It’s 1844.
[name_u]William[/name_u] [name_m]Dickinson[/name_m], now 26, has thrown himself into the family farm. He has also become engaged to [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] [name_u]Larkin[/name_u], the middle class daughter of a local doctor. Their engagement took some convincing but Abigail’s father eventually came around when he saw that, although from a poor family, [name_u]William[/name_u] and his farm now seem to be thriving. [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_m]Dickinson[/name_m], the eldest daughter, married [name_u]George[/name_u] Tugwell, a joiner, and gave birth to two children, [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] and [name_f]Hannah[/name_f]. Second daughter [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] [name_m]Dickinson[/name_m] took on the running of the farmhouse after her sister [name_f]Mary[/name_f] left to become married. However, she became sick with scarlet fever after she caught it from her niece and nephew. Whilst most of the family were left relatively healthy, unfortunately, there was a family tragedy. [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] [name_m]Dickinson[/name_m], the second born son, died from consumption at the age of 24.

-DD nb (1844-): [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]

[name_u]Joseph[/name_u] has fallen in love! He met [name_f]Charity[/name_f] after she tripped over and graciously helped her up. [name_f]Charity[/name_f] comes from a rich family, and knew her family wouldn’t approve of her wedding a working class gentleman. They kept their relationship secret, until [name_f]Charity[/name_f] became pregnant with Joseph’s baby! Unfortunately, Charity’s family were not at all pleased. Her father kicked her out of the house and shunned her from the family. Feeling guilty, Charity’s mother gave her a large sum of money to start a new life. [name_f]Charity[/name_f] moved in with [name_u]Joseph[/name_u] (still a farmhand), and they upgraded the farm and now live in a beautiful house on said farm! Soon after, a baby girl was born: sweet [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], to be nicknamed [name_f]Clemma[/name_f] (though [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] is determined to call her Lemon). Being the first baby in the family, everyone is enamoured with her.

DF, 29 (1815-): [name_f]Almira[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]
[name_u]Charlie[/name_u] has fallen in love with an older middle-class lady, [name_f]Almira[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]. Though [name_u]Joseph[/name_u] doesn’t approve of [name_f]Almira[/name_f] (he thinks she is a very rude lady), they are set to get married summer. [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] has taken up a trade: carpentry. He has acquired enough money to start building a home for his family, though [name_f]Almira[/name_f] is never satisfied with his ideas. She longs for a regal mansion at best!

DD, 21 (1823-): [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] ‘Mamie’ (sick with pneumonia)
DF, 21 (1823-): [name_u]Benjamin[/name_u] [name_u]John[/name_u] (sick with
[name_f]Mamie[/name_f] is engaged with her childhood sweetheart, and her best friend. It is important to [name_f]Mamie[/name_f] that [name_u]Joseph[/name_u] likes her partner, and [name_u]Joseph[/name_u] adores [name_m]Benji[/name_m]! [name_m]Benji[/name_m] sees him as a mentor. [name_m]Benji[/name_m] comes from a lower middle class background. Mamie’s patient and caring demeanor has lead her to becoming a teacher at the school! The very same school in which [name_f]Mamie[/name_f] and [name_m]Benji[/name_m] fell in love. Unfortunately, [name_f]Mamie[/name_f] has been ill with pneumonia after falling in a creek out on an adventuring lesson with the schoolchildren. Lovers [name_f]Mamie[/name_f] and [name_m]Benji[/name_m] were further separated when [name_m]Benji[/name_m] contracted consumption at a baseball game! So much for team spirit. Luckily, both of their healths are improving and should survive.

DD, 17 (1827-): [name_f]Olive[/name_f] [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] (sick with typhoid fever)
DD, 14 (1830-): [name_u]Rose[/name_u] [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f] ‘Rosie’
[name_f]Olive[/name_f] and [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] are living with [name_u]Joseph[/name_u], [name_f]Charity[/name_f] and [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] in the family’s lovely townhouse; they both adore [name_f]Charity[/name_f] and [name_f]Charity[/name_f] adores them, even seeing them as daughters or sisters. [name_f]Olive[/name_f] does dream to move to the city, away from the farm, and start a bustling business when she is of age. Unfortunately, she has contracted a mild case of typhoid fever and is on bed rest for the next weeks. [name_f]Olive[/name_f] and [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] are not fans of [name_f]Almira[/name_f], and [name_f]Almira[/name_f] positively despises them and [name_f]Charity[/name_f]!

DS1 (26, silversmith): William “Will” Henry Marshall
DW (21, daughter of the Governor of Illinois, ill with whooping cough): Lucy Caroline Russell Marshall
Will has built up a thriving silversmith business in the last few years, after handing over the farm to his younger brother Cal. Will was introduced to his wife, Lucy, by his elder sister Meg - Meg’s husband being a friend and business parter of Lucy’s father, the governor. Now, governors’ daughters don’t usually marry silversmiths but as Lucy is her father’s only child, he was eventually persuaded to allow the marriage. Since the marriage, Will’s silversmithing business has increased tenfold as his in-laws send their friends and relatives his way. Lucy’s current bought with whooping cough is the first dark cloud in their sunny life.

DD1 (24): Margaret “Meg”” Jane Marshall Harris
DH (34, railroad tycoon): Joseph Stephen Harris
—DD (2): Margaret “Posey” Josephine Harris
—DD (newborn, ill with diptheria): Elizabeth “Lillie” Sarah Harris
When Joseph Stephen Harris, a self-made man who had come up from nothing and one of the largest railroad tycoons in the country, came into Peoria to personally open a new station, everyone from miles around flocked to see him - and bring their single daughters. Joseph saw Meg in the crowd and, after the ceremony, came over to introduce himself. He was immediately charmed and proposed within two hours of meeting her - Meg made him wait for two weeks before accepting his proposal. Despite the speed of the courtship, they are devoted to one another and their daughters. The Harrises have since settled in Springfield, but travel often to Peoria to visit her family - by Joseph’s personal railcar, of course.

DS2 (21, farmer, has a broken leg from being kicked by a cow): Calvin “Cal” Edward Marshall
DW (20, daughter of local general store owner): Laura Jane King Marshall
—DS (1, ill with consumption): Robert Calvin Marshall
In an agreement with his older brother, Cal took over the farm while Will focused on his silversmithing business. Once the farm was profitable, Cal was able to marry his childhood sweetheart, Laura, the daughter of the local general store owner. While happy, their life is certainly hard - Cal recently broke his leg when he was kicked by a cow, leaving Laura to manage the farm with the farmhands and his younger brother as best as possible. Their young son Robert’s illness has also taken a toll on their lives.
