I’ve been thinking and thinking about day names, lately. They all feel so fun and wild! So, naturally, my mind-research has taken me back to this little nursery rhyme, as I ponder which day names are my faves:
I love nursery rhymes! Thought this would be fun to share, especially in the context of using days of the week as names.
What would your name be, based on the day of the week you were born?
If you were naming a child a day name A. keeping the nursery rhyme in mind and B. disregarding the nursery rhyme, which day(s) would you pick?
Editing To Add:
Feel free to include non-English words for various days of the week! I’ve been inexplicably drawn to Mercredi “Meri” (French for “Wednesday”) for years - for example.
I’d have been named [name_f]Tuesday[/name_f] if I were called for my birthday of the week. I think it’s suitable. I’ve always had a “ballet walk” from my naturally out-turned feet that’s masked any klutziness I’ve also got very nicely.
[name_f]Sunday[/name_f], [name_f]Monday[/name_f], and [name_f]Wednesday[/name_f] are my other three favorites for day names! The [name_f]Wednesday[/name_f] rhyme is… a doozy… but it’s almost part of the charm?
I would be [name_f]Tuesday[/name_f] based on the day I was born!
A~ Probably [name_m]Friday[/name_m]! I like it in the rhyme plus I think it has a pretty sound (and the nn [name_f]Frida[/name_f] )
B~ Definitely [name_f]Wednesday[/name_f], it’s been a favorite of mine for years. So spunky and dark and sparkly
i’d use sunday with no hesitation - both with the nursery rhyme in mind and without! it’s not even a GP, i think it’s fairly usable! and just so pretty and well, who doesn’t want to be blythe, bonny, good and gay?
i also quite like wednesday! and tuesday, but not in my accent (i say chew-sday).
and this is breaking the rules a little bit, but i know a paraskevi in real life (greek for “friday”) who goes by pari (pah-REE, like paris in french) and i’ve always found that really fun and chic!
I would’ve been [name_m]Friday[/name_m]! I don’t particularly like day names, but [name_f]Sunday[/name_f] is my favorite! Based 100% on the rhyme I’d also pick [name_m]Friday[/name_m] I do have a soft spot for [name_m]Thursday[/name_m], because on of my favorite bands has an album called Thursday’s Child (which features a song called Thursday’s Child Has Far To Go.)
I’d have been a [name_m]Thursday[/name_m]!
If I was naming a child based on the nursery rhyme I think I’d pick [name_m]Friday[/name_m], or [name_m]Thursday[/name_m]. Disregarding the nursery rhyme I’d also pick [name_m]Thursday[/name_m], it has personal significance for me and I like the sound.
I’d have been a [name_f]Wednesday[/name_f]! [name_f]My[/name_f] favorite is [name_f]Sunday[/name_f], and based on the poem I’d be a [name_f]Tuesday[/name_f]!
I would be a [name_f]Sunday[/name_f]! I’m pretty happy about that, I love [name_f]Sunday[/name_f] With or without the rhyme, I think I’d pick [name_m]Friday[/name_m]! The rhyme for it is great and I love [name_m]Friday[/name_m] on a girl. I adore @leafygreens idea of the nickname [name_f]Frida[/name_f]!
[name_f]Sunday[/name_f] was my favorite day name before this, and im had to see the description im [name_m]Saturday[/name_m] and it definitely fits and my son is [name_f]Monday[/name_f]
I would be [name_m]Saturday[/name_m]. Not my favorite as a name or as part of the nursery rhyme. I think my favorite would be [name_f]Tuesday[/name_f]!
Also, as a side note, this rhyme is always on my mind when I see all the attention [name_f]Wednesday[/name_f] gets around here. I couldn’t do it!
I would have been a [name_m]Thursday[/name_m]. If I was to pick with the rhyme in mind I’d go for [name_f]Tuesday[/name_f] or [name_m]Friday[/name_m] and if I was ignoring the rhyme I would 100% go for [name_f]Wednesday[/name_f] “Wendy”.
I do, too. So inspired! It made my jaw fall open, truly.
Miss Addams has so long been a crusader for the beauty of this charming name! I hope it has a little rise. A few months ago, I met a baby Wednesday whose mother was (as proclaimed to me by baby’s grandfather) “a bit goth.” Here’s to the gothics’ child, full of “woe.”
Wow wow wow. This nickname is amazing! I’m in love.
Totally my favorite nickname Second choice Wenna? I love!
I’m loving all these replies, everyone! So so great to read!
I’d be [name_m]Saturday[/name_m]! I’ve always loved being a [name_m]Saturday[/name_m] baby for some reason, although the rhyme doesn’t make it sound too fun Saturdays are white, airy and almost shiny in my synaesthesia brain so quite appealing.
As for naming a child, I’d be unlikely to use any days of the week tbh, but perhaps [name_m]Samedi[/name_m] nn [name_u]Sam[/name_u] or [name_f]Didi[/name_f]?
This made me come in mind that my dad calls me Sunday (the English word, but we are not English speaker lol) as a nickname because my birth name starts with a S probably? I have no idea. And that “he should just called me Sunday instead of what he called me”
And that where the country I live a couple once wanted to call a boy Friday but the court refused it because it is “unacceptable as a name” since we have name laws here and they called him Gregorio instead (Gregory, related to Friday)
Though I was born in Thursday
In an ideal world where this would not be a guilty pleasure, based on the nursery meaning a child of mine would be a Sunday.
If I could choose- Wednesday, I always loved it as a gp. Or still Sunday
Domenica is Italian for Sunday and it is actually an “actual name”! There is also Domenico, popular in the South. I would use Domenica as a middle (maybe gp)
I was born on a Tuesday!! I like [name_f]Grace[/name_f], and [name_f]Grainne[/name_f] is often translated as [name_f]Grace[/name_f] (despite having a different meaning) which I also love
