Please help us name our triplets!

[name]Hi[/name] berries! First time posting here and thank God I found nameberrry. My husband, [name]Ben[/name], and I are expecting triplets! We’re so overwhelmed not only with the idea of having three babies, but with having to name them too. We really need your help!

We have a 2 and 1/2 year old daughter named [name]Gwendolen[/name]. We usually call her [name]Gwen[/name] or [name]Gwennie[/name]. I fell in love with her name the first time I read the Importance of Being [name]Earnest[/name]. It took me a while to convince [name]Ben[/name] to name her [name]Gwendolen[/name], but he finally gave in because he likes that her name has a literary connection.”

We love [name]Gwen[/name]'s name, and it fits her perfectly, but I have to say we’re not really sure what style it is or what names will go well with it. We’re not overly concerned with the names matching, but we would like them to go relatively well together.”

So, what names would you pair with [name]Gwendolen[/name]? I know I’m not providing much information about the type of names we want - but we really don’t know. I want to start by seeing what you would pair with [name]Gwendolen[/name] and then work from there. We would love a literary connection, but it is not necessary.”

Thanks,
[name]Julia[/name]

Congratulations! You are going to need a lot of names! First place to start I thought was names with strong literary connections. Since [name]Gwendolen[/name] is lush, vintage and feminine I tried to find names that go with that style first. I’ll start with girls names:

[name]Amaryllis[/name]
[name]Antonia[/name]
[name]Arabella[/name]
[name]Augusta[/name]
[name]Aurora[/name]
[name]Briony[/name]
[name]Cecily[/name]
[name]Clarissa[/name]
[name]Cordelia[/name]
[name]Cressida[/name]
[name]Dahlia[/name]
[name]Domenica[/name]
[name]Eleanor[/name]/[name]Elinor[/name]
[name]Eliza[/name]
[name]Esme[/name]
[name]Evangeline[/name]
[name]Harriet[/name]
[name]Helena[/name]
[name]Honora[/name]
[name]Isadora[/name]
[name]Isolde[/name]
[name]Lavinia[/name]
[name]Louisa[/name]
[name]Margaret[/name]
[name]Mariann[/name]
[name]Phoebe[/name]
[name]Portia[/name]
[name]Rosamunde[/name]
[name]Tamsin[/name]
[name]Ondine[/name]
[name]Orinthia[/name]
[name]Ursula[/name]
[name]Zenobia[/name]

[name]Gwendolen[/name] is lovely! I’d choose other vintage names for her siblings, and in particular girls would be undeniably feminine, but not frilly ([name]Penelope[/name] instead of [name]Clarissa[/name], if you see what I mean).

Girls:
[name]Alice[/name] (in Wonderland, but beware that this is extremely popular in the UK)
[name]Beatrix[/name] ([name]Potter[/name], or [name]Beatrice[/name] from Much [name]Ado[/name] About Nothing and giving a [name]Dante[/name] connection)
[name]Charlotte[/name] ([name]Bronte[/name])
[name]Cosima[/name]
[name]Eloise[/name]
[name]Evangeline/name
[name]Flora[/name]/[name]Florence[/name]
[name]Harriet[/name]
[name]Isolde[/name]
[name]Julia[/name]/[name]Juliet[/name] (of ‘[name]Romeo[/name] and …’ fame)
[name]Louise[/name]/a ([name]May[/name] [name]Alcott[/name])
[name]Lydia[/name] (but [name]Gwendolen[/name] and [name]Lydia[/name] are rivals, so to speak, for one man’s love in [name]George[/name] [name]Eliot[/name]'s ‘[name]Daniel[/name] Deronda’)
[name]Magnolia[/name]
[name]Matilda[/name] ([name]Roald[/name] Dahl)
[name]Mirabel/name
[name]Penelope[/name]
[name]Rosanna[/name]/[name]Rosetta[/name]
[name]Salome[/name] ([name]SAL[/name]-oh-may)
[name]Susannah[/name]
[name]Sylvia[/name] (Plath and Two Gentlemen of [name]Verona[/name])
[name]Tallulah[/name] (normally this would be the ultimate frilly name to me, but for some reason she just feels good with [name]Gwendolen[/name])
[name]Violet[/name]
[name]Zelda[/name].

