Triplet names

I like it when there’s a theme, but not similarly phonetically sounding .

For instance, I use to love [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f], [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] and [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] together for twins - [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] and [name_f]Eve[/name_f] (after romantic literally figures - Titanic/[name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m]/Bible).

But at the moment they’d be:

  • [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] [name_u]Quinn[/name_u], [name_f]Anna[/name_f] [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] [ah-nah] and [name_f]Lacey[/name_f] [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f]
  • [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] [name_m]Scott[/name_m], [name_m]Julian[/name_m] [name_u]Grey[/name_u] and [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] _________

I was one of 7 sets of triplets when I went to primary school. The sets I knew were:

[name_f]Heather[/name_f], [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] and [name_f]Hailey[/name_f] (fraternal girls) - although their older brother’s name is [name_m]Henry[/name_m] and the parents also have names starting with H, so it kinda fits.

[name_f]Amy[/name_f], [name_f]Kate[/name_f] and [name_u]Lisa[/name_u] (identical girls) - all short and sweet.

[name_m]Peter[/name_m], [name_m]Adam[/name_m] and [name_m]Charles[/name_m] (fraternal boys) - all classic names.

[name_f]Hannah[/name_f], [name_f]Claire[/name_f] (me) and [name_u]Michael[/name_u] (fraternal mixed gender) - all common names

[name_f]Jocelyn[/name_f], [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] and [name_f]Ellen[/name_f] (fraternal mixed gender)

[name_m]Stuart[/name_m], [name_m]Mitchell[/name_m], [name_m]Hamish[/name_m] (fraternal boys)

[name_u]Sierra[/name_u], [name_u]Skye[/name_u], [name_f]Susan[/name_f] (fraternal girls) - all same letter but distinct.

I don’t like matchy triplet names at all and in fact don’t like the same initials amongst siblings that much either.

[name_f]Juliette[/name_f] [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] [name_f]Verity[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] [name_f]Arabella[/name_f] [name_f]Clara[/name_f]
[name_f]Hermione[/name_f] [name_f]Evanna[/name_f] [name_f]Felicity[/name_f]

[name_f]Etta[/name_f], [name_f]Rosa[/name_f] & [name_f]Mia[/name_f]

Triplet girls: [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], [name_f]Ethel[/name_f] and [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]
Triplet boys: [name_m]Ernest[/name_m], [name_m]Walter[/name_m] and [name_m]Fred[/name_m]

Considering how often people mix up siblings names anyway, giving triplets similar names is not something I would do. I personally think it is a bit like saying: okay, you were all born at the same time, therefore, you are all the same person. I respect that other people like the matchy names, but I for one do not. I think using middle names to honour the fact they are siblings and triplets can be nice (e.g: ______ Clemency, ________ Noble and _______ Prudence or ________ Thalassa, __________ Morwenna and _________ Oceana, etc.) but I prefer the names to stand alone most of the time. Siblings already share so much: I would personally like my children’s names to not have obvious ties to their siblings, apart from the fact they will likely be honorific in some shape or form.

Presuming every set has no overlap:
G/G/G: Momo Flora, Ducky Maude and Nanetta Yuki ‘Mo, Dee and Nan’
B/B/B: Dossie Roland, Humphrey Enzo and Morris Basil ‘Doss, Hum and Morrie’
B/B/G: Yuma Bloom, Amzi Dove and Dagny Vesper ‘Yumi, Zee and Dan’
G/G/B: Domino Essie, Josepha Honey and Gerald Franklin ‘Dom, Posy and Gerry’

I know fraternal quads. They’re [name_m]Eric[/name_m], [name_u]Ryan[/name_u], [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] and [name_f]Lauren[/name_f]. I don’t know their middle names but even with distinctly different names people still call them “the quads” like they’re a single entity. Teachers have said I have two of the quads in my class which always struck me as sad because they never bothered to learn who was who.

I would name them as they were just sisters. I hate those names for triplets or twins that are similar. Of course I would have a [name_f]Maria[/name_f] (as I do), a [name_f]Daniella[/name_f] (as I’d like to have) and [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]

I know a couple sets of triplets.

[name_u]Sam[/name_u], [name_u]Courtney[/name_u], and [name_f]Katrina[/name_f]: They were born in 2003, two girls and a boy. They have an older sister named [name_f]Christine[/name_f] so when they were born, each family member chose a name. Their dad chose [name_u]Sam[/name_u], mom chose [name_u]Courtney[/name_u], and [name_f]Christine[/name_f] chose [name_f]Katrina[/name_f]. Once they got older, their mom had a very difficult time with the three girls’ names being so similar.

[name_f]Marcell[/name_f], [name_m]Anthony[/name_m], and [name_f]Cindy[/name_f]: They were born in 1998 or 1999, two boys and a girl. They don’t have middle names. According to the one I talked to, they have a very complicated Croatian surname so their parents decided it would be easier to just choose three names.

