I’ve been thinking lately about how nameberry trends changed over the years. The whole nameberry picks my top 10 thing has made me realize just how much nameberry style has changed over the course of the over 6 (!!!) years I’ve been a member.
Some names that I used to see all the time as suggestions and in signatures…
the literature trend:
[name_u]Story[/name_u]
[name_u]Poet[/name_u]
[name_u]Fable[/name_u]
[name_f]Sonnet[/name_f]
I swear every other signature had [name_u]Story[/name_u] in it!
Other old favorites I don’t see much anymore:
[name_f]Imogen[/name_f]
[name_f]Saskia[/name_f]
[name_f]Sunniva[/name_f]
[name_f]Isadora[/name_f]
[name_f]Coralie[/name_f]
[name_f]Elowen[/name_f] (It’s still commonly seen but not as much as it used to be)
[name_f]Esme[/name_f]
Cordelia
[name_f]Leonie[/name_f]
[name_f]Aurelia[/name_f]
[name_u]Wren[/name_u] of course, and also [name_u]Lark[/name_u]
[name_u]Winter[/name_u] and [name_u]Snow[/name_u]
I can’t think of as many noticeable ones for boys but I thought of is [name_m]Dashiell[/name_m], Gideon, and also Grey/Gray as a middle
For you berries who have been around for a long time, what names can you think of that used to be everywhere on nameberry but don’t get much attention anymore?
Also in a few years, what names will we look back and say “hey remember in 2021 when nameberry was obsessed with [name_f]Marigold[/name_f], [name_f]Primrose[/name_f], and [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]?” (No hate, those are 3 of my top names ) What other names do you think are trending on NB now?
Caspian was a big favourite, as well as [name_m]Atticus[/name_m], [name_u]Peregrine[/name_u] and [name_u]Fox[/name_u] & [name_u]Wolf[/name_u] as middle names!
[name_f]Persephone[/name_f] for girls, [name_f]Freya[/name_f] was also super popular as was [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]. [name_f]Eulalie[/name_f] & [name_f]Ophelie[/name_f] as well.
I think atm [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] is super trendy, [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] is fairly popular, [name_f]Maple[/name_f] is also getting some love.
How could I forget the [name_u]Wolf[/name_u], [name_u]Fox[/name_u], [name_m]Bear[/name_m] trend! I even had [name_u]Wolf[/name_u] in my signature at one point too! (I’ll be honest I still think Asa Bellamy Wolf is gorgeous)
Other ones I just remembered and rarely see on here anymore are [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] and [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] - these were everywhere.
[name_u]Hero[/name_u], [name_u]Echo[/name_u], [name_f]Lenore[/name_f], [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] (b) were quite popular too.
I joined almost a year ago now, and I think at that point the obsession with [name_u]Laurence[/name_u], [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] and [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] was at its peak! I also remember a lot of talk about [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] and [name_m]Oscar[/name_m]. [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and [name_f]Calliope[/name_f] were very popular for girls.
Right now, everyone seems to be in love with [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] and [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], though I think those have been popular on nameberry for awhile. (Also [name_m]Linus[/name_m], which I love!)
I feel like every single NB Chooses [name_f]My[/name_f] Top 10 list had [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], [name_m]Caspian[/name_m], [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], and [name_f]Flora[/name_f]!
I realize my last post was a bit wordy, so here’s a summary!
A year ago:
[name_u]Laurence[/name_u]
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m]
[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m]
[name_m]Oscar[/name_m]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Calliope[/name_f]
I joined in 2018, and I remember a lot of [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] and [name_f]Margot[/name_f] (and other spellings) love. They’re still pretty popular, but definitely not as much as they were then. I think, looking back to 2021, the favorites will be [name_u]Kit[/name_u] and [name_u]Bellamy[/name_u]. There are lots of other current favorites, but those are two I have seen the most of lately.
Imogen, YES. I remember when [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] was all over the place and I felt weird because it seemed like I was the only one who didn’t like it . I also remember when [name_f]Elowen[/name_f], [name_f]Coralie[/name_f], [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] were really popular and [name_u]Lark[/name_u] was used almost as often as [name_u]Wren[/name_u].
Others I remember being popular/even more popular than now-
Soleil, omg, I totally forgot about that! It was a
middle in everyone’s combos! I strongly agree about [name_f]Calista[/name_f], [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f], seraphina, [name_u]Atlas[/name_u], [name_m]Atticus[/name_m], and [name_m]Felix[/name_m] too!
In my early years on NB (2013-2015), I remember feeling really influenced by simple, vintage names.
Arthur, [name_u]Jasper[/name_u], [name_u]George[/name_u], [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], [name_f]Flora[/name_f], [name_f]Mabel[/name_f], [name_f]Iris[/name_f], and [name_f]Alice[/name_f] come to mind.
I’ve definitely seen more diversity form on the forums. In 2015, I would not have felt as comfortable having the names I have in my UC now in my signature because I would’ve expected people to make comments about hating unisex names tor girls.
[name_m]Man[/name_m] I remember that even though I joined last [name_u]June[/name_u]. That’s why I didn’t even have a user card until maybe 2 or 3 months after I had made an account, especially after I saw a post saying how [name_u]Dean[/name_u] was horrible for a girl in any spot. We’ve progressed since then
People in general have gotten a lot nicer and both mods and members are better at shutting down comments like “trashy” “stripper name” and other rude things like that. Nameberry used to be very closed minded, and looking back at old lists I had almost every one of the old favorites on it at some point because it was such an echo chamber of the same opinions. I came onto nb with more “trendy” names and was quickly made aware that they were “horrible”
I’ve been going through all past birth announcements for a project and people used to even insult names or make negative comments in birth announcements, when the child had already been named
Same! And the fun thing is that I’ve found myself gravitating back towards that style. I like some vintage names for other people but I just don’t see my kid having a vintage name.