Boys:
[name]Arthur[/name] (I always think [name]Conan[/name] [name]Doyle[/name], but many others besides)
[name]Atticus[/name] (To Kill A Mockingbird)
[name]Edmund[/name] (or indeed [name]Peter[/name], both Pevensie boys)
[name]Freddie[/name] (as a nickname for [name]Frederick[/name], [name]Alfred[/name] or [name]Wilfred[/name] - the latter gives you an [name]Owen[/name] connection)
[name]Hugo[/name] (Victor____)
[name]Lewis[/name] ([name]Carroll[/name])
[name]Nathaniel[/name]
[name]Robert[/name] ([name]Frost[/name], Browning, [name]Burns[/name] and many others)
[name]Rupert[/name] ([name]Brooke[/name], although depending on your personal views, his poetry might put you off)
[name]Seamus[/name] (Heaney - perhaps you could go for a British Isles theme with [name]Gwendolen[/name])
[name]Theodore[/name]
[name]Ulysses[/name] (mythology, and the [name]James[/name] [name]Joyce[/name] novel)
[name]Walter[/name] ([name]Walt[/name] [name]Whitman[/name]).

[name]Do[/name] any of these take your fancy?

Good luck! [name]Auburn[/name]

[name]Just[/name] going on [name]Gwendolen[/name] and literary connections-

[name]Georgiana[/name] (Pride and Prejudice)
[name]Agatha[/name] (Wodehouse’s Jeeves novels… then again, maybe not)
[name]Cordelia[/name] ([name]King[/name] Lear)
[name]Beatrix[/name] ([name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Potter[/name]? Or [name]Beatrice[/name] from Much [name]Ado[/name] About Nothing and The Divine Comedy)
[name]Estella[/name] (Great Expections. Also- [name]Phillip[/name] nn [name]Pip[/name])
[name]Arabella[/name]
[name]Aurora[/name] (Not very literary unless you count Sleeping Beauty, but she’s a [name]Roman[/name] goddess and reminds me of the aurora borealis which is a nice association)
[name]Evangeline[/name] ([name]Longfellow[/name] poem)
[name]Amelia[/name]
[name]Esther[/name] and [name]Honoria[/name] (Bleak House)
[name]Felicity[/name]
[name]Isolde[/name] (Idylls of the [name]King[/name], legend of [name]Tristan[/name] and [name]Isolde[/name])
[name]Eleanora[/name] (a [name]Poe[/name] story, but she dies so maybe not (other [name]Poe[/name] women-[name]Eulalie[/name], [name]Annabel[/name] [name]Lee[/name], [name]Rowena[/name]))
[name]Elinor[/name] (Sense and Sensibility)
[name]Imogen[/name] ([name]Cymbeline[/name])
[name]Rosalie[/name]
[name]Penelope[/name] (Persuasion)

[name]Henry[/name] ([name]Henry[/name] [name]David[/name] [name]Thoreau[/name], [name]Henry[/name] Wadsworth [name]Longfellow[/name], and so on)
[name]Julian[/name]
[name]Laurence[/name] (I always loved [name]Laurie[/name] from [name]Little[/name] Women… there are a lot of other great names in that book too, by the way)
[name]Oliver[/name] ([name]Oliver[/name] Twist)
[name]Felix[/name]
[name]Bertram[/name] (Jeeves. You might try finding a list of Wodehouse characters and see if any strike your fancy. [name]Honoria[/name], [name]Florence[/name], [name]Hermione[/name], [name]Percy[/name], [name]Orlo[/name], [name]Dahlia[/name], [name]Reginald[/name], [name]Heloise[/name], [name]Cornelius[/name], [name]Audrey[/name]…)
[name]Harrison[/name]
[name]Jasper[/name]
[name]Hugo[/name] ([name]Victor[/name] [name]Hugo[/name])
[name]Maxwell[/name]
[name]Gareth[/name] (Idylls of the [name]King[/name], [name]King[/name] [name]Arthur[/name] legend)
[name]Silas[/name]
[name]Sebastian[/name] (Several [name]Shakespeare[/name] plays and Brideshead Revisited)
[name]Everett[/name]
[name]Edmund[/name]

“[name]Lydia[/name] (but [name]Gwendolen[/name] and [name]Lydia[/name] are rivals, so to speak, for one man’s love in [name]George[/name] [name]Eliot[/name]'s ‘[name]Daniel[/name] Deronda’)”

I actually think it’s [name]Mira[/name] and [name]Gwendolen[/name] who are rivals–is there a really [name]Lydia[/name] in [name]Daniel[/name] Deronda?

