I like [name]Allegra[/name], [name]Catrina[/name], [name]Romeo[/name], and [name]Dixie[/name]. Obviously can’t use them.
I know both an [name]Arian[/name] and an [name]Ivori[/name], and they both wear their names well, but I do admit I did think about the word aryan when I first met him. Also I have always wondered about [name]Ivori[/name]. Her father was black, but very light skinned and her mother was white. [name]Ivori[/name], herself, just looks white… hmm.
I know an Aaryn. He’s indian, and it fits him.
I love [name]Biddy[/name] as a nm for [name]Elizabeth[/name], but the old biddy association is what most people would think.
I’m a [name]Monty[/name] Python fan and would have considered naming a child [name]Palin[/name] after [name]Michael[/name] [name]Palin[/name], but unfortunately these days I think more people would associate the name with [name]Sarah[/name] [name]Palin[/name] I also like the name [name]Odessa[/name] for a girl, but apparently it was a branch of the S.S. in Nazi Germany, so… not so much.
There are a lot of great names that are off the table because of my husband’s last name ([name]Stone[/name]), too. [name]Miles[/name], [name]Flint[/name], [name]Jericho[/name], [name]Ruby[/name], [name]Rosetta[/name], [name]Jade[/name], etc.
I like [name]Cain[/name]/[name]Cane[/name], [name]Katrina[/name] (which I’m not American so it’s still workable), [name]Arian[/name] on a boy (I’m an [name]Aries[/name] and we’re called Arians, so it’s got that connotation to me, but you know…the whole [name]Aryan[/name] thing), [name]Delilah[/name].
[name]Minette[/name] - I think its cute and know like 3 cats with the name (it means kitten or more accurately the other word that starts with a “p”) but the phrase “faire minette” is a french term for oral sex…so it’s not exactly used for people anymore but it was in a nameberry blog post lol
@alecto [name]Odessa[/name] is also a small town in [name]Texas[/name] lol
I worked in social services for awhile and dealt with a girl who named her daughter Aryana because of the Aryan implication Im not a fan of the name, it’s nms but that definitely put me off of it and similar names forever.
The only one I can think of is Arienne. I wouldn’t use it as I prefer [name]Arianne[/name], but I really do love Arienne, too. I’m afraid everyone would go straight to [name]Aryan[/name], though, which is unfortunate! I think it’s just stunning (and I commend the momma on here who used it!).
If they didn’t have the associations they did, I would love to love [name]Delilah[/name] and [name]Lilith[/name]. They just hold too many negative images for me, but if they were gone, I’m sure I would love them! I love the nns [name]Lily[/name] and [name]Lila[/name], too, so it would be a win. If the Biblical/Jewish associations weren’t so strong. As it is, my [name]Christian[/name] faith means everything to me, and I can’t even imagine loving them, much less using them. They both have extremely negative connotations for me.
[name]Columbine[/name] [name]Odessa[/name] is on my top 20 and it’s moving up. I just love the name and flower and think part of the healing process is to un-taboo the name.
Other than [name]Columbine[/name], I am freaking having a love affair with the name [name]Jocasta[/name], but people always associate the name with the story of [name]Oedipus[/name]. Honestly though, I don’t care. I would use [name]Jocasta[/name] and I would use [name]Columbine[/name].
I love the names Shylock (the back guy in a [name]Shakespeare[/name]) and Harlot (whore), but I wouldn’t be afraid to use them. The child will be his/her own self and can change people’s perception of the name if necessary. I’m a girl named after the freaking greek god of sex. Not even the goddess, and it doesn’t affect me at all. Some people are more sensitive to that though.
[name]Yasmin[/name] …
Apparently it’s a brand of contraceptive somewhere. All I know is that it’s been one of my favourite names since I was a child and now I don’t know if I can use it.
Osama! It’s a really great name, and widely popular too until, well you know.
I deal with drugs every day at work so NO [name]Allegra[/name], Lyrica, [name]Arava[/name]!!! [name]Don[/name]'t get me started on the names of birth control pills: Alesse, Aviane, [name]Portia[/name], Lessina, Levora, [name]Yasmin[/name], etc etc!!!
Mine is [name]India[/name].
I love it, but I can understand why many people consider it an elitist, racist, relic of imperialism and, therefore, ignorant and offensive.
I agree with you but a lot of people on Nameberry seem to like [name]India[/name] so who knows.
[name]India[/name] was also a character from Gone With the Wind. I used to love the name [name]Scarlett[/name], when I was fourteen, but I think it’s too iffy a source to get names from. I’ve known black girls named [name]Ivory[/name]–I used to know two sisters named [name]Ebony[/name] and [name]Ivory[/name], which I still think is a bit much–and I think it’s a reference to the [name]Ivory[/name] Coast.
As for [name]Columbine[/name], don’t forget she’s a character from the commedia dell’arte, too. She was Harlequin’s mistress, and I thought it would be the loveliest name when I was a teenager. And then the shootings. I live in [name]Colorado[/name], and I think some people would barely bat an eye at it, and some people would be terribly upset. In the Italian her name is [name]Colombina[/name]–I don’t know that I like it as well, though.
I love the name [name]Ramses[/name]. I know it’s pretty much unusable, because of (flawed, I think!) Biblical interpretation that identifies [name]Ramses[/name] II as the Biblical pharaoh, and, more importantly, because it’s a condom brand, but I love [name]Ramses[/name] II, and I love his favorite wife Nefertari, and I love the connection to the [name]Shelley[/name] poem Ozymandias, and I think it’s such a great name.
[name]Violante[/name]. It looks way too much like “violence” and related words, and is really completely unusable in French. But it’s so elegant!
Shylock was a Jewish man in the Merchant of [name]Venice[/name], [name]Othello[/name] was the black one
I adore [name]India[/name] but I couldn’t bring myself to use it. Too much awful history.
DP and I love [name]Pagan[/name] for a girl, just for the sound, but the poor child would suffer so much from ignorant people’s reactions, it’s not worth it.
I adore [name]Lolita[/name] (:
It’s so sad that it has such bad connections, both with the novel and it’s more modern associations. [name]Shame[/name]. It sounds so spunky and sweet. [name]Lola[/name] isn’t half as pretty.
[name]Jezebel[/name] too
I agree with [name]Lolita[/name]! Such a lovely name. And the way it is described in the novel as “lyrical” and “lilting” makes me love it more. Too bad.
I agree also with [name]Violante[/name]. What a pretty sound, but yes, way too close to “violence”
