Minorly Offensive Names You Love (but can't use)

I actually WOULD use these names…
[name]Ivan[/name] (the terrible)
[name]Othello[/name] (who murdered his wife)
[name]Juliet[/name] (who murdered her self)

Having suffered through all of the teasing following the [name]Monica[/name] Lewinsky scandal, I would never name a child Monica. Because it’s my name, and yeah, the teasing sucked. It’s not a very common name, but I got teased for and in high school got a couple of comments from African-American students that they’d never seen a white [name]Monica[/name] before. Thanks.

I love Lucifer, but that has Biblical connotations I’d never be able to get around. It screams ‘satan’ to most of the population, sadly. It’s Latin for “bringer of light”, so it’s sad it has such a negative connotation.

I love the name Lucifer too! And since I am not religious at all I didn’t even know the connotation till I looked it up :~(.

Also [name]Barney[/name], I love this name but the big purple dinosaur really ruins it. Though maybe [name]How[/name] I Met Your Mother might make it a bit better for a nn? (That’s probably VERY wishful thinking)

[name]Lolita[/name] is the most beautiful name but can’t really be used now. At least I can use the nn Lo from other names I suppose.

[name]Io[/name] (eye-oh) and Europa have a certain attraction to me as well but they’re a bit obscure.

[name]Love[/name] the name [name]Lana[/name] but many people brought my attention to what it spells backwards. Officially ruled out! I’m a teacher so I know how quickly kids figure these things out and come up with cruel nicknames.

I know a few Barneys, from [name]Barnaby[/name], and I love the name  No one really associates it with the dinosaur… Or, assuming quite ignorantly that you’re from the states (and I’m British), maybe that’s cultural differences? [name]Barney[/name] from [name]How[/name] I Met Your Mother is definitely making it more usable, too.

I love - [name]LOVE[/name] - the names [name]Narcissa[/name] and [name]Bellatrix[/name], but I don’t feel like I could use [name]Narcissa[/name] because of narcissist, even though I adore the nn [name]Cissy[/name], and I think [name]Bellatrix[/name] has two adorable nn’s to go with it, [name]Bella[/name] and [name]Trixie[/name], but [name]Bellatrix[/name] Lestrange makes it off-limits, especially with me being such a huge [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] fan.

Yes I am from the states, and [name]Barney[/name] the dinosaur is a strong association with the name :~(. I hope, but when I did mention it to 2/3 different people they all looked at me crazy and mentioned him. Maybe I should just move to a different country haha!

@belle83p I would never have associated [name]Lana[/name] with anal and I dont think very many people would

I adore but can’t use [name]Dixie[/name], [name]Jemima[/name] & [name]Coen[/name] ([name]Cohen[/name]). All have offensive connotations.

I also love [name]Exie[/name] but feel a name that rhymes with Sexy is inappropriate for a modern little girl. It’s not really offensiver, per se, just wrong.

I don’t associate [name]Lana[/name] with anal, but I do associate [name]Annaleigh[/name] with analy :S

I love [name]Columbia[/name] but for me the name is tainted not by the country, but the character from [name]Rocky[/name] Horror Picture Show!
I am partial to the name [name]Enola[/name], but the tragedy associated with it is just too much ([name]Enola[/name] [name]Gay[/name] in WWII). It doesn’t help that the last name sounds an awful lot like [name]Gay[/name]…

I truly love the name [name]Shoshana[/name] but I’m torn about how Jewish you’re required to be? My boyfriend’s mother was raised Jewish but neither of our families are particularly religious.

I wouldn’t let [name]Lana[/name] spelled backwards stop my from using the name. I think it’s beautiful and simple.

@harriett - in the same with annaleigh and annaliese type names!

@dotmyiis - enola is really popular in france despite its history but I know what you mean.
I’m also torn about this name :frowning:

For those who like columbine but feel the scho tragedy is too strong of an association [name]Colombine[/name] and [name]Colombe[/name] are great options!

Heathen. I love the way that sounds as a name, but of course it would cause more trouble than it’s worth! I love [name]Pagan[/name] too, but it has the same issue. [name]Both[/name] for boys.

[name]Jezebel[/name], I think it has such a great sound, but would be hard for a child to pull off. I love [name]Barney[/name] & [name]Rudolph[/name] too but the dinosaur and reindeer connotations are just too strong in the states

The name [name]Vashti[/name] is starting to grow on me, but some may not be too keen on it because it’s after the woman in the Bible whom [name]Esther[/name] replaced. Nevertheless, it’s still on its way to my “love it” list.

[name]Lucretia[/name] is another one of my favorites, but given her tragic story, it seems a bit morbid to actually use it on a person.

I also kind of like [name]Benoit[/name] as a middle name for a boy. However, what with the circumstances that [name]Chris[/name] [name]Benoit[/name] died, I think it would just cause more discord than its worth.

Definitely hear you on that one! My BF is going to pharmacy school and asks me what I think of all these funny drug names because he knows I’m a name nerd. I think the worst one yet is Krystexxa, an injection for chronic gout. Ick!

poppy528’s post reminded me of [name]Portia[/name]. There is the [name]Shakespeare[/name] association, (which I like) but the fact it’s a birth control pill makes me weary of using it.

[name]Katrina[/name] doesn’t seem so usable anymore. What if some hurricane gets my favorite baby name and its deadly? Geesh! I looked up the list of future storm names–fortunately my favorite isn’t on there—
http://www.wmo.int/pages/prog/www/tcp/Storm-naming.html

My boyfriend’s little sister is called [name]Katrina[/name] and I thought of the hurricane when I first met her but it wore off very very quickly  They usually refer to her as [name]Trina[/name] anyway

Haha my nickname is [name]Narcissa[/name]/[name]Cissy[/name]. I love it and carry it with POTTERHEAD PRIDE, and who cares if it’s [name]Bellatrix[/name] Lestrange? IT’S BELLLATRIX LESTRANGE! She’s the kind of person who could completely revolutionize baby naming. It’s a great name and honestly, I love the character too! [name]Just[/name] go and use those!