I’m not sure if you want other long names to go with [name]Gwendolen[/name], but I thought of [name]Dorothea[/name], another [name]Eliot[/name] heroine (from Middlemarch, if that’s not too themey for you. (She is sister to [name]Celia[/name]).
A couple of others:
[name]Rosalind[/name] ([name]Shakespeare[/name])
[name]Flora[/name] or [name]Florence[/name]
[name]Georgiana[/name] ([name]Austen[/name])
[name]Philippa[/name]
[name]Mabel[/name]
[name]Lucinda[/name]
[name]Josephine[/name] ([name]Alcott[/name])
[name]Rosemary[/name]

Hmm, those are maybe a bit random (and some don’t have literary antecedents that I can think of), but like [name]Gwendolen[/name], they all have strong consonant sounds.

Good luck!

First off, I have to say how jealous I am. I’ve always loved the idea of a multiple birth but it hasn’t happened for us. I like the idea of older names that complement [name]Gwendolen[/name], but I don’t really have any specific suggestions. The one suggestion I do have is to not give them alliterative names, as in all starting with the same letter. I’ve known a lot of twins and it’s always seemed to me that that takes away some of their individuality. I never had a problem telling [name]Shellie[/name] and [name]Katrina[/name] [name]Davis[/name] apart, but nobody could ever tell [name]Jamie[/name] and [name]Jimmy[/name] [name]Parker[/name] apart.

Congratulations on expecting.

[name]Lucinda[/name]- One of the dolls in a [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Potter[/name] story “A Tale of Two Bad Mice”
[name]Jane[/name]- The name of the other doll. Also think [name]Austin[/name], or my favorite [name]Jane[/name] Eyre

Congrats on your triplets. Here are some suggestions on [name]Gwendolen[/name]'s siblings. Of course, the names you choose depend on your surname and if they flow together. All the best!

Yup, she’s Grandcourt’s mistress - the one who’s jewels he forces [name]Gwendolen[/name] to wear. Not a very pleasant guy, huh?

I totally love a lot of the other poster’s suggestions - just throwing another vote out there for [name]Dorothea[/name] (or [name]Dorothy[/name]).

Oh, and speaking of [name]Little[/name] Women names, how about [name]Josephine[/name]? It’s just lovely, and so much nickname possibility!

[name]Auburn[/name]

Some similar names to the Welsh [name]Gwendolen[/name];

[name]Fiona[/name]
[name]Margaret[/name]/[name]Marguerite[/name]
[name]Vivien[/name]
[name]Isolde[/name]
[name]Maeve[/name]
[name]Beatrice[/name]
[name]Freya[/name]
[name]Bridget[/name]
[name]Roselyn[/name]
[name]Winifred[/name]
[name]Evelyn[/name]
[name]Ariadne[/name]

Boys
[name]Bran[/name]
[name]Connor[/name]
[name]Ian[/name]
[name]Gavin[/name]
[name]Holden[/name]
[name]Sean[/name]

Thanks for the fabulous suggestions! So many beautiful names to consider.”

[name]Penelope[/name] - I love the fact that we could use the nickname [name]Nellie[/name]! One concern though - it sounds somewhat similar to [name]Gwendolen[/name]. [name]Pen[/name] and [name]Gwen[/name] rhyme, and while we’d call her [name]Nellie[/name] I know she’d get called [name]Pen[/name] or [name]Penny[/name] occasionally. Are they too similar? Also, there’s not a literary connection, or at least not one I’m thinking of. It’s not a deal breaker though. ”
> We would also consider [name]Elinor[/name] (loved Sense and Sensibility!) and [name]Helena[/name]. They would both give us the nn [name]Nellie[/name], but I think [name]Penelope[/name] might be a better match for [name]Gwendolen[/name]. ”

[name]Briony[/name]- I love the literary connection. Atonement is a great book, even if [name]Briony[/name] is a rather mischievous character. A drawback is the lack of a nickname. [name]True[/name], we could call her [name]Bri[/name], but that seems insubstantial. Are there any others that I’m missing? I guess B could work.”

