The problem with Corinne

I’ve recently begun to put together a list of names for a future child. Over the past month or so, I’ve grown to love the name [name_f]Corinne[/name_f] (my pronunciation: core-rin) – and I want to add it as a real possibility to my list. I think I’ve even begun to love it more than [name_f]Cora[/name_f]. The problem is that I have discovered a great deal of mothers and daughters (through basic internet research) claiming that people constantly mispronounce [name_f]Corinne[/name_f], or have extreme difficulty spelling it. This was a surprise!

Here are my questions:

I greatly value all of your opinions - so thanks in advance!

I know one [name_f]Corinne[/name_f], and she’s never had any problem with her name being mispronounced.
I think it’s a beautiful name, and I really like the [name_f]Corinne[/name_f] I know, so I have favorable feelings about the name.

I knew a [name_f]Corinne[/name_f] growing up who pronounced it the same way you do. [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t know if she had any issues with pronunciation.
I met someone today (maybe in her 80s) who mentioned having a twin sister [name_f]Irene[/name_f] and she said [name_f]Irene[/name_f] and [name_f]Corinne[/name_f] as if they had the same ending sound. But everyone else I’ve heard refer to her as Core-rin. I feel like Core-rin is the more common pronunciation anyway.

I don’t have any real strong associations with the name, which in a way is good. To me it doesn’t sound really dated or anything just a nice name. And you could always use [name_f]Cora[/name_f] as a nn if you wanted. I know a [name_f]Corinna[/name_f] nn [name_f]Cora[/name_f]

I love the name [name_f]Corinne[/name_f]! It’s beautiful.

Many people do seem to default to [name_f]Corrine[/name_f] as a spelling. Still, since names like [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] and [name_m]Steven[/name_m] have multiple spellings (no name is safe!), I wouldn’t let that stop you.

Actually, lizabethm – that is the exact thing I am afraid of. I realize that many people may say Core-een instead of Core-rin. I understand that is the way some people pronounce the name (but I really dislike it!).
I love [name_f]Cora[/name_f] as a nickname too!

I know a [name_f]Corinne[/name_f] who’s never had a real problem with pronunciation.
Any name is going to get some mispronunciation, but if you love it that shouldn’t put you off.
I agree with pp about using [name_f]Corinna[/name_f].

I absolutely love [name_f]Corinne[/name_f] and prn it the way you do. I have never met anyone that prn it Core een. I wouldn’t let that stop me from using the name. It is gorgeous.

[name_f]Corinne[/name_f] and can’t imagine how anyone could not be able to pronounce it.

I know a young woman who says it [name_f]Corinne[/name_f] but spells it Carrenne, which is to me utterly bizarre.

I picture a [name_f]Corinne[/name_f] as very pretty and domestic, yet intelligent and lively – very much like the one I know.

You may get two issues:

Spelling: two r’s or two n’s ([name_f]Corrine[/name_f] vs. [name_f]Corinne[/name_f])
Pronunciation: “een” vs. “in”

You have to decide whether it will be worth the trouble. Usually when corrected once, people will soon get the hang of it. I think it’s a gorgeous name ([name_f]Corinne[/name_f]= "cor-in) and worth the effort.

[name_u]Mischa[/name_u], that is exactly what I am trying to decide. [name_f]Cora[/name_f] seems easier, but it doesn’t have the same unique sound.

[name_m]Will[/name_m] I forever be correcting people? Or will it be something I do rarely? [name_m]How[/name_m] much do I care? I suppose I should be requesting additional input from people who have a name that is very unusual, or that is often mispronounced.

I think [name_f]Corinne[/name_f] is a lovely name, and if I didn’t love [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] so much, she would definitely be on my shortlist! I’ve known a [name_f]Corinne[/name_f] and a [name_f]Corinna[/name_f], and neither (that I know of) have experienced pronunciation issues. [name_f]Hope[/name_f] that helps!

I love the name. I’m not sure which spelling I prefer. I actually would pronounce it Core-Een. But I would understand after being corrected. I would guess that you may have spelling and pronunciation issues (I’ve had both with my name). But if you love the name, then it’s probably worth it. I also like [name_f]Cora[/name_f].

Guessing you’re not in Australia; there’s a minor (minor) celeb with the name, pronounced core-[name_f]RIN[/name_f]. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you put stress on the second syllable? You wouldn’t have issues with pronunciation here.

One of my very dear friends is named corrine, and she would highly recommend the name (trust me facetiming her as I type) She had no problems at all whatsoever with misspellings/mispronunciation
When I thing of [name_f]Corrine[/name_f] I think of rolling hills in tuscany and a princessy like teenage girl ( I knew another [name_f]Corrine[/name_f] spelled with a k though that was an exchange student from Europe very sweet girl)

I love the name [name_f]Corinne[/name_f]! I have a friend with this name and she has never had any issues. If I wasn’t friends with her I would totally consider using this name. I think its beautiful with out being too stuffy or too cutesy. I saw use it!

I am so happy to hear all of this - and I appreciate the input from the actual [name_f]Corinne[/name_f] via Facetime! My only concerns now are my perceptions of the name vs. the perceptions of others – this is something that is hard to measure.
When I think of [name_f]Corinne[/name_f], I think of a woman from the 1930s or 1940s, traveling on a train. I think of it as an older, classic name…but rare.

My 11 year old cousin is named [name_f]Corinne[/name_f] and it definitely fits her. Its a unique name without being out there, plus its lovely looking and sounding. Its also versatile as she could go by [name_u]Cory[/name_u] or [name_f]Cora[/name_f] if she so chooses.

Firstly, no one ever mispronounces [name_f]Corinne[/name_f]'s name. I’ve never once heard her complain about this, and the family all knew how to pronounce her name even before her name was announced. It’s a hard name to mispronounced, and even if it was, the only way I could see it being mispronounced is [name_f]Corinn[/name_f]-ah, which isn’t bad at all; its actually just as pretty.

If you love [name_f]Corinne[/name_f], go for it! Whoever told you that it could be mispronounced is largely unfounded.

Well, I know a [name_f]Corinne[/name_f] who goes by “[name_m]Cor[/name_m]-een”, and she often needs to correct people…so that leads me to believe that most people pronounce it “[name_m]Cor[/name_m]-rin” the first time.
I think it is a beautiful name, I would go for it! [name_m]Even[/name_m] names that you think are immune to pronunciation/spelling issues will still give problems on occasion.

I know 2 [name_f]Corinne[/name_f]'s. One of them is a girl age 15. I don’t know her very well at all. The other is my cousin. As far as I know, no one has ever mispronounced her name. I’ve been able to spell her name for my whole life, so I don’t think spelling’s a problem.
I would love to tell you my “image” of [name_f]Corinne[/name_f], but really, the image is just my cousin. Sweet, sporty, honest, caring, tall, and one of my major role models.

I’ve never heard it before, but I admit that in the title, I read it [name_f]Corrine[/name_f]. I like your way, though, and there is no name that will be pronounced correctly 100% of the time
