“Of course I could teach you,” she said, jumping down from the table with a grace clumsy little me could only dream of, and for a moment there must have been a ridiculous beam of hope in my eyes. I wasn’t completely without talent! I could learn to dance like she does! “I could teach a gorilla,” she added with a frown, “so yeah, I think I could teach you. It’s not rocket science.”
Before I knew what was happening she was holding my right hand in her left, her right tightly placed behind my shoulder, pulling me close. Never before had I been this close to the girl I adore. Never before had we touched. Unable to think about anything else, I hardly noticed her moving the both of us, swirling me around like it’s nothing. When we came to a halt I felt like dancing with her was all I had ever done in my life, and yet it hadn’t been long enough. It felt like we were one.
And yet she let go like it was nothing, leaving me flustered and staring. “See? Not rocket science.”
I remember her picking up her bag, turning even that mundane of a movement into a work of art with her body. “Same place, same time, next week,” she said before she left. And that was when, for the first time ever, she smiled at me. “I’ll teach you alright, gorilla kid!”

[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t Wait Up

“[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t wait up!” The six year old girl yelled at her friend before running away, laughing, as her friend ran after her with a grin.
“[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t wait up!” The eleven year old boy called to his friend as his mom’s car pulled up to pick him up from school, his friend waving goodbye.
“[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t wait up!” The fourteen year olds grinned at each other as they walked up the steps to the high school on their first day.
“[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t… wait… up…” The seventeen year old boy panted, blood gushing from his side, staining the girl’s leggings as she knelt by his side.
“[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t wait up.” She whispered, before walking away from the fresh grave and her best friend.

[name_u]Kendall[/name_u] the Great . . . Gamer

[name_u]Kendall[/name_u]'s used to playing someone she’s not. Or, more accurately, she’s used to others playing her as someone she’s not. Used to having her control ripped from her mind, forced to speak and act however the entity controlling her chooses. In her world, the land within the shadows of the human world, that’s what those in power do – use the physical talents of those less used to resisting control to fight the petty wars between their territories right under the noses of the humans. Talents like [name_u]Kendall[/name_u]'s supernatural agility and strength.

That’s in the past, though. She escaped. Now she attends a middle school where she’s made friends, both with humans and with others who are secretly like her. And her favorite pastime is controlling characters who aren’t struggling to escape, who feel real without being real. She’s in control, now, and knows what it’s like to act and move in another’s body under her control.

And occasionally she finds herself accidentally slipping into others, their minds, controlling them. Outside of the games where there are no fears of truly destroying hundreds of lives. She’s cultivated the gift of will existing alongside her other talents. And when a battle from her old life bleeds into the human world, threatening her new home, she may need to exercise this gift even as she remembers what it’s like to be as helpless as those she now controls.

She tells herself it’s just another game.

And Then I Felt Nothing

My feet raced past every memory I had ever lived. They’re right behind you. Soon you’ll be a memory, a voice whispered into my ear. I shook off the pain in my gut, daring to look back. Two white men on horseback chased me, scowling and shouting. The wind whipped at my face as I ran barefoot down the cobblestone path. The forest! I thought, as a carpet of trees appeared at the bottom of the hill. With the very last in me, I soared down the hillside, panting, my body a heavy weight on my soul. Suddenly, a thing like a biting snake latched around my ankle. My body slammed onto the rock beneath me as I caught a glance of the whip that had stopped me. A pain erupted through my body as a heavy boot came down on my back. And then I felt nothing.
