A long poll thread on the topic of short lists vs. long lists vs. the ever elusive medium list!
Not particularly talking about themed lists, for example, I might have a “sisters for Vision, Favor, and Merit” list, but I’m specifically referring to comprehensive lists that are not themed/created with a specific topic in mind. And as always, if your preferred answer to these questions isn’t on here, please share and @ me!

What list lengths do you keep?

  • Just a “short list”
  • Just a “short” and “long” list
  • A “short,” “medium,” and “long” list
  • More than this (please share!)
0 voters

How many names are on your short list (not a cumulative number, for example: if my boys had 7 and my girls had 7, I wouldn’t reply with 10-15, I’d say 5-10) / what would you consider a short list to be?

  • 5
  • 5-10
  • 10-15
  • 15-25
  • 25+
  • My short list doesn’t actually have anything to do with being short, it’s just my ultimate favorites
0 voters

How many names are on your medium list?

  • 5-10
  • 10-15
  • 15-25
  • 25-40
  • 40+
  • I don’t keep a medium list
0 voters

How many names are on your long list?

  • 15-25
  • 25-40
  • 40-55
  • 55-75
  • 75-100
  • 100+
  • I literally don’t keep a count for this list
  • I don’t have a long list
0 voters

What makes up the names on your short list?

  • My all-time favorites that have been on my list for a long time
  • My absolute favorite names of the moment
  • A mix of all-time favorites and current favorites
  • Names both my partner and I like
0 voters

Do you keep guilty pleasure or middle only names on your short list?

  • Yes, I have both GP and “middle only” names on my short list
  • I only have “middle only” names on my short list
  • I only have GP names on my short list
  • My short list is exclusively for names I would use as firsts
0 voters

What makes up the names on your medium list?

  • Names I’ve liked for a long time, but aren’t my very top favorites
  • My favorite names at the moment that aren’t all-time favorites
  • A mix of all-time favorites and current favorites
  • I don’t keep a “medium list”
0 voters

Do you keep guilty pleasure our middle only names on your medium list?

  • Yes, both GP and “middle only” names are on this list
  • Only “middle only” names
  • Only GP names
  • My medium list has neither of these
0 voters

What makes up the names on your long list?

  • Every single name I have ever liked in my whole life
  • Every single name I currently like
  • Every name I even sort-of like
  • Every name I love, even GPs
  • All of my favorite names and family names
  • I don’t keep a long list
0 voters

How often do you update your lists?

  • Every day
  • Every week
  • Every other week
  • Once a month
  • Once every three months
  • Once every six months
  • Once a year
  • Whenever I have a change in my names
0 voters

Do you include family names on your lists?

  • Yes, they are included in my medium/long list
  • Yes, they are included in my short list
  • Yes, but only if I really love them and would use them even if they weren’t family names
  • No, I keep them separate
  • A mix of these things
0 voters

Does your long list include the names on your short list?

  • Yes
  • No

I tend to keep themed lists in addition to short, long and medium lists.

I keep track of my changing faves multiple times a week, but I don’t really edit my lists more than a few times a year. [name_f]My[/name_f] changing preferences become new lists/spreadsheets.

my medium list pretty much includes every name that I like but don’t love but could love if I have a partner who absolutely loves the name

@Etymology Ooh, interesting on the updating bit! If you don’t mine me asking then, where do you keep track of your full short/medium/long lists? Is it just separate spreadsheets, are they in a notes section, a listography? This topic will forever interest me!

@SparkleNinja18 Oh, this makes so much sense! I’ve never thought of it that way…so smart! I will have to keep this in mind!!

I am a strong believer in not anglicizing name spellings, so my personal preference is [name_f]Niamh[/name_f], but if I had to choose which would be easier to wear or pronounce in an English-speaking country, it would be [name_f]Neve[/name_f]!

Is the flow Drummer Judah at all acceptable?

  • Yes, of course!
  • No, thank you.

I have only the long list, no short list…

Short list is for names I would realistically use; medium list is for names I’d use under specific circumstances, long list is for name so sort of like or have liked in the past, I rarely update it anymore though.

@lateaugust, I very much agree with what [name_m]Theo[/name_m] said!

@seawillow For some reason, I’m getting tongue-tied and saying “Jrummer Judah” instead of “Dummer Judah,” so I said no. That could very much only be a me thing, though!
