I’ve never liked boys names on girls. Things like [name_u]Sydney[/name_u], [name_u]Taylor[/name_u], and [name_u]Jordan[/name_u]. Granted now they are probably mostly considered girls names but I still think of them as masculine. And now we are starting to see very traditional boys names like [name_u]James[/name_u] and [name_m]Wyatt[/name_m] being used on girls. I really just can’t stand it. [name_u]Parker[/name_u], [name_u]Blake[/name_u], [name_u]Ryan[/name_u], [name_u]Devin[/name_u], [name_u]Luca[/name_u], [name_u]Hunter[/name_u], and [name_u]Noah[/name_u] are other names that people consider unisex that I just don’t like on a girl.
For the most part I also not a big fan of name ending being changed to [name_u]Lee[/name_u]. Like [name_f]Kylee[/name_f], [name_f]Ashlee[/name_f], [name_f]Carlee[/name_f], [name_f]Marlee[/name_f], [name_u]Harlee[/name_u], [name_u]Baylee[/name_u], [name_f]Haylee[/name_f], things like that. It just looks wired to me. Unfinished or uneven. [name_m]Just[/name_m] stick to the normal spelling or pick a different name if you want then to be different.
I don’t like the overly ‘pretty’ girls’ names: [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f], Evangaline, [name_f]Mia[/name_f], [name_f]Mila[/name_f], [name_f]Arabella[/name_f], [name_f]Delilah[/name_f], [name_f]Delphine[/name_f], [name_f]Tatiana[/name_f], [name_f]Persephone[/name_f], [name_f]Brianna[/name_f], [name_f]Brielle[/name_f]… they’re just not my type. I also don’t like ones that sound too ‘new’ or made-up (yes, I know, all names were made up at some point and have word meanings at the root of them), don’t have nice connotations for me, or have spellings that look like they’ve been messed with just to be cool: [name_f]Birdie[/name_f], [name_u]Fable[/name_u], [name_f]Sparrow[/name_f], [name_m]Gunner[/name_m], [name_u]Kayden[/name_u]. I don’t like the ones that seem REALLY old-fashioned to me: [name_f]Agatha[/name_f], [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f], [name_f]Priscilla[/name_f]… but then I do like [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f], [name_f]Tessa[/name_f], [name_f]Edie[/name_f] etc.
Can I just say that I love this thread so much? It’s great to have a place to vent, because I’m sure I’m not the only one who cringes and dies a little inside when I hear of some poor child getting named/possibly getting named something I see as hideous
I even see a few names that I love, like [name_f]Brielle[/name_f], [name_f]Arabella[/name_f] or [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] and I don’t even care. It’s all very entertaining to read! Especially people go into such hilarious detail on why they hate it. Good stuff.
P.S.: I also second the [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] hate. I don’t think that’s cute, at all.
Names I don’t like:
“old lady/old man names” I just have issues seeming them on a child, such as [name_f]Margot[/name_f], [name_f]Edith[/name_f], [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], [name_m]Edmund[/name_m], [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] etc.
[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]- I just hear the [name_m]Feel[/name_m]-ya in the middle/end and it makes it sound like a verb
Any “food” name such as [name_f]Clementine[/name_f], [name_f]Olive[/name_f], [name_m]Basil[/name_m], etc
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f]- I always read it just like Cantaloupe when written out.
[name_m]Moses[/name_m]- This name sounds very heavy to my ear.
[name_f]Olive[/name_f], [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], [name_f]Clementine[/name_f], and [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] all seem to be extremely popular here on Nameberry, but I just can’t stand them. They feel so ugly to me.
I prefer classic and traditional names that can fit a person at any age. In addition, I want a name taht is viewed as strong amd professional, which many names I see are not. They are more trendy and cutesy.
I also tend to stay away from those in the current top 20, regardless of how beautiful.
