Continuing my love affair with boy names ending in A with my latest crush: [name_m]Rua[/name_m] (ROO-ah)
It’s a simplified spelling of the Irish name [name_m]Ruadh[/name_m] “red”, and both spellings are in rare but regular use in [name_f]Ireland[/name_f]. Last year, [name_m]Rua[/name_m] ranked in the #300s there and [name_m]Ruadh[/name_m] in the #400s – so familiar, but not super popular.
What do you think of [name_m]Rua[/name_m]? What middle names would you pair with it?
It’s not my personal style but I quite like it for you! I think it goes well with your other children’s names. Short and spunky!
I’d go for something more masculine as a middle, just to be sure. And somewhat long since [name_m]Rua[/name_m] is so short. Something like [name_m]Rua[/name_m] [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m], [name_m]Rua[/name_m] [name_u]Callahan[/name_u], [name_m]Rua[/name_m] [name_m]Caspian[/name_m], [name_m]Rua[/name_m] [name_m]Felix[/name_m], [name_m]Rua[/name_m] [name_m]Leander[/name_m], [name_m]Rua[/name_m] [name_m]Maximilian[/name_m], [name_m]Rua[/name_m] [name_m]Malcolm[/name_m], [name_m]Rua[/name_m] [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m], [name_m]Rua[/name_m] [name_m]Percival[/name_m], [name_m]Rua[/name_m] [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u], [name_m]Rua[/name_m] [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m], [name_m]Rua[/name_m] [name_m]Tobias[/name_m], [name_m]Rua[/name_m] [name_m]Vincent[/name_m], [name_m]Rua[/name_m] [name_u]Wilder[/name_u], [name_m]Rua[/name_m] [name_m]Xander[/name_m], etc.
I saw it recently on a list of yours and it immediately went onto my name list! I really like it. I’m a big R name fan - [name_u]Remy[/name_u], [name_u]Rory[/name_u], [name_u]Rex[/name_u], [name_m]Rafferty[/name_m], [name_m]Raphael[/name_m], Rio etc. - and [name_m]Rua[/name_m] feels like a mix of [name_u]Rory[/name_u], Rio and [name_u]Rue[/name_u] (which I also love) to me. It’s very spunky and whilst it’s unusual, it’s also very wearable (in my opinion).
You always have the best finds! [name_m]Rua[/name_m] reminds me of ruach which is the Hebrew word for spirit (but meant more in a pep rally/summer camp way). All the roo names have such a gentle strength that I really love.
Ooh, so many amazing names here (love seeing another [name_m]Sacheverell[/name_m] fan!) but [name_m]Balthasar[/name_m], [name_m]Felician[/name_m], [name_m]Lysander[/name_m] and especially the gorgeous [name_u]Peregrine[/name_u] are especially singing for me with [name_m]Rua[/name_m]. Thanks so much!
Ooooh, I’ve never heard of [name_m]Rua[/name_m] but I love it! So simple, but bright and full of energy and personality (I also just like “Ru” names, so that’s probably part of it). You’ve gotten so many amazing middle name suggestions already, but I’ll come back if I can think of anything else I love!
Rua [name_m]Felix[/name_m], [name_m]Rua[/name_m] [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], [name_m]Rua[/name_m] [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] and [name_m]Rua[/name_m] [name_u]Bellamy[/name_u] came to mind
I don’t think I’ve seen [name_m]Rua[/name_m] [name_u]Willow[/name_u], [name_m]Rua[/name_m] [name_u]Thaddeus[/name_u], [name_m]Rua[/name_m] [name_u]Taliesin[/name_u] or [name_m]Rua[/name_m] [name_u]Cassidy[/name_u] yet and I love them, thank you.
I agree! It’s such a sweet, rugged and lively little name.
So many amazing ideas but [name_m]Phineas[/name_m], [name_m]Raphael[/name_m], [name_m]Faraday[/name_m], [name_m]Isidore[/name_m] and [name_u]Winslow[/name_u] are especially grabbing me.
And [name_u]Peregrine[/name_u] again! Thanks to all who have suggested it, I think [name_m]Rua[/name_m] [name_u]Peregrine[/name_u] is the favourite so far
Rua is interesting… but honestly just makes me think of the Portuguese word for “street”, le sigh.
I like everyone’s ideas for combos; I just can’t really get past “street”? Also, ironically, reminds me of [name_f]Lua[/name_f] (Portuguese word for “moon”), and both [name_m]Rua[/name_m] and [name_f]Lua[/name_f] in Portuguese are feminine, so I find it harder to see on a boy? But besides my association with Portuguese I think I’d see the appeal.
I didn’t know it was Portuguese for “street”, that’s good to know. I don’t think it would put me off ultimately but I can definitely see why it’s hard to get past for you. I feel the same about [name_u]Rue[/name_u] being “street” in [name_u]French[/name_u], even though I love it.
Yeah, similar concept for sure! Weirdly I sort of like that about [name_u]Rue[/name_u]—it just seems so romantic and I see Parisian cobblestone streets and all sorts of [name_u]French[/name_u] adventures. But [name_m]Rua[/name_m] just makes me think of a dirt road in the middle of Brazilian wilderness. Somehow, not quite so romantic!
