So, I happened to be creeping the polls section of another baby name site that I have an account on, and I came across a poll about my sister’s name - [name_f]Mikayla[/name_f]. Except, [name_f]Mikayla[/name_f] was spelled in the most awful way I have ever seen in my life: M-I-C-K-H-A-E-Y-L-A.
MICKHAEYLA?! REALLY!?
To make matters worse, the alternative spelling:
M-C-K-H-A-E-Y-L-A
I actually had to bite my tongue (so to speak) and stop myself from going off on a tangent about how horrible and actually cruel that spelling is. [name_f]Imagine[/name_f] trying to explain to people that ‘no, it’s not [name_f]Michaela[/name_f]’ and ‘no, it’s not [name_f]Makayla[/name_f]’ etc. My younger sister is a nearly 15 year old [name_f]Mikayla[/name_f] (which is a relatively normal spelling of the name, it used to be in the US top 100), and she constantly has to correct the spelling from [name_f]Michaela[/name_f]/[name_f]Makayla[/name_f]/[name_f]McKayla[/name_f].
Am I just being cruel or, does anyone else have an urge to thrust a baby name book listing of variants of [name_f]Michaela[/name_f] into this person’s face? (I felt the same way when I saw Saryniti and Alycesaundra on Toddlers and Tiaras)
That is bad. It is kind of like emotional abuse to name your child something so horrific to spell. It’s a burden they will carry the rest of his or her life, correcting, explaining, writing. I like the name makayla however it is spelled as long as it is not too out there. As far as this name goes, I feel like the following are fine:
[name_f]Mikayla[/name_f] or [name_f]Makayla[/name_f]
[name_f]Michaela[/name_f] or [name_f]Mckayla[/name_f]
[name_f]Mckayla[/name_f], [name_f]Mackayla[/name_f], but adding extra vowels and an H is sort of absurd.
That is just awful. I’m not as opposed to alternative/unique spellings as most Berries, but for me it at least has to be phonetically accurate. I’d say Mickhaeyla as mick-hay-lah rather than muh-kay-lah. Why are all those extra letters necessary? Yes, it’s unique, but unique isn’t always a good thing!
Believe me, I wanted to, but the poll had over 15 comments telling her she was insane, so I thought I’d stay out, because I knew I wouldn’t be as kind as the previous comments on her poll
There are a few ‘alternative’ [name_f]Michaela[/name_f] spellings that I like, because [name_f]Michaela[/name_f] just seems too masculine to me. I like
[name_f]Mikayla[/name_f]
[name_f]Makayla[/name_f]
[name_f]Mikala[/name_f]
and
[name_f]McKayla[/name_f]
(I’m partial to [name_f]Makala[/name_f] but only because I know the cutest little girl with the name. It seems absolutely butchered)
But… [name_f]Makala[/name_f] is NOTHING NOTHING
Compared to Mickhaeyla.
I don’t even know how you would… What? [name_m]Just[/name_m] why?!
Hahahaha Mickhaeylaeh? That would make it even more confusing! I swear, the first time I saw it, I thought I was looking at a bowl of Alphagetti. The names some people come up with now, it’s almost frightening.
In high school I had a friend named [name_f]Mikayla[/name_f]. In elementary I knew a girl named [name_f]Michaela[/name_f]. Not a name I particularly like… Mostly because there are SO many possible “accepted” spellings… Let alone 1000 more yewneek ones.
or [name_f]Mikayla[/name_f] [name_m]Halston[/name_m] (biased because my sister’s [name_f]Mikayla[/name_f])
or [name_f]Makayla[/name_f] [name_m]Halston[/name_m]
or [name_f]Michaella[/name_f] [name_m]Halston[/name_m]
etc, etc. I’m still curious how her eldest got to be [name_f]Madalyn[/name_f], but this one ends up as Mickhaeyla.
It doesn’t justify it. She could have honored all that with [name_f]Michaela[/name_f].
Mic (mick - k) + Ha ([name_m]Halston[/name_m]) + [name_f]Ela[/name_f] ([name_f]Eyla[/name_f] - y, I’m also sure aela would be pronounced the same as eyla so there’s also that) = [name_f]Michaela[/name_f]
All her honoring done without a butchered spelling.