[name_u]Alex[/name_u], [name_f]Amber[/name_f], and [name_u]Ashley[/name_u]: They’re currently seniors in high school, two girls and a boy. I don’t know them very well but I know that [name_u]Alex[/name_u] is his full name. I don’t like that their names all start with A but at least they have different sounds.

[name_u]Kendall[/name_u], [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u], and [name_f]Kenley[/name_f]: I don’t know these girls personally but I heard about them from someone I used to dance with. Their names are way too close!

If I had triplet girls, they would be [name_f]Lila[/name_f], [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], and [name_f]Iris[/name_f].

I actually kind of like the sibset of [name_f]Lola[/name_f], [name_f]Lilly[/name_f] and [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]! Matchy, but still nice on the whole. I don’t know any triplets personally, but if I had a set of all girl triplets I would name them [name_f]Annabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Edith[/name_f], and [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] with a recurring ‘th’ sound.

I like the names [name_f]Heidi[/name_f], [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] and [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] for triplets

I’ve known 3 sets of triplets.

[name_u]Harper[/name_u] [name_f]Anne[/name_f], [name_u]Hunter[/name_u] [name_m]Sean[/name_m] and [name_f]Heather[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f]. I don’t like their sibling set just because it’s too matchy for me, personally. I don’t know why their parents took it one step further and gave both the girls a middle name beginning with A, either. It’s too overbearing imo.

[name_f]Farah[/name_f] [name_f]Lela[/name_f], [name_f]Yasmin[/name_f] [name_f]Adira[/name_f] and [name_m]Syed[/name_m] Kaseem are another set I know! They’re good friends of mine and I love their names a lot, actually.

[name_f]Jenna[/name_f], [name_u]Evan[/name_u] and [name_m]Jason[/name_m] are a set I knew a few years ago. I never knew their middle names but the fact that two of their names begin with J and then [name_u]Evan[/name_u] is on his own with an E name just seems a bit mismatched and disproportionate imo.

I’m expecting twins at the moment and even though I’d like their names to have a special connection, I don’t think I want them to be clearly linked. Maybe [name_m]Forrest[/name_m] and [name_u]Oakley[/name_u] if the twins are both boys. Maybe [name_f]Fjord[/name_f] and [name_f]Honey[/name_f] if they’re both girls. I need to put more thought into it though before they’re born lol!

I know 2 sets of triplets, (one was actually a set of quadruplets but the one passed away at birth)

One is [name_u]Ashley[/name_u], [name_f]Savannah[/name_f] and Bij@n
the other set is [name_m]Christopher[/name_m], [name_m]Matthew[/name_m], [name_f]Leah[/name_f] (and I believe the brother that passed was [name_u]Seth[/name_u] or [name_m]Steven[/name_m])

I know alot of matchy twin sets though. I’ve never been a fan of the matching, though same first letter doesn’t bother me as many sibsets in real life share a first letter. The rhyming things does bother me though.

[name_f]Lola[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f], and [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] is too much for me. I may do a subtle theme, or do alliteration if I felt like the names were unique enough (they would have to have a little more substance than two syllable names). If it were me, I would just do my three favorite names.

[name_f]Lana[/name_f], [name_f]Faline[/name_f] and [name_m]Vero[/name_m] (no theme)
[name_f]Lana[/name_f], [name_f]Rhea[/name_f], and [name_f]Gaia[/name_f] (a theme with the soft “a” at the end)
[name_f]Athena[/name_f], [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], and [name_f]Annika[/name_f] (alliteration, and the same ending, but for some reason I feel like they are all different enough)
[name_f]Francesca[/name_f] ("[name_u]Frankie[/name_u]"), [name_f]Poppy[/name_f], and [name_u]Vale[/name_u] ([name_f]Francesca[/name_f] after San [name_m]Francisco[/name_m], [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] for state flower of CA, and [name_u]Vale[/name_u] for Bridalveil Falls in [name_m]Yosemite[/name_m])
[name_f]Florence[/name_f], [name_m]David[/name_m], [name_m]Leo[/name_m] (after [name_f]Florence[/name_f], [name_f]Italy[/name_f])

I love the idea of nature names, but I am not a huge fan of flat out english word names ever often… but these are some that I do like…

[name_u]River[/name_u] (b), [name_f]Gaia[/name_f], [name_f]Dawn[/name_f], [name_u]Vale[/name_u], [name_m]Ansel[/name_m], [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m], [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] ("[name_f]Rosie[/name_f]"), [name_f]Florence[/name_f] or [name_f]Flora[/name_f], [name_f]Soleil[/name_f]

Ooooh triplet names would be hard! I agree with most people, I dont like matchy names. I have been known to confuse my daughter’s name with my cat’s name, so I can only imagine what would happen with three babies with similar names. Or even a family theme… shudder. If my name, my daughter’s, my husband’s AND triplet babies names all started with the same letter, they would NEVER get called by their correct name.
I like the idea of a subtle theme, but I would probably only do that with middles.
I like:
[name_f]Astrid[/name_f] [name_f]Valentina[/name_f], [name_f]Romilly[/name_f] [name_f]Arianwen[/name_f] and [name_f]Cosima[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f]/[name_f]Cosima[/name_f] [name_f]Wednesday[/name_f]
“[name_u]Ari[/name_u]” “[name_u]Romy[/name_u]” “[name_m]Kitt[/name_m]/[name_f]Immy[/name_f]”

I think names with a common idea or theme can be cute for multiples, as long as it’s not over the top! I actually like the “[name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Lola[/name_f], and [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]” idea, but I bet in a few years their parents will regret how similar their names are–very cute for babies, not so cute for young demanding children or adults. I agree with a lot of the other posters on here that having themed middle names is a better idea. But it is definitely important that the names go together in some way since people will say them together a lot.

