Royal Baby

Does anyone have any guesses as to names that might be given to a prince or princess when [name]Princess[/name] [name]William[/name] and Duchess [name]Catherine[/name] have a child?

I am guessing that their first child will be a girl named [name]Alice[/name] [name]Imogen[/name] [name]Diana[/name].

Anyone else want to take a guess?

The names below are all royal names through the ages. They will probably be something traditional for the first born (male or female) and perhaps a name not held by a close family member (family names may be pushed to the middle spot). The first seven names on the girls list are the names of queens that are currently not used in the family so they’re ripe for the picking! I would love them to call their first girl [name]Diana[/name] but since her death and [name]Prince[/name] [name]Charles[/name]’ remarriage to [name]Camilla[/name], the [name]Royal[/name] Family have been trying to write her out of the history books so it may be a middle name only.

Girl

[name]Charlotte[/name] (could honour [name]Prince[/name] [name]William[/name]'s father [name]Charles[/name])

[name]Louisa[/name]/[name]Louise[/name]
[name]Amelia[/name]
[name]Anne[/name] (aunt)

[name]Jane[/name]
[name]Alice[/name]
[name]Joan[/name]
[name]Marina[/name]
[name]Elizabeth[/name] (present queen)

I love [name]Diana[/name] I remember like it was yesterday with her death her and Mother [name]Theresa[/name]!!! [name]Diana[/name] was a wonderful woman. I looked up to her growing up!!

I read somewhere, that If they had a daughter her middle names were going to be [name]Diana[/name] and [name]Elizabeth[/name] (in no particular order). For a first name, I think perhaps [name]Alice[/name] or [name]Charlotte[/name].

I’m hoping for a little [name]Diana[/name].

For a little prince I think we could be looking at [name]Albert[/name] or [name]George[/name], perhaps [name]William[/name] or [name]Henry[/name]. Or maybe [name]Kate[/name] will surprise us with a more unusual name thrown in. But [name]William[/name] and [name]Charles[/name] would have to be in the mix somewhere. I’d love for [name]Albert[/name] to be brought back as it hasn’t been used as a FN since [name]George[/name] [name]VI[/name] was born in 1895! I’d also like to see [name]John[/name] used again- the royal family apparently have a thing about it being bad luck and [name]Diana[/name] reportedly wanted to name [name]William[/name] ‘[name]John[/name]’ after her brother but was prevented from doing so.

For a little princess- [name]Charlotte[/name], [name]Elizabeth[/name], [name]Alice[/name] or [name]Victoria[/name] would be lovely! And [name]Catherine[/name] will be a middle name somewhere, maybe [name]Philippa[/name].

And how many do you reckon they’ll end up having?! I think 4 is a good number  I’m hoping they’ll match the Crown [name]Prince[/name] and [name]Princess[/name] of Denmark

I love [name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Diana[/name], [name]Alice[/name] [name]Diana[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name], [name]Eleanor[/name] [name]Diana[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] or [name]Helena[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Diana[/name] for a girl. There also could be a [name]Johanna[/name] or [name]Joanna[/name] instead of [name]Joan[/name]. For a boy - I like [name]Alfred[/name] [name]Louis[/name] [name]James[/name] and [name]Edward[/name] [name]Louis[/name] [name]Alexander[/name] for some reason.

As an American with UK roots, I am very interested in this. I would like the daughter to be [name]Diana[/name]. I think [name]Prince[/name] [name]William[/name] would as well.

For any Brits out there, how much say do [name]Kate[/name] and [name]William[/name] have over the naming of their own child?

The little girl just has to be [name]Diana[/name]! She was a beautiful woman inside and out and [name]Diana[/name] is a timeless and lovely name.

[name]Ah[/name] man, I thought I commented on this the other day but it appears to have not shown up :frowning: I think a little [name]Princess[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name], [name]Elizabeth[/name], [name]Victoria[/name] or [name]Alice[/name] would be lovely, and [name]Catherine[/name] will be thrown into it somewhere, maybe [name]Philippa[/name] too. I don’t think they’ll use [name]Diana[/name] for a FN, but Frances could be a MN.

