I’ve written on these very forums at length about my love for and queries about one of the single-most unique and delightful names I know: dear Vision. She’s had quite a busy few months past here on the forums, and I am honored to contribute to such a conversation!
Today, I have a new exploration of my beloved Vision. I have taken it upon myself to—using the SSA’s data from 1880 to 2022 as my referent—map this name’s historical use over 142 years! Well, actually, it’s technically much less than that, as Vision has not been in use for much time at all. But, I did comb through all 142 years to find that out!
Here are my findings:
Vision has been used as a name for 23 total years. The earliest documented birth of a baby named Vision was in the year 2000, when 5 baby girls and 0 baby boys were given the name. According to the SSA, 66 baby girls (ages newborn to 23) in the US have been named Vision, as have 45 baby boys (ages newborn to 6 years). That’s 111 total babies named Vision!

[2020] 10 girls, 11 boys

[2022] 6 girls, 10 boys
And here are my personal observations:
It’s interesting to note that, until 2017, Vision was only used as a girls name in the US. After 2015, the character Vision in Marvel’s MCU was introduced, and the name swerved to be used for boys. Between the release of Marvel’s Endgame and WandaVision in 2019 and 2021, Vision had its best year (2020) as a name yet—with a total of 21 births. As well, post-WandaVision, Vision reasonably had his best year as a boys name. In recent years, it has primarily been a boys name, though girls named Vision have come back. I am excited to see where Vision lands in years to come!
I hope I’ll make Obscurity Corner into a mini-series, but for today, I’ll stick to one deep-dive into one very exciting name to me. Thanks for reading and enjoying Vision with me!
