Naming twins

This is really just a general naming question, but do you think if you found out you were pregnant with twins it would change the way you named them? Would you still use the names you’ve come up with when thinking you were having individual pregnancies or would you come up with something different for the twins? And while we’re here, I guess we should name our twins! Creating sibsets for each gender possibility of course! I’ll be back with mine later

I like to keep to letter sets like
[name]Isla[/name] and [name]Ruby[/name] (GG)
[name]Isla[/name] and [name]Abel[/name] (GB)
[name]Abel[/name] and [name]Grey[/name] (BB)

4 letters for each name seems to balance without being too matchy.

^ I quite like that idea myself

I’m glad you do! I think children need to be recognized as individuals and also as twins. Using letter matching you can make a subtle match that won’t haunt them for the rest of their lives.

If I had twin daughters, I would give them my top two girl name picks. [name]Lila[/name] and [name]Elle[/name]. I don’t like the whole letter matching thing, either and wouldn’t do it. They are individuals. I know a girl who actually named her twins [name]Heaven[/name] and [name]Nevaeh[/name] - gag!

Well me being me, when I had my twins it did influence the way I named them. The theme I chose was one twin after husband’s dad and one twin after my dad. Now…had it not been twins and just one boy…I doubt we would of named him after anyone’s dad to prevent anyone feeling left out. But whatever it was…i felt strongly that there had to be a theme or the names had to be linked in some way instead of just picking 2 random names.

I would choose classics with a subtle theme:

G/G
[name]Bridget[/name] and [name]Charlotte[/name] (each has 2 syllables) OR
[name]Maeve[/name] and [name]Rose[/name] (1 syllable)

G/B
[name]Anna[/name] and [name]Jack[/name] (each has 4 letters)

B/B
[name]Griffin[/name] and [name]Patrick[/name] (both are 2 syllables with Irish history)

I’m trying to name twins at the moment and this is something i’m going over too! It definitely does affect the way I name, and I’m finding it harder this time because I’d like them to, not so much match, but be in harmony at least.

I would name them as individuals. I definitely don’t like matching of any kind and I’d actually probably try to differentiate the names on purpose. Twins just share so much of their lives, in my opinion more than any other kind of relationship on the planet, and I think it’s nice for them to at least have distinct names.

That said, REALLY subtle themes (like same number of letters or same style) don’t bother me. Actually one of my favorite ideas for a g/b twinset is [name]Bellamy[/name] and [name]Auden[/name]- both are surnames that mean “good friend.” I think in actual usage, though, they’re different enough to work, and the meaning is almost a “secret” that they could share.

I wouldn’t do matching at all, they’re going to have a hard enough job being individual without [name]Brayden[/name] being constantly called [name]Jayden[/name] and vice versa. That [name]Heaven[/name] and [name]Nevaeh[/name] twinset that was mentioned is just awful.

My current choices:

B/B - [name]Edward[/name] ‘[name]Eddie[/name]’ and [name]George[/name]
G/B - [name]Harriet[/name] and [name]Joseph[/name]
G/G - [name]Phoebe[/name] and [name]Imogen[/name]

The B/B and G/G share the same number of letters but that’s not intentional at all, they’re just the names I like. If I do match, it would be through a subtle theme with the middle name, but as my first daughter is getting my middle name (family name, and I want to carry it on) that may not necessarily even happen.

I keep thinking about this even though I’m pretty sure I’m having a single:

[name]Romilly[/name] & [name]Allegra[/name] - 3 syllables and the double-L but not matchy, both old-fashioned feminine but strong names
[name]Leo[/name] & [name]Max[/name] - just love these two together and I know a pair too.
[name]Xavier[/name] & [name]Vincent[/name]
[name]Isla[/name] & [name]Maeve[/name]
[name]Evan[/name] & [name]Maeve[/name]
[name]Sebastian[/name] & [name]Frances[/name]
[name]Eleanor[/name] & [name]Lucas[/name]

My cousin has twin boys and they picked one Italian name (her side) and one Welsh name (his side) so: [name]Owen[/name] and Vigo - which ( think do not go well together AT ALL!

