It sounds the scientific name of something

You could tell me ā€œthis species of sepia was named after biologist [name_u]John[/name_u] [name_m]Ellsworth[/name_m], who discovered it in 1887ā€ and I would believe that

If I met a boy named Rory, I would assume that:

  • That was his full name
  • Itā€™s short for something
  • 50/50 either way
  • Iā€™d be surprised to meet a male Rory at all

If youā€™d assume it was short for something, what would you think the full name was? Just curious.

For native Spanish speakers: How well would Shiloh (g), pronounced SHY-low, work in a Spanish-speaking context?

  • Will probably run into pronounciation issues but overall will be fine!
  • She will probably get confused as a boy at times!
  • Would work well with no issues!
  • Wouldnā€™t work at all!
  • It really depends where you are!

What instinctively comes to mind when you hear the word ā€œnicknameā€?

  • Something somebodyā€™s close family and friends call them only in very casual conversations i.e. Emily ā€œEmā€ or Spencer ā€œSpenceā€ (usually without asking permission)
  • Something somebody doesnā€™t always go by but uses enough that they might identify with it/think of it as their name
  • Something somebody goes by almost exclusively
  • ā€¦and Iā€™m from the US
  • ā€¦and Iā€™m from the UK
  • ā€¦and Iā€™m from another English-speaking country
  • ā€¦and Iā€™m from somewhere else

When I hear nickname, I think ā€œany name thatā€™s not your given name.ā€ My kids have a ton of at-home nicknames that theyā€™ll never use in regular life (e.g. Katherine to Katydid) but Iā€™ve also gone by a nickname my entire life (e.g. Elizabeth to Lizzie). Theyā€™re both real uses of the concept of a nickname, and I donā€™t think of one more than the other as the true meaning of the word.

This is purely out of curiosity. I realized recently that there have been two negative associations with the name Pearl that have surfaced in the last year or two. Do you connect the name Pearl with anything ā€œbad?ā€

  • Yes, I have negative associations with the name Pearl.
  • No, I donā€™t have negative associations with the name Pearl.

Association 1 ā€“ A content creator known as ā€œjust pearly thingsā€ is quite controversial and extreme in her opinions.
Association 2 ā€“ The horror films ā€œXā€ and ā€œPearlā€

It is especially fascinating to me, because I feel like the name Pearl was just getting noticed more. I wonder if the aforementioned associations will affect how popular Pearl can get.

Iā€™ve never even heard of those associations, so I think maybe itā€™s a niche thing? Similar to [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f] being a horror movie, but it still being a well used name? I think [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] is cute and vintage, maybe a bit country-western a lĆ  [name_f]Minnie[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] which is my only association outside of actual pearls

though I have heard it used as a euphemism for the clitoris