As for a little [name]Prince[/name] I think we could be looking at [name]George[/name], [name]Arthur[/name], [name]Edward[/name] or [name]Albert[/name], maybe [name]William[/name], [name]Henry[/name] or [name]Richard[/name]. [name]Charles[/name] may be in there somewhere. I’m hoping for a little [name]Albert[/name]- it hasn’t been used as a FN since [name]George[/name] [name]VI[/name] was born in 1895! And [name]John[/name] needs a comeback too. The royals apparently have a thing about it being unlucky and [name]Diana[/name] reportedly wanted to use it for [name]William[/name] but was prevented from doing so.

sheena12- I think they can choose the name themselves, but the [name]Queen[/name] has the last say as she has to approve the names. So I don’t think there will be a future [name]Prince[/name] [name]Jayden[/name]…

If they have a daughter she will without doubt have the name [name]Diana[/name] somewhere in the combo.

I hope that they don’t go for a dorky vintage name but rather a spunky today name with flair and why not infuse something of the 21st century into the name by going for something modern?

[name]Princess[/name] [name]Arabella[/name] [name]Blaise[/name] [name]Diana[/name]
[name]Princess[/name] [name]Imogen[/name] [name]Juliet[/name] [name]Diana[/name]
[name]Princess[/name] [name]Aurora[/name] [name]Diana[/name] [name]Hope[/name]
[name]Princess[/name] [name]Vivienne[/name] [name]Diana[/name] [name]Louise[/name]

and

[name]Prince[/name] [name]Louis[/name] [name]Rupert[/name] [name]Blake[/name]
[name]Prince[/name] [name]Jamison[/name] [name]Llewellyn[/name] [name]Charles[/name]
[name]Prince[/name] [name]Alister[/name] [name]Robert[/name] [name]Harry[/name]

And [name]Duke[/name] and Duchess of Cambridge if you are reading this please give your child a name with a modern angle avoiding all the pitfalls of tryndy naming.

rollo

That probably means there will be no [name]Diana[/name] since there is no way the queen would approve of that! Maybe as a middle name, but not as a first. Sad since I think it would be really sweet if they did name their girl [name]Diana[/name].

I would love to see a princess [name]Alice[/name] and [name]Diana[/name] would be cute if they added it to the name. Honestly I would love a [name]Victoria[/name] as a princess because the name is so elegant and would fit a princess.

For a boy I would love [name]Rupert[/name] (I love this name but my hubby vetoed it) or [name]Louis[/name] like someone else mentioned.

I don’t think the royal couple will choose a trendy name.

A little [name]Prince[/name]:
I’m fairly certain that one of the three “middle names” (except, for royals they aren’t middle names, they’re just … other names) will be [name]Arthur[/name] which is a name held by both the [name]Prince[/name] of [name]Wales[/name] and the [name]Duke[/name] of Cambridge, and it was also one of [name]King[/name] [name]George[/name] [name]VI[/name]'s names. Then there’s the [name]Michael[/name] (for [name]Michael[/name] Middleton) and [name]Charles[/name] (for the [name]Prince[/name] of [name]Wales[/name]), I think [name]Michael[/name] has a fair shot, but I think it’s more likely that we’ll get to see [name]Philip[/name] (for the [name]Duke[/name] of Edinburgh) there rather than [name]Charles[/name] - maybe both will be in there. More unlikely (or as I like to call them, the “second-baby”) names are [name]Richard[/name], [name]Alfred[/name], [name]Frederick[/name], [name]Patrick[/name] and [name]David[/name].
For first names, I am so torn because my favourite definitely is [name]James[/name], but it’s just so unlikely they’ll name a song that as both [name]Catherine[/name]'s brother and [name]William[/name]'s cousin are named that. I think it’ll be between either [name]George[/name] or [name]Albert[/name], both names have things speaking against them though; [name]George[/name] is horribly old-fashioned, and there already is a little [name]Albert[/name] in the family. An outsider of sorts could be [name]Alexander[/name], there’s been a Scottish [name]King[/name] named [name]Alexander[/name] I, so a little [name]Alexander[/name] would actually be [name]King[/name] [name]Alexander[/name] II. It would also be a nice homage to [name]Queen[/name] [name]Alexandra[/name], the wife of [name]King[/name] [name]Edward[/name] VII.

