]-[name]Grace[/name] (although I guess some people might think that is pretentious. I’m biased, I gave my son two middle names and hyphenated them, never mind pretension …)

I also like [name]Mary[/name] [name]Elese[/name], [name]Mary[/name] [name]Rachel[/name], and [name]Mary[/name] [name]Rebecca[/name]/[name]Rebekah[/name]

I love double names, especially [name]Mary[/name] names. [name]Mary[/name] [name]Jane[/name] is the sweetest name I think (hyphenated or not hyphenated). My husband will never go for a double name though and there’s no family precedent in my case. Hyphenating the name is a good idea I think for people to see when it’s written that it’s a double name. I don’t see it as pretentious.

I am in favor of Mary _____ (first) Maiden Name (middle) Last name (last)…
But maybe because I’m biased, since I have a name like that and I love it! People always seem to be fascinated by my name. great conversational topic…
I am of the opinion that double names rock! (Please no hyphens, though. I find hyphens unecessary…)
Anyway, from your list, I absolutely love:
Mary Blair
Mary Clare
Mary Shea
Mary Virginia
Mary Beatrix
Mary Augusta

But just a warning… if you go with Mary and then a second name that is more than two syllables, such as Mary Beatrix, Mary Virginia, etc., it is bound to be shortened. I know you don’t want people calling her Mary, but it is probably going to end up as a casual nn. (The casual nn does not necessarily have to be Mary. See anecdote below…) She can still be formally known as Mary ____, but I think that friends/people will naturally fall to shortening it.
Like Mary Beatrix could be Mary Bea? Mary Augusta could be Mary Gus?? Mary August?

I knew a Mary Alice, who went by Mary Alice. But her friends called her Mary A casually. It was cute.

What about…?
Mary Joelle
Mary Isabelle (i could visualize this having the casual nn of Maribelle)
Mary Quinn
Mary Justine
Mary Lane/Layne
Mary Sage
Mary Sara(h)
Mary Camille
Mary Adele
Mary Juliet

I absolutely adore [name]Mary[/name] [name]Grace[/name], [name]Mary[/name] [name]Beatrix[/name] and [name]Mary[/name] [name]Elle[/name]!! Those three are my favorites by far. I’d personally be in favor of hyphenating to make the double name clearer, but it’s up to you.

I really like [name]Mary[/name] combinations with a punchy, unusual second name.

[name]Mary[/name] [name]Lark[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Pearl[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Isis[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Poe[/name]

[name]Mary[/name] [name]Jade[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Aster[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Fern[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Crane[/name]

Sounds like [name]Mary[/name]-____ Maiden name Lastname would be a great fit for you! As far as monogramming, I would say pick either just M and middle name or the double name with no middle name just for monogramming purposes. I have 2middles as do my girls and we just drop the 2nd middle for monograms.
If you dont want it shortened to [name]Mary[/name], I would do a one syllable second name.
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Blair[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Reed[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Claire[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Rose[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Kate[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Pearl[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Grace[/name]

My favorites are [name]Mary[/name] [name]Blair[/name], [name]Mary[/name] [name]Rose[/name], [name]Mary[/name] [name]Kate[/name] and [name]Mary[/name] [name]Claire[/name]

I love [name]Mary[/name] _______ names! I would do [name]Mary[/name] (FN) ________ (1st MN) __________ (maiden=2nd MN) ___________ (last). Then, as previously mentioned, drop the second middle for monogramming purposes. Good luck!

Honestly, it depends on what the double name is.

My favorites from your list:
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Blair[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Beatrix[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Margaret[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Cate[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Eleanor[/name]

[name]Mary[/name] [name]Georgia[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Juliet[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Violet[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Alice[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Camilla[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Eloise[/name]

I like the hyphenated first name maiden middle name idea. I have two middle names and use all 4 initials when I monogram anything. [name]May[/name] look a little odd to some but that’s my name.

