Maturity warning: Brain cancer and burglary.
Jessa Scarlett Lively (43) is Piper’s nurse. She is Andrew’s adoptive sister but the two don’t speak to each other, but it isn’t Andrew’s fault and he is a nice person. She is a single mother of a 20-year-old non-binary child who may be Raina’s potential match. She is widowed after her husband, the child’s father, died of brain cancer when her child was 2, which inspired her to get into nursing. During Piper’s teenage years, she also mentored her but because she was a juvenile, Jessa still needed her mother and stepfather’s consent. Jessa had many patients and knew many things about them on record, but per the law, she could not legally disclose any patient’s medical information to anyone. In the case for juveniles, if it wasn’t a medical emergency, she couldn’t disclose information to her mother or stepfather so she knew Piper was lesbian and kept it a secret from them until Piper made the decision herself to come out. Even if Piper was under their control, Jessa told her that she was a smart girl with the power of knowledge. After all, as long as people don’t know, they are under the people who know.
Jessa was the kind nurse who always seemed to want her patients to be happy with her and definitely wanted them to trust her. Jessa’s child came out as non-binary in their teenage years and started using the pronouns they/them, which Jessa supported. Jessa and Andrew lived closer together and she met his children and always supported them as a mother figure. The hardest thing for Jessa to accept was her child, now an adult at 18, moving out. She knew every adult had to move out but she wanted her child to stay and said she had more to teach them about her life and how to be like her. Jessa’s child said they didn’t want to be a nurse and wanted to find their own path and was sorry but they needed to move forward in life and promised to still contact her as much as possible. Jessa reluctantly agreed and while many of her family and friends thought she may have sounded clingy in the moment, they knew she didn’t have her husband and now her child was moving out, so she was living alone and may have truly felt alone. How could they judge her for what she was going through if they didn’t know what it was like? After all, as long as people don’t know, they are under the people who know. However, Jessa was able to bounce back into her cheery mood by contacting her child as promised and becoming good friends with her patients.
Things changed recently, and not in a good way. News spread that houses across the city were being burgled by a mystery masked person. A patient of Jessa’s walked into her care. Jessa acted completely shocked by the patient describing his house being burgled and Jessa asked if the burglar hurt him, luckily he was not assaulted, but he had only minor hip injuries tripping while trying to chase off the burglar. He says he still had stuff missing, including his wife’s valuable jewels. Jessa told him that everything will be okay in the end and the police will make sure he gets the stuff back. He asked if the medical bills were going to remain high since recently he had gone in and paid the bill but more money was taken from his bank account afterward. Jessa told him that she knew nothing about that but it may have been maintenance fees and that she still couldn’t get over the gas prices but told him to keep his wallet in a safe place when he’s in his house in case the burglar used his card. A few others had said the same but some said they may have underpaid their bills. They also spoke up and said they had their houses robbed. At this point, Jessa was visibly shaking and her family and friends were asking what she was freaking out about. Could she be next? Jessa told them she feared she could be a prime target — she had a successful job and she lived all by herself. Andrew offered to let her stay with him and his kids. He said it would be no problem and it was just like childhood with big bro looking out for little sis when she was scared. She said she wanted to sleep on the couch closest to the windows and back door so she could see if the house was getting burgled and run away if it was. Andrew related to Jessa a lot since Andrew was orphaned after his mother died of cancer, just like Jessa’s late husband. His father was arrested after being a drug dealer, which made him wary of criminals. Andrew asked Jessa if she gives her family medical deals, and especially because his family was helping her, she agreed to give them free treatment. Jessa asked if she could stay until the burglar was caught and arrested, and he agreed. However, that night, despite 5 people in the house, the house was burgled. A window near the front was broken so Andrew believed Jessa couldn’t see who did it since she slept in the back of the house and the window broken was Elio’s, who had already moved out, so no one was sleeping in that room. Andrew and his wife woke up but could not catch the burglar in time. Jessa was gone that night, which Andrew was afraid of because he feared the burglar would have kidnapped her, but she called him that morning crying while saying she was safe and she escaped like she said she would if the house was burgled and said she packed her bags and didn’t want to live with them anymore because it was too unsafe.
Jessa went back to work the next day and maintained her bright and sunny composure to the patients and other employees. She didn’t tell anyone about what happened the previous night. However while she was on her lunch break, her now-20-year-old child along with Andrew’s son Elio and daughter Gigi comforted her and told her they knew what happened. She looked like she was going to cry again but they told her she is a strong woman no matter what and praised her on her ability to act happy despite her circumstances. She brushed them off and said it was no big deal and just her job. After clocking out from work, she noticed someone outside the hospital following her and he confronted her. She recognised him as one of her patients. He yelled at her. He told her that he had a massive bill from the hospital and said that several houses have been burgled in his neighborhood. She told him she knew and she’s angry too but she’s not responsible for the robberies. He told her that she was responsible for the robberies and knew she didn’t rob his place because of the high security on his house, so she overcharged his bills extremely high. He said she should cut the act out and stop acting like she’s a victim of the burglaries when she is the burglar. She freaked out, not because she was wrongly accused but because she was correctly accused. The entire time of her acting scared of the burglar was an act. She was truly happy at the start of the day and had only pretended to cry when Elio, Gigi, and her child saw her to cover up. As a nurse she had her patients’ records and knew where they all lived. The overcharged bills and huge fees on the credit cards? She did all of that, at first just overcharging people who couldn’t afford their medical bills to doing this to anyone at any time and making them especially steep for high-security homes she couldn’t get away with burgling. She was a nurse and figured nobody would suspect a nurse as a burglar. Jessa was an evil genius, but just not smart enough. All those overcharging bills were to the hospital and tied directly to her bank account. She was able to flee and use an ambulance to drive away but her brother Andrew called her saying he knew she was the secret robber she was pretending to be afraid of and that he knew because the two children who lived with him caught her the previous night and that he was going to report her while she insisted he shouldn’t because “they are siblings”, which he didn’t repent to. Having no other way to flee forever, she went to an airport and took a random plane to flee and ended up fleeing to Nicaragua. While she was on the plane, more people she knew were finding out, including her non-binary child who wants nothing to do with her and Piper who said “How could she do that? I relied on her when I was still in the closet. I trusted her!” Granted, because she fled away in a hurry, she left behind her stolen belongings and she more information was found in her car, which she left behind when she drove the ambulance to the airport. The bankers transferred any money she stole via the fraud fees back to the people who were overcharged. She is infamous and hated within the community and is wanted by the police. Her non-binary child deleted her as a contact and will never talk to her again and wonders why she did it, but believes her lack of fulfillment made her greedy and her greed made her evil. Her non-binary child is grateful to have moved out and not lived with her and wonders if she would have made them a criminal had they stayed. However despite her new notoriety, she’s still not caught and is believed to be traveling all over Central and South America and could be anywhere, but only she knows where. After all, as long as people don’t know, they are under the people who know.