[name]George[/name] [name]Philip[/name] [name]Arthur[/name] [name]Michael[/name]
[name]Albert[/name] [name]Philip[/name] [name]Arthur[/name] [name]Charles[/name]
[name]George[/name] [name]Arthur[/name] [name]James[/name] [name]Michael[/name]
[name]Albert[/name] [name]Charles[/name] [name]David[/name] [name]Michael[/name]

And the outsider:
[name]Alexander[/name] [name]Charles[/name] [name]Arthur[/name] [name]Philip[/name]

A little [name]Princess[/name]:
There are so many likely names for a girl, [name]Elizabeth[/name] (for [name]Queen[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] I and Her [name]Majesty[/name], [name]Queen[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] II), [name]Victoria[/name] (for [name]Queen[/name] [name]Victoria[/name]), [name]Mary[/name] (for [name]Queen[/name] [name]Mary[/name] I + II), [name]Alexandra[/name] (for the [name]Queen[/name] Consort, [name]Alexandra[/name] of Denmark) and [name]Margaret[/name] (for [name]Queen[/name] [name]Margaret[/name] I of [name]Scotland[/name] and [name]Princess[/name] [name]Margaret[/name], the [name]Countess[/name] of Snowdon), I’m not sure which one of them they’re going to use, but I’m almost certain it’s gonna be one of those. As for “middle names”, I feel very tempted to say “the ones above not used as a first name”, but then again there’s [name]Charlotte[/name], [name]Rose[/name], [name]Diana[/name], [name]Alice[/name], [name]Frances[/name], [name]Anne[/name] and [name]Caroline[/name] (which is a more regal version of [name]Catherine[/name]'s mum’s name, [name]Carole[/name]). I also think that [name]Philippa[/name] could be a nice homage to both the [name]Duke[/name] of Edinburgh and [name]Pippa[/name] Middleton. I am not sure that [name]Diana[/name] is going to be used at all, it’s very easy to believe that [name]William[/name] would want to pay respect to his mother, but then it wouldn’t be “more” than giving his daughter either [name]Diana[/name] or [name]Frances[/name] as a “middle name”. [name]Victoria[/name] as the first name also kind of bugs me, I mean, “[name]Queen[/name] [name]Victoria[/name]” is some name to live up to.

[name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Caroline[/name] [name]Diana[/name] [name]Victoria[/name]
[name]Victoria[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Caroline[/name] [name]Diana[/name]
[name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Margaret[/name] [name]Anne[/name]
[name]Victoria[/name] [name]Philippa[/name] [name]Mary[/name] [name]Alexandra[/name]

And some outsiders:
[name]Alexandra[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Caroline[/name] [name]Frances[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Caroline[/name] [name]Alice[/name]
[name]Margaret[/name] [name]Caroline[/name] [name]Alexandra[/name] [name]Rose[/name]

They won’t give names that are considered unlucky in the British [name]Royal[/name] Family, like [name]John[/name] or [name]Richard[/name]. [name]James[/name] is still too tied to the Jacobites.

The [name]German[/name] names ([name]Charlotte[/name], [name]Albert[/name]) are still off-limits, imo.

They have spoken candidly in interviews about using [name]Diana[/name] for a first daughter, at least as a first middle. [name]Pippa[/name] Middleton strikes me as an unlikely namesake.

