Popular NB Names You Dislike

I really don’t like the boys names on girls trend that seems to be so popular on NB. I don’t mind truly unisex names (e.g. nature or place names where there’s no reason for them to be gendered either way) but I can’t stand when people start claiming historically masculine names like ‘[name_u]Everett[/name_u]’ or ‘[name_u]Ryan[/name_u]’ are suitable names for girls. I pity the girls that will always get mistaken for a boy at the beginning of a school year, and it also annoys me when those same names start to not be considered suitable for boys any more.

I also don’t get the nickname thing that NB is obsessed with (this might be a US/UK thing). People who claim to like a name but then add in brackets that the nickname would be something totally different… what’s the point? Why not just call the child the name you’re going to call them? I find it weird and quite pretentious. The more tenuous the link, the worse (e.g. I don’t mind [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] for [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] as much as I mind, for example [name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f] nn [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]).

I don’t like when people use ‘yn’ as substitute for ‘on’ or ‘en’. It doesn’t sound the same and it looks ugly. Especially when adding a ‘y’ is supposed to make a masculine-sounding name feminine (Brixtyn, I’m looking at you).

Not a dislike, more an amusement about different styles in the US and UK - I’ve noticed more and more American berries expressing an interest in ‘Celtic’ style boy names that sound to me like they belong to a middle aged man playing darts in the pub ([name_m]Colin[/name_m], [name_m]Ian[/name_m], [name_m]Graham[/name_m], [name_m]Malcolm[/name_m], etc). These names have heavily fallen out of fashion in the UK and I find it hilarious to think of American babies getting called things like this.

Other random names I don’t like for various reasons:
[name_f]Greer[/name_f] (oh so ugly, I cannot understand this at all)
[name_f]Nora[/name_f] (don’t know why, I can see the appeal but it gives me the creeps)
mid 20th century names ending -ine and elle (e.g. [name_f]Pauline[/name_f], [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f], [name_f]Michelle[/name_f])
[name_f]Helen[/name_f], [name_f]Laura[/name_f], [name_f]Jane[/name_f] (boring)

If we’re just talking about names that are popular on Nameberry, well there’s only a few that I can think of that I dislike…

[name_f]Cora[/name_f]/[name_f]Nora[/name_f]/[name_f]Norah[/name_f] - the -or- sound isn’t appealing to me at all.
[name_f]Aurora[/name_f] - for the same reason, but the double R makes the sound even more unpleasant.
[name_f]Rose[/name_f]/[name_f]Grace[/name_f] - some find these ‘refreshing’ when they are in the first spot instead of the middle, but I just find them overused full stop.
[name_f]Adeline[/name_f]/[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] - fine names, but sound like the new [name_u]Addison[/name_u] / [name_f]Addie[/name_f].
[name_m]Graham[/name_m] - total Dad name where I’m from and several generations away from being ready for revival.
[name_m]Atticus[/name_m] - just sounds like Attic or [name_m]Abacus[/name_m], and the literary connection is no longer a positive association.

Anything overly frilly or too full on

  • [name_f]Aurora[/name_f]- just think of the northern lights
  • [name_f]Persephone[/name_f]- reminds me of a musical instrument
  • [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]- Negative connotations, ‘I feel ya’
  • [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]- don’t know why, just don’t like this
  • [name_f]Emily[/name_f]- same as [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Arabella[/name_f]- I think of arachnophobia
  • [name_u]Eloise[/name_u]- wheeze
  • [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f]- same as [name_f]Aurora[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Abigail[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Isabel[/name_f]/ [name_f]Isabella[/name_f]/ [name_f]Bella[/name_f]/ [name_f]Annabell[/name_f]/ Anything bell

I heavily dislike [name_f]Ramona[/name_f], [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] (and all the other variants like [name_f]Fionnuala[/name_f]), [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f], [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f], [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], [name_f]Adeline[/name_f] (I do like [name_f]Adele[/name_f] though), [name_f]Victoria[/name_f], [name_f]Seraphine[/name_f]/[name_f]Seraphina[/name_f], [name_f]Sarah[/name_f], [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] and [name_f]Amalia[/name_f], [name_f]Clara[/name_f], [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] and [name_f]Grace[/name_f].

I really don’t like boy names on girls. Like why use [name_m]Maxwell[/name_m] when there’s [name_f]Maxine[/name_f] or [name_u]Maxime[/name_u]?

Oh my gosh. [name_u]Rylee[/name_u] all the way! What a terrible name!
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], magnolia,[name_m]Ryker[/name_m], [name_u]Piper[/name_u], [name_u]Rylee[/name_u], [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], [name_u]Harper[/name_u], [name_u]Reese[/name_u], [name_m]Dashiell[/name_m]. All these names irritate me for whatever reasons.

[name_u]Juniper[/name_u]
[name_f]Olive[/name_f]
[name_f]Brynn[/name_f] (beautiful name ruined with an extra n)
[name_m]Grayson[/name_m]
[name_m]Jaxson[/name_m]
[name_u]Harper[/name_u]
[name_f]Nora[/name_f]
[name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u]
[name_f]McKayla[/name_f]
[name_f]Amelia[/name_f]

[name_f]LUNA[/name_f]! (sounds like “crazy” “loony” to me)

I really don’t understand the fascination with [name_f]Emma[/name_f]. It’s over used and kind of boring. Same goes for [name_f]Emily[/name_f], [name_f]Sarah[/name_f], [name_f]Laura[/name_f], [name_f]Hannah[/name_f], [name_f]Jane[/name_f].