Popular NB names: [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], [name_f]Faye[/name_f], [name_f]Romilly[/name_f], [name_u]Bellamy[/name_u], [name_u]Rowen[/name_u], [name_f]Rowena[/name_f], [name_f]Ramona[/name_f], [name_f]Carys[/name_f], [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f], [name_f]Elodie[/name_f].
Others:
Fad-ish -ly/lee, -den names. [name_u]Haley[/name_u], [name_f]Kaylee[/name_f], [name_u]Ashley[/name_u], [name_f]Brynlee[/name_f], [name_u]Hayden[/name_u], [name_u]Jayden[/name_u],
[name_m]Mac[/name_m]- names: [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u], [name_f]Mikayla[/name_f].
[name_m]Al[/name_m]/An/Am and -iya/aya names. [name_f]Aliyah[/name_f], [name_f]Aniyah[/name_f], [name_f]Amaya[/name_f], etc. Some of them just sound made-up.
[name_f]Cadence[/name_f]
I can’t stand [name_f]Arabella[/name_f]. It’s very popular on Nameberry, and I definitely see the appeal, but it’s just looks… I don’t know, but definitely not pretty.
[name_f]Greer[/name_f]/Gier… just WHHYY?! It sounds so harsh and awful. Not feminine at all! (not that I would wish it on a boy either)
[name_f]Arabella[/name_f]… again, it sounds super harsh to me, like someone thought [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f] was too frilly and needed to me “masculined-up”. Blurgh!
[name_m]Dashiell[/name_m]… what even is that?? It is hard to say and looks so convoluted…
[name_u]Fran[/name_u]-anything… Francoise, [name_f]Francine[/name_f], [name_f]Frances[/name_f]… Nope! They always sound harsh to me, and somehow clunky. I can only just come at [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] (and I think that is because the -a dies a little to soften it).
[name_f]Sarah[/name_f], [name_f]Hannah[/name_f], etc… so bland, boring, and over-used.
[name_m]Graham[/name_m], [name_u]Lionel[/name_u], [name_m]Malcolm[/name_m], etc… dated Dad names. They’re so unappealing. They just sound so wrong on babies.
I really dislike a lot of popular nameberry names like [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], [name_f]Adeline[/name_f], [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f], [name_f]Ava[/name_f], jasper, [name_m]Atticus[/name_m], [name_m]Oscar[/name_m], and [name_f]Nova[/name_f]
I see this name CONSTANTLY, both on here and in real life, an I honestly feel like I’m the only person on the planet who doesn’t like it. [name_u]Theo[/name_u] by itself is totally fine, [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] is fine, even Ted is alright, but [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]? Nope. Sorry, I just don’t like it. When I picture a [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], I picture an extremely nerdy boy who has few to no friends and who gets mercilessly bullied at school. [name_m]Even[/name_m] worse, it reminds me of [name_m]Alvin[/name_m] and the chipmunks (one of them is named [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]) and those irritating characters make me want to drive ice picks into my ears.
Other popular NB names I dislike include [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], [name_f]Imogen[/name_f], [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]/[name_f]Margot[/name_f], [name_m]Declan[/name_m], [name_m]Casper[/name_m]/[name_m]Caspian[/name_m], [name_m]Alfred[/name_m], [name_m]Walter[/name_m] and [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]. I also dislike [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f], [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f], [name_m]Thor[/name_m], [name_u]Loki[/name_u], [name_m]Zeus[/name_m], etc. they’re just a little too much for a mortal in my opinion.
[name_f]Poppy[/name_f]: Sounds like what a kid calls their grandpa, while also seeming overly childish. And it looks like “poopy.”
[name_f]Aria[/name_f]: Pretty, but so bland and insubstantial. Like giving decorative hand soaps as a gift — nothing really wrong, just isn’t there something better?
I really love some of the names others are mentioning here, so it’s fun to see the variety. Nameberry has definitely broadened my perspective on how geography still matters a lot for name choices, especially between the U.S. and U.K.