Personally I would love to see some of the more ancient royal names revived, like [name]Eleanor[/name]/[name]Alienor[/name] or some of the old ethel- names. It would also be interesting (not to mention politically expedient) to have a Welsh, Scottish and Irish name, especially given the pains both [name]William[/name] (living on Anglesey) and [name]Charles[/name] have taken to identify with [name]Wales[/name].

I really cant see them using [name]Diana[/name] as a first name, possibly a middle but i’m not convinced about that either. I think that [name]William[/name] had a special relationship with his mum and would definetely want to honor her but I think it’ll be more subtle than that. When you remember [name]Diana[/name] a lot of good things come to mind but it’s impossible not to think about all the sadness and tragedy in her life and the terrible way that it ended. Thats an awful lot of baggage to pass on to a little girl, plus [name]William[/name] has made no secret of the fact he is very protective of [name]Kate[/name] so imagine what he’ll be like with his kids. Theres already sooooo much interest in this baby before its even conceived I think that using the name [name]Diana[/name] would be like puting a target on her for the press, there will be a flood of comparison anyway we already seen it with [name]Kate[/name] so if their first child is a girl the same thing will happen with her and naming her [name]Diana[/name] i feel would just add fuel to it all. Also the name could be seen as unlucky in a way so the superstitious royal family might vito it on those grounds.

Of course I could be completely wrong and [name]William[/name] could channel some of his mother and brothers rebelious nature and call the baby [name]Diana[/name] just to spite his granny :stuck_out_tongue:

Who knows but peronally the name just reminds me of [name]Michael[/name] Jacksons Dirty [name]Diana[/name], I much prefer [name]Victoria[/name] or [name]Alexandria[/name] they just have a regal feel imo and for a boy I think [name]Alfred[/name] ([name]Alfie[/name]) or [name]Arthur[/name] would be nice

If their first baby is a girl, she would not be [name]Diana[/name].

Now that their first baby will, in theory, ascend to the throne (that’s assuming the UK still has a monarchy then), so if the first baby is a girl she will be the future [name]Queen[/name]. There will be no [name]Queen[/name] [name]Diana[/name], it’s not a traditional royal name in the UK.

I fully expect they will, of course, use it as a middle name.

I can actually see them using [name]Elizabeth[/name] for a girl, after the [name]Queen[/name], and it’s also [name]Kate[/name]'s middle name (and her mum’s MN too). And of course, it was also the [name]Queen[/name] Mother’s name, and [name]William[/name] adored his great-grandmother.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they used [name]Margaret[/name] as a MN - perhaps not for a first daughter - but if they had a subsequent daughter. [name]Princess[/name] [name]Margaret[/name] was the [name]Queen[/name]'s sister and I have a hunch that she would be honored if possible.

I’m going to stick my neck out and predict their first child will be a girl and she’ll be [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Diana[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name] or [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Diana[/name].

If I recall, I remember reading that [name]William[/name] has said they’d like two children, but I think their second child will turn out to be boy/girl twins. I don’t know why I think this, I just do.

I think they’d be called [name]Henry[/name] [name]Philip[/name] [name]Albert[/name] & [name]Alice[/name] [name]Margaret[/name] [name]Anne[/name].

Traditionally it seems that the family of the future monarch’s spouse are not honored in names, so for example [name]William[/name] and [name]Harry[/name] don’t have any names from [name]Diana[/name]'s family, even her father. I find that rather bizarre when I first learned of that. Therefore it’s hard to say if [name]Kate[/name]'s family will be honored in the names, and on past form, it seems unlikely.

Edited to add: I also agree with archiemrs11 about the name [name]Diana[/name] - I don’t think Wililam would want to give any daughter him and [name]Kate[/name] have, the pressure of having the first name [name]Diana[/name], and all the expectation that would bring. Knowing what the British media are like, they’d all be expecting this hypothetical child to be “just like [name]Diana[/name]”, and that’s an awful lot for anyone to live up to.

I love [name]Alice[/name], it would be a nice homage to both the [name]DoE[/name]'s mother and also the late Duchess of Gloucester.

It would however surprise me very much if the child isn’t given four names like everyone else in the immediate family.

