“That was Loflin. [name_m]Walsh[/name_m] Loflin, to be exact.” [name_f]Natasha[/name_f] glanced to me and [name_m]Chadwick[/name_m]. “Not that you two know who he is. It’s better off, anyway. Back on track, though, [name_m]Zach[/name_m], you’re the lucky winner.” She grimaced, tucking a strand of her dark red hair behind an ear. “You’ll be working with me to dig up [name_f]Viv[/name_f]’s dirty secrets.”
“[name_m]Stanford[/name_m],” I said in his ear, “I need to talk to you.” I didn’t sugarcoat my words—though that I was perfectly capable of doing. I didn’t yell at him—even though I wanted to very much . Instead, I kept my voice low and steely.
[name_f]Ayla[/name_f] froze, her heart’s pounding and the crashing of waves in the distance creating a horrible whirl of noise in her ears. She doubted, if dragons existed here, she’d have heard its roar over the sounds that fuelled her panic.
“Molly, come back! It’s not safe!” [name_f]Anna[/name_f] yelled, but her shouts were drowned out by a deafening roar.
Yet her little sister stood there, perfectly calm, and what left her mouth next wasn’t a word [name_f]Anna[/name_f] recognised at all.
“Evnryth?”
And the dragon that [name_f]Anna[/name_f] had been trying to save [name_f]Molly[/name_f] from replied.
We delivered [name_f]Natasha[/name_f] to her house. The entire car ride was silent, save for Natasha’s occasional navigational comment. We all sat in quiet disregard, trying to ignore each other. I desperately wanted someone to say something, but I just stayed there, plummeting to the bottom of my Pit of Guilt.
This was the most recent death in the [name_m]Jones[/name_m] family, the one before happening twelve years ago. As [name_f]Amy[/name_f] had only turned thirteen in [name_u]November[/name_u], she had no memory of the long nights of silence in the household (unless you counted a toddler’s cries) and did not remember how so many candles were burned that the house smelled of smoke and vanilla for weeks. This time, she did. The week following a family member’s death was always the worst, but the anniversary was something [name_f]Amy[/name_f] had thought would be easier.
Were people avoiding her? She didn’t see why that would be the case, at least, not today. Yesterday, when she was caked with mud, she understood why people might not want to sit near her. Today, however, [name_f]Melody[/name_f] was squeaky clean.
“Should the witch of Aridare ever escape her cage, the city will cease to exist, and the Guardians shall be erased alongside the entirety of Eldina,” [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] read, frowning. “All that because of one witch? Jesus.”
“Oscar, it’s the most powerful witch in the country,” [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] reminded him.
Her cousin merely lifted the book closer to his face, and [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] watched as his frown deepened. “That’s odd.”
“What is it?”
“That sentence I just read. It’s not typed. It’s handwritten.”
She wasn’t completely telling the truth about her ankle. It didn’t sting like a burning spur digging into her leg like it had when she broke it, when the man she’d been fighting knocked her to the ground and stomped on it, but was still sore, and didn’t move quite like it used to as she stumbled stepping away from Raoul’s strike.
Slowly, I inhaled, letting the cool air fill my lungs. There, that was better. As oxygenated blood pumped to my brain, I unfurled my clenched fists, massaging my sore palms. I shook out my feet, loosened my arms, and pulled out my braid, letting my hair fall to my shoulders.
She shook her head at him. “Why would that one line be handwritten? Oh, is Eldina a real place and someone wants to get a message to us about it?” [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] laughed. “Grow up, [name_m]Oscar[/name_m], magic’s not real.”
[name_m]Oscar[/name_m] sighed. “I think it might be.”
“You haven’t the slightest idea,” replied the strange young man, as he sunk onto the bed that once belonged to the spineless [name_m]Hubert[/name_m]. “Ah… now I can finally remove these pinching boots or mine. [name_f]My[/name_f] feet are killing me.”
[name_u]Liam[/name_u] gave an exaggerated groan and pinched Avalon’s arm hard. “This is serious, [name_f]Ava[/name_f]. Don’t joke about this.”
“Yeah, yeah, I get it. Our lives are on the line and all that rubbish.”