[name]Beatrice[/name] - [name]Love[/name] the [name]Shakespeare[/name] connection, but I’m not sure it’s really the same style as [name]Gwendolen[/name]. Thoughts?”

[name]Eloise[/name] - [name]Gwennie[/name] and I love those books! She would be thrilled if she had a little sister named [name]Eloise[/name]. But I’m afraid that she’ll be lost in a see of Elles.”

[name]Louisa[/name] - [name]Love[/name] the [name]Louisa[/name] [name]May[/name] [name]Alcott[/name] reference! Again, nicknames are an issue. I don’t want to call her [name]Lou[/name], but [name]Lulu[/name] is kind of hard to say and I know we’d revert to calling her [name]Lou[/name]. Any other nicknames I’m not thinking of?”

[name]Harriet[/name] - [name]Love[/name] the nn [name]Hattie[/name]! Not sure we love the full name though.

[name]Aurora[/name] - I love the nn [name]Rory[/name]! It isn’t the easiest name in the world to say, though. I may have to test it out on [name]Gwennie[/name]. [name]Do[/name] [name]Gwendolen[/name] and [name]Aurora[/name] go well together?

[name]Phoebe[/name]- My husband loves this name so much. The Catcher in the [name]Rye[/name] connection is fabulous. ”[name]Do[/name] you think it goes with [name]Gwendolen[/name]?”

[name]Alice[/name] - [name]Love[/name] this name, and [name]Alice[/name] in Wonderland is such a great literary connection. The popularity is a concern though.

[name]Jane[/name] - So many lit connections! [name]Austen[/name]! Eyre! [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Potter[/name]! But does it go with [name]Gwendolen[/name]?

Other names we’re considering:
[name]Matilda[/name] -”
[name]Susannah[/name] -
[name]Fiona[/name] - ”
[name]Rosalind[/name] -”
[name]Philippa[/name] - [name]Pippa[/name]!”
[name]Rowena[/name] -”
[name]Vivian[/name]-

This post is already ridiculously long, so I’ll do the boys later. We’d love your feedback on the names and our questions. [name]Feel[/name] free to suggest more names, even ones mentioned, that we might have missed or that you think go well with [name]Gwendolen[/name]. We’re still a ways away from picking the three, but we just want to know which names go well with [name]Gwendolen[/name] and which ones don’t. Ideally, we’d like to have a list of at least 6 names for each gender that we can then pick from.”

Anyway, sorry again for the length. I have a tendency to ramble! Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.”
Thanks,”
[name]Julia[/name]

[name]Hi[/name] [name]Julia[/name],

I just wanted to mention that [name]Penelope[/name] is [name]Odysseus[/name]'s wife in the Odyssey, so there’s a lit connection!

You have some really great choices, and I don’t know what more I could add. I especially love [name]Phoebe[/name] with [name]Gwendolen[/name] (and there’s also a [name]Phoebe[/name] in As You Like It, for what it’s worth).

[name]Auburn[/name], thanks for clarifying about the [name]Lydia[/name]-[name]Gwendolen[/name]-Grandcourt connection!

 (Sorry if that seems inappropriate. My daughter really wanted to me to put that down.)

Best of luck!

Girls:

[name]Isolde[/name]
[name]Eleanor[/name]
[name]Charlotte[/name]
[name]Anne[/name]
[name]Josephine[/name]
[name]Mabel[/name]
[name]Lilian[/name]
[name]Irene[/name]
[name]Amelia[/name]
[name]Lydia[/name]
[name]Celia[/name]
[name]Coraline[/name]
[name]Iris[/name]
[name]Lavinia[/name]
[name]Frances[/name]
[name]Cecilia[/name]
[name]Claire[/name]
[name]Helena[/name]
[name]Sybil[/name]

Boys:

[name]Andrew[/name]
[name]Arthur[/name]
[name]Benjamin[/name]
[name]Charles[/name]
[name]Henry[/name]
[name]Edward[/name]
[name]Oscar[/name]
[name]Victor[/name]
[name]Frederick[/name]
[name]Warren[/name]
[name]Ernest[/name]
[name]Marvin[/name]

[name]Hilary[/name]-
That’s okay; I love the face. It’s something my daughter would do too.
I completely forgot about [name]Penelope[/name] in the Odyssey! Thanks for the reminder - it makes us like the name even more.

