My Grandmother had the worst taste in names!

Wow, yeah I think I agree with you! What is your grandmother’s name?

[name]Lemon[/name]

My grandmothers name is [name]Virginia[/name] Fredrica. Her mother’s name was [name]Uma[/name] [name]Harriet[/name].

My grandmother named my mother [name]Michelle[/name] [name]Susan[/name] and my aunt [name]Nicole[/name] [name]Yvonne[/name], which are not too terrible (a bit plain for my taste).

My stepfather’s mother, on the other hand, had a HORRID taste in names:

[name]Anson[/name] - what?! yes, the man is just as gross as his name sounds.
[name]Lawrence[/name] nn [name]Larry[/name]
[name]Charlene[/name] nn [name]Char[/name]
[name]Judith[/name] nn [name]Judy[/name]
[name]Daniel[/name] nn [name]Danny[/name]
[name]Robert[/name] nn [name]Bob[/name] – reminds me of [name]Bob[/name] the Builder? yuck.
and my Dad’s name is [name]Ronnie[/name] [name]Noel[/name]. Why she decided to use a nn instead of the full name like the others, I don’t know. I really do like the name [name]Noel[/name] (prn. [name]Nole[/name]), so I may use that to honor my Dad. But the other names are just atrocious!

Also, it really doesn’t help that 3 of my Dad’s brothers named their sons after themselves, but instead of calling them [name]Lawrence[/name], [name]Jr[/name]., they call the kid [name]Little[/name] [name]Larry[/name]… There’s also [name]Little[/name] [name]Anson[/name] and [name]Little[/name] [name]Danny[/name]. [name]Just[/name] awful. Especially since the sons are now in their early 30s. [name]Imagine[/name] how they must feel walking into the store and people calling them “[name]Little[/name]” when they’re toting around their own kids!!

I always thought my paternal grandmother had terrible taste in names, but as I’ve gotten older, they’ve grown on me–
[name]Sterling[/name] Criffin (Criffin being a middle name of my dad, his dad ([name]Alvis[/name]), and his dad([name]Oscar[/name])) and
[name]Bonnie[/name] [name]May[/name] ([name]May[/name] being a middle name born by my aunt, grandmother ([name]Stella[/name]), and great grandmother ([name]Elsie[/name]) and maybe great-great grandmother ([name]Jane[/name] nn [name]Jennie[/name]))

My maternal grandmother chose:
[name]Olive[/name] [name]Estelle[/name]
[name]Merle[/name] [name]Janet[/name]
[name]James[/name] [name]Lee[/name] (died as an infant)
[name]David[/name] [name]Wright[/name]
[name]Sandra[/name] [name]Jo[/name]
[name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Lee[/name], and
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Linda[/name]

Lots of farming of family names to come up with that list.

That reminds me of the movie, You’ve Got Mail

[name]Kathleen[/name] [name]Kelly[/name]: I thought all that [name]Fox[/name] stuff was so charming. F-O-X.
[name]Joe[/name] [name]Fox[/name]: Well, I didn’t lie about it.
[name]Kathleen[/name] [name]Kelly[/name]: “[name]Joe[/name]”? “[name]Just[/name] call me [name]Joe[/name]”? As if you were one of those stupid 22-year old girls with no last name? “[name]Hi[/name], I’m [name]Kimberly[/name]!” “[name]Hi[/name], I’m [name]Janice[/name]!” [name]Don[/name]'t they know you’re supposed to have a last name? It’s like they’re an entire generation of cocktail waitresses.

Great quote from You’ve Got Mail! I forgot about it!!

I don’t like them too much. My mom’s mom named her kids:
[name]Angela[/name] [name]Peggy[/name] (my mom)
[name]Alecia[/name] [name]Marie[/name]
[name]John[/name] [name]Edward[/name]

Okay, but not my favorites. My dad’s mom:
[name]Michael[/name] [name]Farris[/name] (my dad, nn [name]Mike[/name])
[name]James[/name] [name]Timothy[/name] (nn [name]Tim[/name])

I guess my paternal grandmother did a better job, [name]IMO[/name].

I’ve always tried to figure out what name I would pick for myself if I had to… I still don’t know!

