Too many Lily/Lilly’s?

Is [name_f]Lily[/name_f]/Lilly too overused? Or just a classic? [name_f]My[/name_f] middle name is [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] after my great grandmother and I have always liked my middle name, I even lied in kindergarten and told my friends it was my real first name. I’m just worried that it’s too overused to use it now?

I have 2 little cousins named [name_f]Lily[/name_f] [name_u]Lou[/name_u] and [name_f]Lily[/name_f] [name_f]Veronica[/name_f] . And while I think [name_f]Lily[/name_f] is popular [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] is beautiful and a little less popular

I know 1 [name_f]Lily[/name_f] (1) and 1 [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] (approx. 10). Both live in different areas in the US. I’ve not heard of any others.

I only know of two young Lilys, and one [name_f]Lillian[/name_f], so I’d say it’s just classic

I know a few adult Lilys. It’s a beautiful name. Also love [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]. I’d categorise them as classics.

I know a Lilly (full name), 2 Lillian’s (Lily) and a Liliana (Lilly). To me, the name does lose it’s charm after knowing so many Lily’s/Lilly’s especially after one of them ended up being a toxic friend. I do think it’s a sweet name, just nms.

I think it’s too overused/common, but there are some great variations of it! I love [name_f]Lilia[/name_f], [name_f]Tigerlily[/name_f] and [name_f]Lilias[/name_f]. There’s also [name_f]Calla[/name_f] (type of lily), [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] (means lily), [name_f]Lilla[/name_f] (pronounced [name_f]Lil[/name_f]-la), and [name_f]Lilac[/name_f] (similar to lily). Lilith is another one!

Lily is my favorite of its variants. I love its sweet simplicity and the flower imagery I get. Also, I know very few Lilys.

I still feel like [name_f]Lily[/name_f] is super refreshing! I personally have met maybe one… if any. As a first name I think it’s still usable 100%. I consider it truly timeless in all its variations! (I live in Midwest USA for reference)

I know at least 10 [name_f]Lily[/name_f]/Lillys of all different ages and while I think it’s lost a little of it’s sparkle, it’s still a name I enjoy hearing when I’m introduced to a new [name_f]Lily[/name_f]/Lilly. Popular, but timeless - I would put it in the same realm as names like [name_f]Kate[/name_f], [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], [name_f]Emma[/name_f] etc.

I know a [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] and a [name_f]Lilian[/name_f] between the ages 18 and 20 (both called [name_f]Lily[/name_f]), a 13 or 14 year old [name_f]Lillianna[/name_f] (called [name_f]Lilly[/name_f]), and a one year old [name_f]Liliana[/name_f] (called [name_f]Lili[/name_f] - pronounced [name_f]Lily[/name_f]). So while I don’t know anyone that has [name_f]Lily[/name_f] as their full name, all the different variations that use [name_f]Lily[/name_f] as a nickname adds to how popular [name_f]Lily[/name_f] really is. But it’s not one of those names where I would think “ugh, another one” if someone were to introduce themselves or their daughter to me as [name_f]Lily[/name_f]. It’s still a pretty name.

It’s overused to me. I was so shocked by the US top 1,000 for 2019 that I made a post called “The Lil- Era”

But overused can still be classic, imo. If you love it, I say use it!

As as adult [name_f]Lily[/name_f], I have never met another [name_f]Lily[/name_f]. And I’ve worked with kids before. I’ve met one [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] who was sometimes called [name_f]Lily[/name_f] (although I only met her maybe three times), and went to high school with a [name_f]Lilianna[/name_f]. Her older sister calls her [name_f]Lily[/name_f], but everyone called her by her full name at school.

I love the name [name_f]Lily[/name_f]! Here in the UK it’s incredibly popular though, my kids know two Lilys each. I would say it’s a classic though. [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] is less popular here, but more popular in [name_u]America[/name_u]. Maybe opt for [name_f]Liliya[/name_f], the Russian form, if you don’t love the constant popularity?

I still think [name_f]Lily[/name_f] is really pretty, despite being common! [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] is a lovely alternative.

I know several little Lilys and I’d say it was popular but not oversaturated

I think [name_f]Lily[/name_f] is just classic, not overused.

Lily is very pretty and it certainly feels traditional, if not quite classic to me.

However, it is very, very popular for young girls where I live (central [name_f]England[/name_f]). I’d say it’s tied with [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and [name_f]Freya[/name_f] for the most common girls’ names I’m hearing at the moment.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that even if [name_f]Lily[/name_f] itself weren’t popular, its sounds are. The double L found in [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Layla[/name_f], [name_f]Lilah[/name_f], [name_f]Lola[/name_f], [name_f]Lillian[/name_f], etc. plus the -ee ending sound of names like [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], [name_u]Ruby[/name_u], [name_f]Sadie[/name_f], etc.
