Name Rants

[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] does not mean “blessed”.

[name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] does not mean “beautiful rose”.

[name_f]Rosamund[/name_f] does not mean “rose of the world”.

They’re associated with similar Latin words that do have these meanings, but that’s not their origin. They mean “voyager”, “soft/flexible horse”, and “horse protection”. They’re not bad meanings. You don’t have to jazz them up.

Overall, those are nice sentiments, but it’s not etymologically correct to say that those are the meanings.

Thank you! [name_f]Rose[/name_f] was a name before the [name_u]French[/name_u] brought it over, it also had to do with horses. However, then the [name_u]French[/name_u] revived it, and now we associate it with the flower.

I also can find no evidence of Mary/Maria having a sea meaning. It’s possible the Romans associated it with their word for sea, mare. It most likely means rebellion or bitter.

I have a similar issue with people saying Catherine and its many variants (e.g. Katie, Caitlin) mean “pure”. The misconception seems so ingrained that I don’t think it will ever go away.

I suppose “it means “pure”” is easier to explain than “it could mean a variety of things, none of which are “pure””.

From Behind the Name:

The etymology is debated: it could derive from an earlier Greek name Ἑκατερινη(Hekaterine) , itself from ἑκάτερος (hekateros) meaning “each of the two”; it could derive from the name of the goddess HECATE; it could be related to Greek αἰκία (aikia) meaning “torture”; or it could be from a Coptic name meaning “my consecration of your name”. In the early Christian era it became associated with Greek καθαρός (katharos) meaning “pure”, and the Latin spelling was changed from Katerina to Katharina to reflect this.

Why do I desperately want to name a child [name_f]Claudia[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f] “lame torture” right now

Me too! I seem to have very specific phonetic preferences which makes it so difficult to find names I love that could be used in the same sibset

Personally, I like to put the meaning for Mary as “love” or “beloved” when writing down the meanings of my combos.
Taken from BtN: The meaning is not known for certain, but there are several theories including “sea of bitterness”, “rebelliousness”, and “wished for child”. However it was most likely originally an Egyptian name, perhaps derived in part from mry “beloved” or mr “love.”

I mean it sort of does but you’re right that this was not its first meaning. However, this spelling is likely inspired by the Latin phrase rosa linda “beautiful rose” and part of what made it popular, too, I assume.

80% of the boys’ names I like seem to end in -er/-or/-ur/-ar which all sound super similar both in my English accent and in German.

I have the same problem! With -o ending names too and -ine. [name_m]Casper[/name_m], [name_m]Grover[/name_m], [name_m]Elmer[/name_m] etc and then [name_f]Clio[/name_f], [name_m]Otto[/name_m], [name_m]Arno[/name_m] and [name_u]Lupine[/name_u], [name_f]Mazarine[/name_f], [name_f]Maxine[/name_f]

Why do all my favourite names have the tendency of being criticized by users of various internet forums for sounding/looking like: a type of medical condition, a type of medicine, an awkward body part or a weird word :sob:  ???

Me and my mismatched all girl sibset, [name_f]Azula[/name_f], [name_u]Kahlo[/name_u] and [name_f]Mavis[/name_f] at least they all have 5 letters

I just fell for a name at first glance, but it is unfortunately fighting for attention with one of my top names. The name on my list, [name_f]Annika[/name_f], vs the name I fell for, Inika.

Ahhhh…

Inika is nice!

I’m frustrated because “established as a name” is a condition I set for my own children’s names, and that makes finding new ones so much harder. Sometimes I feel like I’ve already seen every name ever used, to discover something new, I’d have to make something up.

I don’t know if this helps you to narrow it down at all since this is pretty specific to just the Nordic countries, but Inika sounds wonderfully fresh to me! [name_f]Annika[/name_f] is lovely too, but I’ve met a lot of Annikas in their 30s/40s so it doesn’t sound as exciting.

Oh no, that’s so annoying! Can you give a few examples?

I know this may not even happen, but… Right now there are three boys names that I love equally, how am I ever going to make a choice if we have another boy one day? :sob:
And for a girl there’s only one name I love as much as my boys names, but SO doesn’t want to use it. What if I never find a name I love that much for a girl again? :sob: There are some I like a lot, but none of them feels like the one.