My maternal grandmother: [name]Caroline[/name] [name]Helen[/name] had 3 boys and 1 girl.
[name]Charles[/name] [name]Edward[/name]
Ormina [name]Charlene[/name] (my mom)
[name]Jan[/name] [name]Eric[/name]
[name]Ernest[/name] [name]Anthony[/name]

I always thought my mom’s name was bizarre and never liked having to explain that “[name]Jan[/name]” was my uncle, not my auntie.

My mum’s mum called her kids [name]Anne[/name] (my mum), [name]Andrew[/name] and [name]Helen[/name]. I always thought it was kind of weird that there was an [name]Anne[/name] and an [name]Andrew[/name] in the same family.

My dad and his siblings are:
[name]George[/name] [name]Peter[/name] (my dad- he was called [name]George[/name] after his dad who was called [name]George[/name] [name]Derek[/name], but my dad and grandad have both only ever gone by their middle names)
[name]Valerie[/name] [name]Joy[/name]
[name]John[/name] [name]Michael[/name]
[name]Mark[/name] (not sure about his middle name)
[name]Rosemary[/name] [name]Jill[/name] (who has always been called [name]Jill[/name])

My maternal grandparents, [name]August[/name] & [name]Martha[/name], named their children:

  1. [name]Wilfred[/name] [name]John[/name]
  2. [name]Alma[/name] [name]Dora[/name] ([name]Dora[/name] after her maternal grandmother)
  3. My Mother - ‘[name]Mary[/name] [name]Jane[/name]’ [name]Ernestine[/name] ([name]Ernestine[/name] after her paternal grandmother)
  4. [name]Helen[/name] [name]Martha[/name]
  5. [name]Cecilia[/name] [name]Bernice[/name]

My paternal grandparents, [name]Luther[/name] & [name]Irene[/name], named their two boys:

  1. My dad- [name]Luther[/name] Melanchthon, [name]Jr[/name]. (name is from historical figures [name]Martin[/name] [name]Luther[/name] & [name]Philipp[/name] Melanchthon)
  2. [name]Donald[/name] [name]Lee[/name] ([name]Lee[/name] being the maiden name of his paternal grandmother)

My great grandmother had the worst taste in names

I find some of these really nice or charming!

[name]Ernest[/name] “[name]Ernie[/name]” and [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Marie[/name] “[name]Betty[/name]”
[name]Ernest[/name] “[name]Ernie[/name]”
[name]Linda[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name]
[name]Robert[/name] “[name]Bob[/name]”
[name]Richard[/name] “[name]Dick[/name]”
[name]Ronald[/name] “[name]Ron[/name]” (Yes, all in a row, though I’m not sure if [name]Dick[/name] or [name]Bob[/name] is older)
[name]Gary[/name] [name]Mark[/name] (my dad)
[name]James[/name] “[name]Jim[/name]”
[name]Ann[/name] [name]Marie[/name] “[name]Ann[/name]”

[name]Junior[/name] [name]Vincent[/name] “[name]John[/name]” and [name]Susan[/name] [name]Jane[/name] “[name]Sue[/name]” (The story I heard is that his parents were confused about how to make him a jr.)
[name]Denise[/name] [name]Elaine[/name]
[name]Billy[/name] (might have been a nickname, died shortly after birth)
[name]Lindsey[/name] [name]Jane[/name] (my mom)

[name]Gary[/name] & [name]Lindsey[/name]:
[name]Jessica[/name] [name]Jane[/name] “[name]Jessi[/name]”
[name]Rebecca[/name] [name]Rose[/name] “[name]Becky[/name]”
I’m [name]Jessi[/name]. I do not like [name]Jessi[/name] for a girl.

My DH:
[name]George[/name] & [name]Lucy[/name] Fields (given middle name, not maiden name):
[name]Judy[/name] (not sure whether full name is [name]Judith[/name])
[name]Sandra[/name] “[name]Sandy[/name]”
[name]Donald[/name] “[name]Donny[/name]”
[name]Cynthia[/name] [name]May[/name] “[name]Cindy[/name]” (his mom)
[name]Patricia[/name] “[name]Patty[/name]”
[name]Katherine[/name] [name]Ruth[/name] “[name]Kathy[/name]” (not sure if it’s [name]Katherine[/name] or [name]Kathryn[/name])
[name]Russell[/name] “[name]Rusty[/name]”
[name]Thomas[/name] “[name]Tommy[/name]”
(Not completely sure on the order, but [name]Cindy[/name]'s in the middle, [name]Judy[/name] is eldest, [name]Rusty[/name] or [name]Tommy[/name] is youngest, and I think I have everyone on the right side of my [name]MIL[/name])

