Shocked...

That the name [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] is gender neutral on NB.

Are there any more really surprising gender neutral names that people have come across?

I was surprised to learn that [name_u]Zooey[/name_u] was originally a boy name!

[name_u]Ruby[/name_u] is (or was, at least) predominantly a boy’s name in [name_f]France[/name_f].

Goes to show how well travelled I’m not!:expressionless:

@lilea, don’t worry, I only know that because of a movie

[name_u]James[/name_u] shows up as gender neutral. To me, that’s all boy!

Pretty much every name on this list: Geezer Names for Girls | Nameberry

For some strange reason [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] was listed as a girl’s name at one point, but that has since been remedied.

There are quite a few names I’m shocked by their listing as unisex, I can’t remember them all. I was surprised that [name_u]Dorian[/name_u] is classed as a unisex name (not just a boys name), and I was really shocked to find out that [name_u]Jude[/name_u] can be a boys name, and even more surprised at the amount of people who think of it more as a boys name. No offense btw, to anyone who likes [name_u]Jude[/name_u] as a boys name. It’s kind of the other way round, but I was also surprised to see [name_f]Indigo[/name_f] as a girls name instead of unisex.

My advice: [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t believe everything you read on Nameberry.

@myosotis I’m the other way round for Jude. I’ve only ever heard it as a boys name, and I’m shocked that it’s listed as unisex, I can’t imagine it on a girl. I prefer Indigo on a boy too, but I get how it feels girly to some people.

@myosotis - There is a MALE English actor named [name_u]Jude[/name_u] [name_m]Law[/name_m] and St [name_u]Jude[/name_u] is the name of a MALE saint so I’m shocked over your reaction to the fact that it’s a MALE name.

@myosotis: I’m also surprised that you’ve recognized [name_u]Jude[/name_u] as a feminine name, as there are so many male references! It just goes to show how strong personal associations can be!

I love the name on either sex. In fact, I’m not sure I prefer it one way or the other…and it’s on both my Boy and Girl name lists. After some thought, I think I like it best as a feminine middle.

On topic, I’m surprised by quite a few of the gender listings on NB - [name_u]Gary[/name_u] and [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] probably topping that list so far. I’m not bothered by unisex or gender bending names, just surprised sometimes!

Side note: ending a rude comment with a smiley face does not make it any less rude.

I had now-dead great-great uncles called [name_u]Ruby[/name_u].

It was a nickname for [name_m]Reuben[/name_m]/[name_m]Ruben[/name_m]. Nowadays living ones either don’t shorten it or go by [name_m]Ben[/name_m] but I can totally relate to [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] as a guy’s name.

There’s also a quite well known male jockey called [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] [name_m]Walsh[/name_m] (full name [name_m]Rupert[/name_m]).

It’s interesting how sometimes names that I immediately see as being quite clearly male/female, make sense as the other gender once you hear a background or explanation.

This is why I like NB

[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] …

[name_u]Bert[/name_u].

I mean, is it just me that cannot possibly fathom a female [name_u]Bert[/name_u]?

My great-grandfather was named [name_u]Ruby[/name_u].

[name_m]Just[/name_m] finished a book where the narrator was a boy named [name_f]Beverley[/name_f]! That one surprised me!

I actually know a woman who has gone by [name_u]Bert[/name_u] her whole life.
I believe her full name is [name_f]Bertha[/name_f] though.

My brother’s girlfriend is a [name_f]Roberta[/name_f]. She goes by [name_u]Bobby[/name_u] but [name_u]Bert[/name_u] could have worked too.

I’ve known that [name_u]Leslie[/name_u] is a unisex name for a long time, since I came across [name_u]Leslie[/name_u] [name_m]Nielsen[/name_m] as a child, but I still cannot picture that name on a man. When I first heard the name “[name_u]Leslie[/name_u] [name_m]Nielsen[/name_m]” I thought it was a woman. I’d never heard the name before, but just the sound of it screamed “girl” to me. [name_m]Even[/name_m] knowing of a man named [name_u]Leslie[/name_u], and not ever knowing a single female named [name_u]Leslie[/name_u], I still can’t believe it’s a male name.
