She's a Girl! And we think her name is Arwen!

Yes, we’re changing our minds again! We’ve gone from [name]Harriet[/name] to [name]Alice[/name] to [name]Imogen[/name] to now [name]Arwen[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] Manis.
[name]Imogen[/name] ended up being nixed because my dad’s first reaction was to shorten it to “[name]Emma[/name]”. :frowning: Not cool. I have a sister who has hated being called “[name]Pam[/name]” all her life and has constantly had to tell people, “it’s [name]Pamela[/name], not [name]Pam[/name]”. I don’t want my daughter to have to do the same with her name. [name]Arwen[/name] isn’t really able to be shortened. “Wen” is the only nickname I can think of and I like it, so it doesn’t bother me.
The middle names we were considering for [name]Imogen[/name], [name]Garland[/name] and [name]Wolfe[/name], don’t really go with [name]Arwen[/name] unfortunately. [name]Arwen[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] is really the only combo we’ve been able to come up with. My DH really likes it and I think it sounds good, but I’m still on the fence about naming her after myself. My name is [name]Cathryn[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name]. I keep trying to justify it in my mind by thinking that she’s named after two of my favorite literary characters, [name]Arwen[/name] Undomiel and [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Bennet[/name], instead of thinking she’s named after me.
So what does everyone think? [name]Will[/name] a little [name]Arwen[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] fit in with big brother, [name]Benton[/name] [name]Grover[/name], and mom and dad, [name]Cathryn[/name] and [name]Brian[/name]? Any suggestions for alternate middle names?

I love [name]Arwen[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name]! I’m a huge fan of LOTR/Pride and Prejudice, so [name]Arwen[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] is pretty much perfect.

I don’t think it’s a bad thing that you and [name]Arwen[/name] would share a middle name-it’s quite sweet, actually. [name]Elizabeth[/name] is usually seen as a filler middle name, but I love that it’s your middle name/the inspiration from the character.

[name]Arwen[/name] would fit right in with [name]Benton[/name]!

I adore it! [name]Arwen[/name] is such a pretty name, I have loved it ever since I was young but was afraid that I would only be able to use it in the middle spot which just doesn’t do it enough justice. I think [name]Arwen[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] sounds absolutely beautiful. ([name]Elizabeth[/name] is my middle name and I was also named after my mom, but I’ve always loved that connection to her as I am sure your daughter will too). I have to add that one of the reasons I love [name]Arwen[/name] so much is because of the super cute nn [name]Ari[/name]. I know you said you wanted a name that would normally be used in full but if she ever decided she wanted a nn that would be an option as well as Wen. Congrats! =]

Thank you, susan.n! Sounds like you’re a bit of a geek girl too.

I hadn’t thought of that NN, amydomsmom! Very cute! Thank you!

I think [name]Arwen[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] is beautiful!

Thank you, agent99!

[name]Arwen[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] is OK but as another poster mention it’s often a filler so it’s very expected

[name]Arwen[/name] [name]Imogen[/name] sounds great and fits better with [name]Benton[/name] [name]Grover[/name] because both kids will have two unique, stand-out names.

[name]Arwen[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] is very pretty, but with [name]Benton[/name] [name]Grover[/name] I’d expect something a bit cooler. But I do love Pride & Prejudice, and [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Bennett[/name] is quite cool…

[name]Arwen[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] is a stunning combo! I [name]LOVE[/name] it.

Thank you for all the suggestions, lori johnson! I don’t know why I hadn’t thought of [name]Arwen[/name] [name]Hazel[/name]! [name]Hazel[/name] is a family name on both mine and my DH’s sides of the family. It’s a name we really love and I think it equals [name]Grover[/name] quite nicely.
I agree with what everyone is saying. [name]Arwen[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] is a beautiful name, but I can’t even begin to tell you how many women I have met in my short life with [name]Elizabeth[/name] somewhere in their name and that does bother me some. Especially, since [name]Benton[/name] [name]Grover[/name] is so unusual and special.
I’m really liking [name]Arwen[/name] [name]Hazel[/name], but would love to hear more suggestions for the MN! We tend to like old unusual names and we’re total geeks so any name that has connection to geeky literature or culture is going to suit us. I also like names like [name]Helen[/name] and [name]Amelia[/name] that have strong female connections. I want my baby girl to know that she can do absolutely anything she puts her mind to and I’d love for her name to reflect that. I want her to be a self rescuing princess instead of a damsel in distress if you know what I mean. Our last name is Manis, so names like [name]Alice[/name] are out. :frowning:

[name]Arwen[/name] is awesome, it’s on my list as well.

What middle names do you like with it, sabrinafair?

[name]Arwen[/name] is gorgeous (I also love [name]Eowyn[/name] (from LOTR) and [name]Elowen[/name]) and [name]Arwen[/name] [name]Hazel[/name] is stunning. Would you like a longer mn to avoid the 2-2-2 syllables with your last name?

[name]Arwen[/name] [name]Hermione[/name]
[name]Arwen[/name] [name]Cordelia[/name]
[name]Arwen[/name] [name]Bellamy[/name]
[name]Arwen[/name] [name]Romilly[/name]
[name]Arwen[/name] [name]Millicent[/name]
[name]Arwen[/name] [name]Lydia[/name]
[name]Arwen[/name] [name]Cassia[/name]
[name]Arwen[/name] [name]Athena[/name]
[name]Arwen[/name] [name]Jane[/name]
[name]Arwen[/name] [name]Morgana[/name]

Congratulations! I love the name [name]Arwen[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] it’s gorgeous. Good choice.

While a longer name would probably sound better to most, the 2-2-2 syllables don’t really bother me. [name]Benton[/name] [name]Grover[/name] has 2-2-2 syllables and I love his name. We often call [name]Benton[/name] by both of his names or “Mr. [name]Grover[/name]” and I would like to be able to do something similar with [name]Arwen[/name]'s name, so I don’t want anything that’s going to be a mouthful.
From your suggestions, missy, my favorite is [name]Arwen[/name] [name]Hermione[/name]. Is that too geeky though? Those are two names that are so connected to characters from hugely popular fiction.
Thank you, snow_white.

Here are some brave literary women:

[name]Hester[/name] (The [name]Scarlet[/name] Letter)

[name]Cordelia[/name]
Boudica
[name]Emmeline[/name]
[name]Indira[/name]
[name]Roxana[/name]

I love [name]Arwen[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name].

I don’t think a “filler” MN matters so much, when the first name is quite distinctive, which is the case with [name]Arwen[/name].

I only find fillers a bit boring, when they follow really common names, i.e. [name]Olivia[/name] [name]Rose[/name].

Thank you, maggiemary!
[name]Ottilie[/name], I really like your suggestion of [name]Arwen[/name] [name]Josephine[/name]. I love [name]Little[/name] Women. It brought to mind [name]Louisa[/name] which is also a family name and a favorite of my DH’s. [name]Arwen[/name] [name]Louisa[/name]? What do y’all think? And can anyone explain to me how to post a poll? lol

Congratulations!

Does the LOTR connection bother you? In the sense that a great number of people will assume you named her after seeing the movies? If so, there is the very close Welsh name [name]Anwen[/name] to consider.

I think [name]Louisa[/name] complements [name]Arwen[/name] very well-- it’s sweet and not at all fanciful, and really grounds the name.