[name]Alfred[/name] [name]James[/name] [name]Jr[/name]. & [name]Rhoda[/name] [name]May[/name] (who chose excellent names):
[name]Jean[/name] (girl)
[name]Thomas[/name] “[name]Tom[/name]”
[name]Alfred[/name] [name]James[/name] III “[name]Al[/name]”
[name]Peter[/name] [name]Sidney[/name] (my FIL)
(Not sure if [name]John[/name] or [name]Stephen[/name] is older. I know one of the other 3 boys has mn [name]Philip[/name]. Her sons agree that she has great taste in names, because every one except [name]John[/name] (who had only daughters) passed their name on. So far (that I know of) there is also an [name]Alfred[/name] [name]James[/name] V and [name]Peter[/name] [name]Sidney[/name] III.

[name]Peter[/name] [name]Sidney[/name] & [name]Cynthia[/name] [name]May[/name]:
[name]Peter[/name] [name]Sidney[/name] [name]Jr[/name].
[name]Benjamin[/name] [name]Alfred[/name] “[name]Ben[/name]”

I actually dont mind my grandparents taste in names.

[name]Stephanie[/name] [name]Ann[/name] - dated, but nothing wrong with it.
[name]Valerie[/name] [name]Grace[/name] - I [name]LOVE[/name] my moms name!

My great grandparents had amazing names for their 4 kids:

& [name]Benjamin[/name]

Sorry about your grandma. I think my gram did great with her kids names (even if a lot were recyled):

Grandparents: [name]Margaret[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Delores[/name] & [name]Richard[/name] [name]Melvin[/name]

[name]Margaret[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] - “[name]Peggi[/name]”, named after herself.
[name]Annie[/name] [name]Catherine[/name]
[name]Julia[/name] [name]Joan[/name] - “[name]Julie[/name]”
[name]Richard[/name] [name]Melvin[/name], [name]Jr[/name]. - “[name]Ricky[/name],” named after himself, though Pop went by [name]Dick[/name].
[name]Robert[/name] [name]Melvin[/name] - “[name]Robby[/name]” (twins)
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Annie[/name] - “[name]Cap[/name]”
[name]Nora[/name] [name]Loretta[/name] - Pop wanted it reversed for the singer, [name]Gram[/name] said no. [name]Nora[/name] was her sister’s name.
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] - occasionally “[name]Marybeth[/name]”
[name]Joan[/name]-[name]Marie[/name] [name]Julia[/name] - she changed it to [name]Jone[/name]-[name]Marie[/name], but mostly goes by “[name]Jone[/name]”/"[name]Jonah[/name]"
[name]Carolee[/name] [name]Jude[/name]

My maternal grandparents, [name]Loyd[/name] [name]Napoleon[/name] (only one L in [name]Loyd[/name] and yes [name]Napoleon[/name].) and [name]Minnie[/name] [name]Louella[/name] (she HATED “minnie” no one ever mentioned it. She went by [name]Louella[/name]) named their children:

[name]Jimmie[/name] (yes, just [name]Jimmie[/name], he goes by [name]Jim[/name])
[name]Lola[/name] [name]Joyce[/name] (she hates [name]Lola[/name], goes by [name]Joyce[/name], we often call her [name]Lola[/name] to tease her)
[name]Wanda[/name] [name]Lynn[/name] (I think I gave her the worst nickname by calling her “Aunt Wannie” as a child…I still call her that :))
[name]Ima[/name] [name]Jean[/name] (she usually just goes by “[name]Ima[/name]”, she was named after an uncle “[name]Gene[/name]” but Mamaw made up this spelling instead of “[name]Imogene[/name]”)
Daphene [name]Jewell[/name] (used to go by [name]Jewell[/name], now Daphene, hates that it is spelled with the extra “e”)
[name]Beverly[/name] [name]Ann[/name] (my Mom, I think she got off pretty easy, considering, even though [name]Beverly[/name] isn’t my favorite name ever)