Aphroditeiris-
Thanks for the suggestions!

[name]Julia[/name] I would love to see you honoured when naming the children. [name]Julia[/name] is a great name as is [name]Juliet[/name].

So, can we have a [name]Juliet[/name]? Ones in bold are my faves.

[name]Juliet[/name] [name]Arianne[/name]
[name]Juliet[/name] [name]Camille[/name]
[name]Camilla[/name] [name]Juliet[/name]
[name]Camilla[/name] [name]Arianne[/name]
[name]Olivia[/name] [name]Camille[/name]
[name]Julia[/name] [name]Imogen[/name]
[name]Odelia[/name] [name]Margot[/name]

[name]Olivia[/name] [name]Juliet[/name]
[name]Sybella[/name] [name]Eloise[/name]
[name]Cecelia[/name] [name]Jane[/name]

For the boys

[name]Oscar[/name] [name]Alexander[/name]
[name]Antony[/name] [name]William[/name]
[name]Dashiell[/name] [name]Henry[/name]

I love [name]Penelope[/name]. The [name]Gwennie[/name] and [name]Penny[/name] rhyme does make me a little hesitant, though. But if you manage to avoid the [name]Penny[/name] nickname and get [name]Nellie[/name] to stick, I think [name]Penelope[/name] is wonderful!

I think [name]Aurora[/name], [name]Phoebe[/name], and [name]Beatrice[/name] go great with [name]Gwendolen[/name]. I love the nickname [name]Rory[/name] too- it gives [name]Aurora[/name] a nice choice between pretty princess and tomboy.

Other [name]Louisa[/name] nicknames- [name]Louie[/name], [name]Lula[/name], [name]Lola[/name]

I love [name]Alice[/name] and [name]Jane[/name], but they feel rather plain next to [name]Gwendolen[/name]. But really, I think it’s more important that the triplets’ names go together with each other than with their big sister’s, so it’s not that big of a deal.

Other girls names I like- [name]Rosalind[/name], [name]Isolde[/name], [name]Josephine[/name], [name]Juniper[/name], [name]Elinor[/name], and [name]Philippa[/name]

Other boys names I like- [name]Dashiell[/name], [name]Simeon[/name], [name]Edmund[/name], [name]Sebastian[/name], [name]Leander[/name], [name]Dominic[/name], [name]Felix[/name], [name]Matthias[/name], [name]Percy[/name], [name]Everett[/name], [name]Lucian[/name]

Thank you both for the suggestions! [name]Love[/name] [name]Dashiell[/name] in particular. We’re still working on our boys list, but it will definitely be on it.”

[name]Rollo[/name]-”
I love the name [name]Juliet[/name], but unfortunately it would just be too confusing to have a [name]Julia[/name] and a [name]Juliet[/name] in the same house. Maybe in the middle though? I love some of your combos! I’ll have to show DH.”

[name]Kai[/name]-
We would call her [name]Nellie[/name] almost 100% of the time, so I don’t think the rhyming would be a problem. I see your point about [name]Alice[/name] and [name]Jane[/name], and think we’re leaning more towards names like [name]Penelope[/name], [name]Aurora[/name], etc.”

Thanks,
[name]Julia[/name]

[name]Hi[/name] [name]Julia[/name]

I agree [name]Juliet[/name]/[name]Julia[/name] would need to be in the middle.

[name]Even[/name] though [name]Olivia[/name] is popular and maybe ruled out for this reason, I wanted to say that it goes really well with [name]Gwendolen[/name], I like it a lot so if it was up to me I would still keep it on my list.

rollo

[name]Helena[/name], [name]Flora[/name] and [name]Miriam[/name] would be nice. I’m out of male suggestions.

There must be a highly contagious Multivirus going around Nameberry. I swear I’ve never seen a name site so full of twins, triplet and quads  I’d like to catch it but I’m done having children