I have never been a fan of word names or nature names ([name_u]Poet[/name_u], [name_u]Lyric[/name_u], [name_u]Story[/name_u], [name_u]Sage[/name_u], [name_u]River[/name_u], etc). I am also not a fan of any of the [name_u]Aiden[/name_u] derivative names ([name_u]Aiden[/name_u], [name_m]Caden[/name_m], [name_u]Hayden[/name_u], [name_u]Jaden[/name_u], [name_u]Kayden[/name_u], and also [name_u]Payton[/name_u]). Not a fan of invented spellings of anything that adds “lynn” or “leigh/lee” to the end of a perfectly good name for no apparent reason. And there are some dowdy old fashioned names that make me think “that kid either needs to have an amazing personality, a trust fund, or grow up to be incredibly hot to pull that off” ([name_f]Frances[/name_f], [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], [name_m]Reuben[/name_m], [name_u]Arlo[/name_u])

All of which to say I guess I favor more classic names, but that’s just me.

[name_f]Imogen[/name_f] - sounds like an infection, vaccine or immigration policy

[name_u]Harper[/name_u] - she will harp. Annoying nagging teenage “princess”

[name_m]Carver[/name_m] - destined to tradesman, blue-collar status. What’s next: Roofer?

[name_f]Isabella[/name_f] - what if the girl isn’t a [name_f]Bella[/name_f]? That’ll
be awkward.

[name_f]Emma[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f], [name_f]Sophie[/name_f], [name_f]Grace[/name_f]: can you be more boring? Might as well name them: [name_f]Mary[/name_f], [name_f]Jen[/name_f], [name_f]Barbara[/name_f], [name_f]Linda[/name_f]. Additionally, how can you ever take an [name_f]Emma[/name_f], Or [name_f]Ella[/name_f] seriously? These two are nursery names. [name_u]Forever[/name_u] childish.

____-lyn: destined to small town [name_f]Americana[/name_f] mediocracy

Avaya, [name_f]Adara[/name_f], any A_a_a: It seems like the parents are trying to revitalize a phonological pattern seen in [name_f]Amanda[/name_f] (subconsciously) and be creative… But it just sucks.

[name_f]Amelia[/name_f]: reminds me of cornmeal. I find it unappealing to read and without a decent nn (Ameal?, [name_u]Mel[/name_u]?, [name_f]Melia[/name_f]?) ew. [name_f]Emily[/name_f] is awful
too.

  • Anything [name_u]Lyric[/name_u], [name_u]Poet[/name_u], [name_u]Story[/name_u], [name_u]Fable[/name_u], [name_f]Moon[/name_f], Brave, etc.
  • [name_f]Reverie[/name_f] - it’s one of those “not-names” to me, it doesn’t feel like a name, it doesn’t have any substance nor imagery, it’s just sort of “there” (and it reminds me of referee)
  • [name_f]Clover[/name_f], [name_f]Peony[/name_f], [name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f], etc., do not feel like names to me
  • [name_u]Sloane[/name_u] & [name_f]Grier[/name_f] which just have such unattractive sounds to me

A lot of Berries seem to really like the names [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] and [name_f]Olive[/name_f], and I’m like…no thanks.
[name_f]Zelda[/name_f] just reminds me of the video game and I don’t like [name_f]Olive[/name_f] probably because I can’t stand the taste of olives, lol.

I hope I’m one of the coolest Emmas around.
In regards to [name_u]Harper[/name_u] – is it weird that I’m not too thrilled with it on a girl but adore it on a boy? I’ve never met any child named [name_u]Harper[/name_u] at all, which is odd because it’s supposed to be such a popular girls’ name. My area seems to still be awash with Nevaehs. >.< Oh, and little Emmas, but that’s okay because I was here first.

I’m sure you are the coolest Emma

[name_f]Clementine[/name_f]!!! I just don’t get it. Why?

I also don’t like [name_m]Alfred[/name_m], [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], [name_m]Graham[/name_m], [name_m]Edward[/name_m], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Edith[/name_f], [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]… You aren’t naming a 70 year old.

@[name_f]Eryn[/name_f]: but we are naming future 70-year-olds  lol. I really like that style of names, for the most part, even if though I really only like [name_m]Edward[/name_m] of the names you listed as an example. I’m not sure why that style appeals to me, but I do like that they are more substantial than a rather (sorry, no offense to anyone) wishy-washy names like [name_u]Kayden[/name_u] or Brynleigh.

I fully agree about [name_f]Clementine[/name_f], though. I mean, maybe it holds personal meaning to the parents, but it just doesn’t sound appealing…and there is always “Oh my darlin’, oh my darlin’, oh my darlin’ [name_f]Clementine[/name_f]!”.

[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] is the first name that comes to mind. It just sounds so unappealing to me and not feminine at all.

I also dislike [name_f]Margot[/name_f] and [name_u]Sloane[/name_u]. [name_f]Margot[/name_f] just looks like maggot and again doesn’t sound feminine. [name_u]Sloane[/name_u] reminds me of slug and moan, and doesn’t sound feminine either.

I love the [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] video games, but I can’t stand the name [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]. I’ve never found the sound of it attractive, despite how much I enjoy the games.

I thought this was about names that were popular on Nameberry, but everyone seems to be talking about whatever names they dislike.
Oh well, here’s mine…

I don’t get why people like [name_f]Posey[/name_f]. An older child or adult would probably wish she had been named something different.

Also, other names that everyone on NB seems to like, that I don’t like at all:
[name_f]Hermione[/name_f]
[name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f]
[name_m]Blues[/name_m] (seriously? “I’ve got the blues” = I’m sad. Not a positive word to name your kid.)
[name_u]Poet[/name_u]
[name_u]Story[/name_u]
[name_m]Desmond[/name_m]
[name_f]Clementine[/name_f]
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f]
[name_f]Isla[/name_f]
The last four are actually alright, it’s just that they’re INCREDIBLY overrated.

Ugh. I don’t like [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] either.
