What are some names that you absolutely adore but will never use because they’ve become too popular? I recently abandoned my two favorite girl’s name ([name]Miranda[/name] and [name]Matilda[/name]) because of their rising popularity. Other names I love have been popular for pretty much forever, and are therefore unlikely to ever go out of style (like [name]Luke[/name]). [name]How[/name] about you: what names that you love are off your lists due to overuse?
Ditto to [name]Ava[/name], also my nieces name.
[name]Olivia[/name] - I love this name so much.
[name]Mia[/name] - My 5 year old daughters name. Although I haven’t met too many [name]Mia[/name]'s her age yet
[name]Emma[/name]/[name]Emily[/name] - I’ve always thought these were pretty names.
[name]Ella[/name]
[name]Isabella[/name]
A lot of the boys names I love are pretty popular and I have no problem using them regardless.
Girls names I prefer to be less common but as you can see I have a [name]Mia[/name] (#32 when I named her).
…except I’m only 15, so I’m not exactly concerned about popularity yet. Quiet a few kids my age have these names though so it’ll be interesting to see what names are popular when I’m old enough to have kids
Girls
[name]Ava[/name]
[name]Caitlin[/name], I know, so embarrassing! [name]Love[/name] this spelling only.
[name]Hannah[/name]
[name]Isabel[/name]
[name]Katherine[/name]
[name]Olivia[/name]
[name]Rachel[/name]
[name]Sophia[/name]
Boys
[name]Alexander[/name]
[name]Andrew[/name]
[name]Daniel[/name]
[name]Henry[/name]
[name]Jacob[/name]
[name]Michael[/name]
[name]Nicholas[/name]
[name]Owen[/name]
[name]Stephen[/name] - got overused a long time ago
Yes, [name]Matthew[/name]! In my generation I went to school with about 20 [name]Matthews[/name]! It’s my fiance’s name, and it was always a quest to find something more unique to call him as a nickname. I call him [name]Mattie[/name], but his friends sometimes call him Matthewmas, as a joke, or even Mattix, which I really like.
I also adore [name]Sophie[/name]/[name]Sophia[/name]. A beautiful name with a beautiful meaning. Maybe if it wanes a little in popularity it can become the next mn trend, like [name]Rose[/name] or [name]Grace[/name].
[name]Isobel[/name] (although this spelling isn’t common but [name]Isabelle[/name]/[name]Isabel[/name] is SUPER common)
[name]Lily[/name] (my absolute favourite, I’m still going to use [name]Lilliana[/name] or [name]Lillian[/name])
These are the two that I would/may still use, although I love/like a lot of the really popular girls names right now… [name]Ava[/name], [name]Hannah[/name], [name]Leah[/name], [name]Mia[/name], [name]Sophie[/name], [name]Chloe[/name] etc. So sad.
I’m not sure it counts, but I really love the name [name]Lewis[/name] but it’s SUPER popular in [name]England[/name] where I intend to live…
I also really love [name]Maxwell[/name], [name]Luca[/name], [name]Milo[/name], [name]Primrose[/name], [name]Sasha[/name], [name]Constance[/name] and [name]India[/name] but they’re all too popular or will be very popular before long (in [name]England[/name])…
I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Primrose[/name]! [name]Constance[/name] and [name]Milo[/name] are fabulous too. Yes, location does make a difference. And who knows where a child may eventually live when they grow up? That makes it even more complicated, to take into account name popularity in other places. For example, in the US, the name [name]Aoife[/name] (EE-fa) would be really unique, but I knew 3 or 4 when I lived in [name]Ireland[/name].
Why is [name]Caitlin[/name] embarassing? I think it’s a nice enough name.
Girls
[name]Hannah[/name]
[name]Anna[/name] (still might consider using this one)
[name]Avery[/name]
[name]Alexandra[/name]/[name]Alexa[/name]/[name]Alexis[/name]/[name]Alexia[/name] etc.
[name]Olivia[/name], [name]Sophia[/name], [name]Audrey[/name], [name]Madeleine[/name] (but I hate [name]Maddy[/name]), [name]Lily[/name], [name]Isabelle[/name], [name]Charlotte[/name] (it’s on my list anyways), [name]Grace[/name], [name]Zoey[/name], [name]Amelia[/name]
[name]Noah[/name], [name]Owen[/name], [name]Gabriel[/name], [name]Caleb[/name], [name]Jack[/name], [name]Lucas[/name], [name]Henry[/name], [name]Eli[/name], [name]Oliver[/name], [name]William[/name]/[name]Liam[/name]… a lot of these are on my list anyway. For some reason, being popular doesn’t bother me as much with a boys name and it does with a girls name.
I am curious as to why [name]Matilda[/name] is on so many overused lists. Last year (2008) it was ranked mid-800s. I think that the name may recieve a lot of buzz here, but I wouldn’t say overused. I have only met one [name]Matilda[/name] in my lifetime (my niece). Maybe the posters are from the UK or Australia/NZ??
It’s true that [name]Matilda[/name] isn’t super popular - yet. But I bet it will be in the next few years, due to [name]Heath[/name] Ledger/[name]Michelle[/name] [name]Williams[/name]’ daughter, and because classic names are in. I still may consider it. I always loved the idea of having two daughters named [name]Miranda[/name] and [name]Matilda[/name]. Only problem is, I call my fiance [name]Mattie[/name], so [name]Matilda[/name] could never go by that, it would be confusing. But I love [name]Tilly[/name] or [name]Tilda[/name] as nicknames.