My paternal great-grandmother was [name]Nannie[/name] [name]Mae[/name], She and [name]William[/name] [name]Ed[/name] named their only child
[name]William[/name] [name]Armand[/name] (goes by [name]Armand[/name])
He and my grandmother [name]Peggy[/name] [name]Lee[/name] named their two sons
[name]Timothy[/name] [name]Allen[/name] (my dad)
[name]Jeffrey[/name] [name]Armand[/name]

I am [name]Julia[/name] Nikol (named after Grandma [name]Peggy[/name]'s grandmother, [name]Julia[/name]) and “Nikol” was to keep it 5 letters to match my first name

My husband, [name]Jordan[/name] [name]Stephen[/name] and I named our daughter
[name]Abby[/name] [name]Nicole[/name] ( i like my middle name, but this spelling better)

I think my Mamaw had some odd, but definitely interesting and unique names for her kids!

I wish I had some family history documents around! I know some of my great aunts and uncles but not all of them! Here’s what I know:

Maternal Grandmother’s children ([name]Georgia[/name] [name]Jane[/name] and [name]Ronald[/name])
[name]Jenny[/name] [name]Lynn[/name]*

My Paternal Grandmother ([name]Lila[/name] [name]Christine[/name] “[name]Chris[/name]” and [name]Owen[/name] [name]Clyde[/name])
[name]Terrance[/name] [name]Lee[/name] “[name]Terry[/name]”*
[name]Diana[/name] [name]Suzanne[/name] “[name]Sue[/name]”

My parents: [name]Jenny[/name] [name]Lynn[/name] and [name]Terrance[/name] [name]Lee[/name] had:
[name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Michelle[/name] (me)
[name]Kathleen[/name] [name]Erin[/name]
[name]Samuel[/name] [name]Clyde[/name]
[name]Tyler[/name] Moroni (it’s a Mormon name)

And for fun, this is what I know of my DH’s side:

Maternal Grandparents: [name]Violet[/name] & [name]Willard[/name]
[name]MIL[/name]: [name]Holly[/name] [name]Celeste[/name]
Paternal Grandmother: [name]Lucille[/name]
FIL: [name]Duane[/name] [name]Dee[/name]

[name]Holly[/name] [name]Celeste[/name] & [name]Duane[/name] [name]Dee[/name] had:
[name]Bradley[/name] [name]Carl[/name]
[name]Nathan[/name] [name]Dee[/name] (my DH)
[name]Christopher[/name] [name]Luke[/name]

Us: [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Michelle[/name] & [name]Nathan[/name] [name]Dee[/name] have:
[name]Sebastian[/name] [name]Dee[/name]
[name]Oliver[/name] [name]Lee[/name]

My mom’s side of the family is Italian, and my [name]Nonna[/name] imigrated to [name]Canada[/name] in her very early twenties, just before her first child was born. Since she was from [name]Italy[/name], they all have Italian names…

[name]Graziella[/name] + [name]Amalia[/name] (My mom goes by [name]Grace[/name])

I think [name]Grace[/name] is my favourite, and even if that isn’t her real name, I still think [name]Graziella[/name] is the best.

Bounce

I know this topic is a bit older, but I wanted to contribute!

I don’t think my maternal grandmother”s taste in names was too bad. You can almost tell the children were born from 55-75 or so.

[name]Patricia[/name] [name]Ann[/name] & [name]Howard[/name] [name]Corbin[/name] had:
[name]Kenneth[/name] [name]Dwayne[/name]
[name]Lizbeth[/name] [name]Karen[/name]
[name]Howard[/name] [name]Warren[/name]
[name]Patrick[/name] [name]Corbin[/name]
[name]Donna[/name] [name]Kay[/name]
[name]Virginia[/name] [name]Lynn[/name]

My paternal grandmother, with one she did great the other was a flop!

[name]Patty[/name] [name]Jean[/name] & [name]Joseph[/name] [name]Barkley[/name] had:
[name]Joseph[/name] [name]Timothy[/name] (My father, I love his name.)

Her second child, different marriage, was [name]Judy[/name] [name]Sue[/name] (Oh, how I have wish she were a [name]Judith[/name] [name]Susanne[/name] instead!)

As for my parents, [name]Donna[/name] [name]Kay[/name] and [name]Joseph[/name] [name]Timothy[/name] had:
[name]Patricia[/name] [name]Ann[/name]
[name]Joseph[/name] [name]Corbin[/name]
