i think this is true but I also met a Zosie that pronounced it zo-see and zo-she so I don’t know if it can be both?
If you met brothers Nikolai and Casimir, would you assume one (or both) of their parents are Russian / Slavic?
- Definitely
- Most likely
- Most likely not
- Definitely not
i’d be less likely to assume so if i saw them written down (because of casimir being written with a c instead of a k) but if i just heard them out loud i’d probably think so
How do you pronounce the first syllable of Ari- names: Ariadne, Ariadna, Ariana, Ariane, Ariel? As in, what is your knee-jerk first reaction?
- Air
- Are / R
- Neither
Does the ending of the name play a part or make you say the first syllable differently? I.e. Ariane vs Ariana, Ariadne vs Ariadna, Ariel/Arielle vs Ariela/Ariella/Arielah? And if so, what is the difference?
- No, it’s the same no matter how it ends
- Yes, it ending in -a makes me assume …
- Yes, it ending in -e or -l makes me assume …
- … the first syllable is Air instead of Are / R
- … the first syllable is Are / R instead of Air
- None of the above / I have something else to say
How do you personally prefer the first syllable to be said?
- Air
- Are / R
- Either or
- Neither
And does your preference change based on if it ends in A or not?
- Yes
- No
- Sometimes
And lastly, what is your favourite version of Ari- name(s)?
- Ariadne
- Ariadna
- Ariane
- Ariana
- Arianne
- Arianna
- Ariel
- Arielle
- Ariela
- Ariella
- Arielah
- Aria
- Arianwen
- Arianell
- Aristotle
- Aries
- none of the above
I picked neither, but really it’s both!!
For [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f], I say AIR as the first syllable, but with [name_f]Ariana[/name_f], I say ARE as the first syllable!!
[name_f]Ariadna[/name_f] is AIR
[name_f]Ariane[/name_f] is ARE
[name_u]Ariel[/name_u] is AIR
[name_f]Ariadne[/name_f] and [name_u]Ariel[/name_u] = AIR
[name_f]Ariana[/name_f] and [name_f]Ariane[/name_f] = ARE
[name_f]Ariadna[/name_f] = no idea, I’ve never met one before
ariel/arielle is the only name i would say like AIR - all others i’d say like ARE
i voted are/r because it’s close enough, but in reality with all those names i pronounce them ah-ree, so the r sound comes into play in the second syllable, not the first, if that makes sense!
I say ah as in the phonetic a sound as in apple
so [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f] is arry-add-nee
with the exception of [name_u]Ariel[/name_u] which thanks to [name_f]Disney[/name_f] I say air-ee-ul but [name_u]Arielle[/name_u] I say arry-elle
I also say [name_u]Aries[/name_u] as air-ees and [name_u]Aria[/name_u] is are-ee-uh

neither air nor are, but a secret third thing. i’d say all of them but ariel and ares/aires (AIR-ee-uhl, AIR-eez) and aria (ARE-ee-uh) with a short A (æ?) as in cat.
I knew I was missing one! Thanks so much for pointing this out!
That is actually how I say air, so that may be part of this? Perhaps this whole phonetical endeavor is more complicated than I had anticipated but I do realize writing the sounds of words out does not always translate well here
OMG did you include my emoji suggestion from the other poll?! Thanks so much if you did
it honestly just depends on the name – there’s no real rhyme or reason behind it for the most part. if anything i’d be inspired by the etymology of the name. for example greek aristole is an “air” sound while welsh arianwen is “are.” and for ariel it’s dependent on gender tbh, i’d instinctively say “are” for a boy and “air” for a girl.
@moonage.kc I voted A, L, and M but C was basically tied with those and an honorable mention also goes to F and J.
@GreenEyes375 I didn’t vote for my knee jerk reaction because [name_u]Aria[/name_u] is always ARE and Ariel/le/la, [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f], [name_u]Aries[/name_u], and [name_m]Aristotle[/name_m] are always AIR but everything else is completely random which one will come out of my mouth, I use both interchangeably.
