I think I’m one of the few who likes this on a boy. It started off as a boy’s name, after all, and was then appropriated by the girls’ side several generations ago. It’s still predominantly a boys’ name in [name]Wales[/name], I believe.
Well for a boy I wouldn’t use the nn [name]Merry[/name] because that sounds like [name]Mary[/name] which equals girl to me and he might get teased for that… not sure on [name]Meredith[/name]. I have a soon to be sister in law named [name]Meredith[/name] so the name seems girly to me. She goes by Mer, which also seems girly.
If used for a boy, I would make sure it’s not a common name in the area, since other boys might tease him for having a “girls name” and maybe stick to [name]Meredith[/name] with no nn, or maybe [name]Red[/name] as a nickname.
You could also move [name]Meredith[/name] to the middle name spot, but it’s ultimately your decision. My pick would be [name]Meredith[/name] [name]William[/name].
Sorry, but to me this is like naming a little boy [name]Kimberly[/name]. Yes, it started as a boy’s name, but it’s all-girl now.
[name]Meredith[/name] has a very, very long history as a male name in [name]Wales[/name]. As far as I know, it is only in [name]America[/name] that [name]Meredith[/name] has become a predominantly female name. [name]Just[/name] another example of our cultural naming ignorance.
Some celebrity named her son [name]Meredith[/name] a while back. You are not the only person thinking of it on a boy. I say go for it if you love it. More shocking things have been done before.
[name]Meredith[/name] is very girly to me but I can see it working ok for a boy, but using the nn [name]Merry[/name] is just asking for trouble! [name]Merry[/name] is not, never was, and never will be a boys name. Its resemblance to [name]Mary[/name] only makes it so much worse. I like @catloverd’s suggestions or [name]Red[/name] as a nn. It takes a girlish name and puts a more masculine twist on it. [name]Meredith[/name] [name]Edward[/name] seems like the best combo to me.
No, I don’t think it’s a good idea.
I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Meredith[/name] on a boy! yay.
You know I actually am starting to warm up to the idea of a male [name]Meredith[/name]. I would still think girl if I saw the name though but other than that I don’t think I have a real problem with it. I personally don’t think you need a nickname for it but that’s just my opinion
I voted for [name]Meredith[/name] [name]William[/name] because to me it has the nicest flow.
There are actually quite a few Berries who like [name]Meredith[/name] on a boy, haha, and there are just as many who like [name]Aubrey[/name], or [name]Bailey[/name], or some other very gone-to-the-girls unisex name on boys. I think it’d be refreshing to meet a little boy named [name]Meredith[/name]! [name]Meredith[/name] [name]Peter[/name] got my vote, but only because I’ve been a huge fan of [name]Peter[/name] for years, and I just like saying [name]Meredith[/name] [name]Peter[/name].
I really like [name]Edward[/name] and [name]William[/name], too, though.
I’m bearish on [name]Meredith[/name] as a boy. Unless you move to [name]Wales[/name], that is. It’s a girls name to me. Sorry!
I don’t really like [name]Meredith[/name] for a boy, but my vote goes to [name]Meredith[/name] [name]Peter[/name].
I actually think it [name]Meredith[/name] nn [name]Merry[/name] would be adorable on a little boy! My husband looked shocked when I mentioned this post to him but I pointed out that one of the hobbits in [name]Lord[/name] of the Rings was named [name]Merry[/name] so it is not an unheard of usage, even in the US. Plus, meeting a little boy named [name]Merry[/name] wouldn’t be any stranger to me than meeting a little boy named [name]Kerry[/name], and I’ve known several of those. I’ve even met some masculine Kellies so I don’t think it is odd.
The problem with [name]Merry[/name] in the U.S. is there are so many girls named [name]Mary[/name], both sound the same (in my accent) so I can see him being teased for having a girls name…
[name]Meredith[/name] is actually on my long-list, for girls. BUT I can see it for a boy too! I think it’s sort of charming. I don’t know if everyone will be so accepting though. For example, [name]Ted[/name]'s whole name on HIMYM is [name]Theodore[/name] [name]Evelyn[/name]…yes, [name]Evelyn[/name] WAS a male name, but no longer.
Despite this, I still maintain that it could be very charming and sweet…but be warned, he might hate you for it in his teen years! Maybe ask some of your guy friends how they’d feel being named [name]Meredith[/name]…that might help you decide one way or another if it should be on your list. Who knows?
Anyway, I voted for [name]Meredith[/name] [name]William[/name]. I WAS going going to choose [name]Meredith[/name] [name]Edward[/name], but then, they both have “ed” in them! Not a deal-breaker, just something I noticed. [name]Ed[/name]/[name]Eddie[/name] COULD work as a nn for [name]Meredith[/name].
I think, today, this is a very bad name for a boy. It’s become much too associated with girls now. Not a good choice, and the nickname is even worse.
I think of Stargate [name]Atlantis[/name]… [name]Doctor[/name] [name]Meredith[/name] [name]Rodney[/name] McKay… all friends call him [name]Rodney[/name] but his sister calls him Mere. (like [name]Mary[/name], without the Y)
i agree kimberly is all girl now. but for some reason i think it sounds so masculine, especially with nickname [name]Kim[/name]. i think it sounds more masculine than [name]Meredith[/name], whcih i wouldnt use on a boy. ( not that i would ever use kimberly - i dont like it for either gender!
I have only ever known [name]Meredith[/name] on girl’s and so that colors my judgment. To me I would not use it for a boy but of your choices I went with [name]Meredith[/name] [name]William[/name].
I just wouldn’t do that to a boy. It might be kind of cute as a toddler but think of what life will be like as he grows up and kids start to tease him. He will only want to use his middle and who would blame him?
I once dated a guy who went by the name [name]Irving[/name] about 2 months into dating he finally confessed his real name was [name]Shannon[/name]. He was tormented as a kid by this name and started using his middle name very early on.