I’d understand why they wouldn’t use a name like [name]Adolf[/name], but to be quite fair both [name]Charlotte[/name] and [name]Albert[/name] have been used so many times in the royal family ([name]Harry[/name] bears the name [name]Albert[/name] and it was the birth name of HM’s father as well).

[name]Diana[/name] would never be used as a first name for a firstborn daughter, first of all there would be the constant comparisons to [name]Princess[/name] [name]Diana[/name], and [name]Diana[/name] isn’t a “[name]Queen[/name]'s name” so to speak. I think they’re gonna stick to tradition with with their first child’s name, no matter which sex it’ll be.
[name]Philippa[/name] is [name]Catherine[/name]'s sister so why not? [name]Philippa[/name] herself is named after [name]Edward[/name] III’s wife, the [name]Queen[/name] Consort, [name]Philippa[/name] of Hainault. Besides, I think they’d use [name]Philippa[/name] for the [name]Duke[/name] of Edinburgh more than for [name]Pippa[/name].

The Windsors have taken great pains to distance themselves from their Hanoverian past. [name]Charlotte[/name] and [name]Albert[/name] were overtly [name]German[/name], back when the [name]Royal[/name] family were still [name]Saxe[/name]-Coburg-Gothas. After WW1 no one was given these names as firsts (though, as you noted, they’re still given as honorifics in the middle).

[name]Even[/name] though [name]Philippa[/name] as a name has a legitimate history as a minor royal name, it is currently too tied to [name]Pippa[/name] Middleton and as noted above heirs to the throne are not named after anyone who was not born royal. Neither are cross-gender honorifics used (i.e. [name]Philippa[/name] for [name]Philip[/name]).

I think, from his interviews (which are unfailingly polite and proper), [name]Prince[/name] [name]William[/name] strongly disagrees with the attempts made to separate his mother from the Royals after her divorce and death, and does not want her written out of the family’s history books. I suspect he’ll want the name [name]Diana[/name] given (again, most likely as a first middle) as an act of tribute and defiance.

For a boy, names like Philip and Richard could also be possibilities.
A Philip would be King Philip II and a Richard would be King Richard IV.

I think they’re returning and quite frankly, it would be silly otherwise. [name]Lord[/name] [name]Nicholas[/name] [name]Windsor[/name]'s two sons both have “Germanic” names, [name]Albert[/name] and [name]Leopold[/name]. [name]Charlotte[/name] is a very popular name all over the world practically, if not at least in the English-speaking countries. I do however think it’s a long-shot to believe that a firstborn daughter would be named [name]Charlotte[/name], as the BRF seems to be loving traditional names (like they should, I feel quite sorry for [name]Princess[/name] [name]Estelle[/name] of [name]Sweden[/name]).

There’s no doubt [name]Philippa[/name] wont be used as a first name, it’s too close to [name]Philip[/name] and obviously there is [name]Pippa[/name] Middleton, and I never claimed otherwise. I do think it’s a likely “middle” name, if not for a firstborn girl, then for a younger sister.

Obviously [name]William[/name] would never not call his daughter [name]Diana[/name] because of the divorce, more because she immediately would be dubbed “the new [name]Diana[/name]” even more than she would otherwise (being [name]Diana[/name]'s granddaughter, there will be comparisons for sure). I am sure he’s gonna pay tribute to her either in a daughter’s name ([name]Diana[/name] or [name]Frances[/name]) or a son’s ([name]Francis[/name]) though. He’ll find a way, but if his firstborn is a girl, I think it’s extremely unlikely that her first name will be [name]Diana[/name] (or [name]Frances[/name] for that matter).

Some of you suggest 3 names. Why?

[name]Both[/name] [name]William[/name] and [name]Henry[/name] have 4, do they not?

I am guessing [name]Alexander[/name] [name]Charles[/name] [name]Michael[/name] [name]Philip[/name] and [name]Matilda[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Diana[/name] [name]Carole[/name].