I like your picks of [name]Mary[/name]-[name]Grace[/name], [name]Mary[/name]-[name]Cate[/name], and [name]Mary[/name]-[name]Elle[/name]. I also love [name]Mary[/name]-[name]Michael[/name] and [name]Mary[/name]-[name]Reed[/name], very interesting choices.

Unfortunately my favorite [name]Mary[/name]-____ names have bad associations: [name]Mary[/name]-[name]Jane[/name], and [name]Mary[/name]-[name]Celeste[/name]. Very pretty, but unusable :frowning:

I love
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Kate[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Eleanor[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Juliet[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Frances[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Isabeau[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Thea[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Alice[/name] !!

From you list, I like:
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Blair[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Beatrix[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Eleanor[/name]

Other suggestions: (sorry for repeats)

[name]Mary[/name] [name]Iona[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Juno[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Lark[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] Mirth (kind of silly, but for some reason I couldn’t help suggesting!)
[name]Mary[/name] Poema
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Sabine[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Seren[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Twila[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] Venna
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Veda[/name]

Ooo love [name]Mary[/name] [name]Lark[/name] and [name]Mary[/name] [name]Veda[/name]!

I love [name]Mary[/name] [name]Beth[/name] or [name]Mary[/name] [name]Alice[/name]!

I love double names with [name]Mary[/name] too but agree the second name should be 1 one syllable second name.

I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Mary[/name] [name]Claire[/name] and [name]Mary[/name] [name]Grace[/name] and [name]Mary[/name] [name]Kate[/name]. [name]Mary[/name] [name]Claire[/name] is my absolute favorite but I am a bit biased !
I think [name]Mary[/name] [name]Rose[/name] sounds a little old fashioned but that may be just because I know 3 [name]Mary[/name] [name]Rose[/name]'s that are 50 plus.

I agree with what many have already posted. [name]Mary[/name] ____ names are great! In fact, I’m a big fan of double first names. I plan to use a double first name to honor my parents’ southern heritage.

I’m going to repeat what others have already said: Make sure the name after [name]Mary[/name] is not more than 1 or 2 syllables. If it’s too long, people are more likely to shorten it to just [name]Mary[/name].

My favorites/suggestions:
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Anne[/name]/[name]Ann[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Beth[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Frances[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Lynn[/name]/[name]Lynne[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Jude[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Charles[/name](this is a bit of a long shot seeing as [name]Charles[/name] is a boy’s name, but I’ve heard this on a girl before and thought it was cute)
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Grace[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Mae[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Kate[/name]

I’m sorry I don’t like double barrel [name]Mary[/name] names…I think they all sound super pretentious and [name]Mary[/name] [name]Jane[/name] is pot…it always will be

[name]Love[/name] “[name]Mary[/name]” names, we have a nun at our parish named [name]Mary[/name] [name]Immaculata[/name] (thats my secret fave). [name]Mary[/name]-[name]Brigid[/name] (thats two great saints) if you stick with the theme of saints you could use:

Thanks for everyone’s suggestions and input.
These are my finalists’:
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Beatrix[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Reed[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Blair[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Clare[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Virginia[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Augusta[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Elisabeth[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Shea[/name]

The top 3 I am leaning towards are:
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Beatrix[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Blair[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Shea[/name]

What do you think? [name]Do[/name] you like another name on my larger final list better than my top 3?

I am 85% positive I’d give her a middle name, my maiden name. My maiden name is a one syllable Irish name. Our last name is two-syllables very WASPy.

Thanks for your advice on hyphenating the [name]Mary[/name] double name, but stylistically, I don’t like how that looks.

Of my final choices, what are your favorites?

Also, I don’t know what goes best, if at all, with my sibset. My other children are [name]Porter[/name] [name]Ciaran[/name] and [name]Talulla[/name] [name]Ailis[/name] (Ay-lish). Thanks! Originally we were going to name [name]Mary[/name] _______ “[name]Beatrice[/name]”, but we changed our minds.