I think sounds and eras are more important than number of letters. So mirroring the L sound is good in [name]Lucas[/name] & [name]Eleanor[/name] or the S in [name]Sebastian[/name] and [name]Frances[/name].

I agree with all of the above…but my theme…after each of our fathers gave us good solid boys names…[name]David[/name] [name]John[/name], which was my father-in-laws name in reverse and [name]Stephen[/name] [name]Raymond[/name] which was my dad’s name in reverse. [name]Both[/name] fathers have since passed away so i’m really glad we did this. The ‘theme’ can be as subtle as you want it to be…but I think makes choosing easier. Its hard enough picking one name let alone 2!

I love the name [name]Thomas[/name] but haven’t used it b/c it doesn’t sound all that nice with my last name but since the name [name]Thomas[/name] means twin I might have to go ahead and use it if he were going to be a twin.

I would just use my favorites names, I already take into consideration what they would sound like together for sibilings anyway. I wouldn’t want my twins names to match but to be in the same style.

B/B – [name]Dexter[/name] [name]Elijah[/name] [name]Thomas[/name] & [name]Theodore[/name] [name]Nolan[/name] [name]Grey[/name].
G/G – [name]Iris[/name] [name]Juliet[/name] [name]Maeve[/name] & Esmee [name]Pandora[/name] [name]Wren[/name].
B/G – [name]Dexter[/name] [name]Elijah[/name] [name]Thomas[/name] & [name]Iris[/name] [name]Juliet[/name] [name]Maeve[/name].

I even find that [name]Iris[/name] and Esmee might be a bit too similar to each other for me to use together but they are my top two favorites right now.

I like individuality while using the same ending sounds. For example…

My current choices:

B/B: [name]Judah[/name] and [name]Elijah[/name]
G/G: [name]Melina[/name] and Alaynah or [name]Melina[/name] and [name]Arabella[/name]
G/B: [name]Melina[/name] and [name]Judah[/name]

I’d be tempted to go a little bit matchy with the boys, since two of my favorite boys names are very similar, but hopefully, I’d manage to hold back.
B/B: Adrian Silas & Jasper Milo; Jasper Milo & Rufus Something; Julian Everett & Emmett Something/Rowan Felix/Theodore Gray
B/G: Jasper Milo & Rose Alexandrine; Theodore Gray & Ruby Kerensa
G/G: Catherine Annabel & Josephine Alice; Charlotte Amelia & Philippa Iris; Lydia Jane & Louisa Imogen; Audrey Vivien & Helena Juliet

I don’t like matchy-matchy or themed names of any sort for siblings, whether they’re twins or not, so I wouldn’t change my approach at all. I’d still be looking for names I love, with positive associations, that sound good with my last name, and can co-exist harmoniously with names already in the family. I’d just be looking for two combos instead of one. Luckily, my top favorites would work equally well for singleton siblings or twins. I’d just have to rearrange some of my middle name choices.

I wouldn’t do same initials or too similar, but I would maybe have a theme like number of syllables or letters or something in the middle name.

[name]Alba[/name] [name]Winter[/name] and [name]Iris[/name] [name]Maeve[/name]
[name]Luca[/name] [name]Ronan[/name] and [name]Valo[/name] [name]Cormac[/name]
[name]Alba[/name] [name]Winter[/name] and [name]Luca[/name] [name]Ronan[/name]

I find this a very interesting topic. Most berries would never do the matchy thing, but I find that the general public still does. i just had a friend that had b/g twins. She named them [name]Madeline[/name] and [name]Miles[/name]. She didn’t mean to match, but just liked both names. I personally don’t have a problem with using the same initial, but wouldn’t set out to do that. Rhyming is just beyond horrible. I would want twin names to fit in with my other kids names.

I would use my top picks. I don’t like the idea of matching names for twins and I don’t think my top picks have any theme, but they do have similar feel.

B/B - [name]Julian[/name] & [name]Vincent[/name]
G/G - [name]Eloise[/name] & [name]Willa[/name]
B/G - [name]Julian[/name] & [name]Eloise[/name]