I can’t really decide on what names I would use for triplets and twins, but here are some of my ideas in case I ever had them. (You’ll notice that my favorite name is [name_f]Fiona[/name_f]!)

3 girls:
Probably [name_f]Fiona[/name_f], [name_f]Emma[/name_f], and [name_f]Lia[/name_f]. All have an “a” ending and are short and easy to pronounce. Maybe [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] [name_u]Artemis[/name_u], [name_f]Emma[/name_f] [name_f]Athena[/name_f], and [name_f]Lia[/name_f] [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f], so they would all have [name_f]Goddess[/name_f] middle names. (Undecided on that part.) Although those names may still be too similar for me.

2 girls and 1 boy:
This is easier. Probably [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] [name_f]Athena[/name_f], [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] [name_u]Artemis[/name_u], & [name_u]Skyler[/name_u] [name_m]Apollo[/name_m]. ("[name_f]Fiona[/name_f], [name_f]Emma[/name_f], and [name_u]Sky[/name_u].") Once again, middle names would have a common theme but the first names are distinct from each other.

Twin boys:
[name_u]Skyler[/name_u] and [name_u]Flynn[/name_u]. Both first names are a little unusual and have a “y” in the middle so it looks like a pair, but they don’t really sound similar. Would probably use family names for middle names, so [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] [name_m]Jeffrey[/name_m] and [name_u]Skyler[/name_u] [name_m]Edward[/name_m]. My girlfriend really likes the name “[name_m]Felix[/name_m],” so it could become [name_m]Felix[/name_m] and [name_u]Flynn[/name_u], but that sounds a little too matchy for me (although admittedly cute).

Twin girls:
[name_f]Fiona[/name_f] and [name_f]Emilia[/name_f]. Probably [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] [name_f]Jasmine[/name_f] and [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] [name_f]Belle[/name_f]. (First names are distinct from each other but both end in “a,” and the middle names are both names I really love but are coincidentally also my favorite Disney princesses, haha). Alternatively, I would do [name_f]Emma[/name_f] and [name_f]Lia[/name_f] since it’s such a simple, yet pretty pairing. But it might be a bit boring for my taste.

No idea what I would do with 3 boys, or 2 boys and 1 girl!

I quite like a letter theme and a long middle name thats more unusual
[name_f]Martha[/name_f] [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f]
[name_f]Margot[/name_f] [name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f]
[name_f]Maeve[/name_f] [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f]

From my experience, no matter how well they ‘‘go together’’ in theory, multiples’ names are said together so often that they eventually seem to fit perfectly.

I would just have chosen 3 names I liked the most.

I know sister named [name_f]Lola[/name_f] and [name_f]Lily[/name_f] and they never seemed overly similar, so [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] as a third sister seems plausible to me. I wouldn’t personally use such similar names though.

I actually adore [name_f]Lola[/name_f], [name_f]Lilly[/name_f] and [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] together! Matchy sibsets are my guilty pleasure to be honest.

If I got to choose names for triplets by myself;

[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Marigold[/name_f], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] [name_f]Claire[/name_f] and [name_f]Martha[/name_f] [name_f]Florence[/name_f]

or; [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] [name_f]Marigold[/name_f], [name_f]Lottie[/name_f] [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f] and [name_f]Honey[/name_f] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]

but considering other factors:

[name_f]Zara[/name_f] [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f], [name_f]Freya[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] [name_f]Lily[/name_f]

I’d use a theme based on meaning such as [name_f]Clara[/name_f], [name_f]Lucia[/name_f], and [name_f]Helena[/name_f] (light) or [name_m]Jonah[/name_m], [name_f]Paloma[/name_f] (or [name_f]Salome[/name_f]), and [name_u]Columba[/name_u] (dove/peace).
Other possibilities:
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f]/[name_m]Felix[/name_m], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], and [name_m]Asher[/name_m] (happiness)
[name_m]Leo[/name_m], [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], and [name_m]Fox[/name_m] (animals)

I think a similar background is good. If you choose one Japanese, one English, and one [name_m]French[/name_m] name, it sounds a bit dissonant–no matter how beautiful the names. something like:

[name_f]Persephone[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Calliope[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]
[name_f]Ariadne[/name_f] [name_f]Eve[/name_f]

OR

[name_f]Imogen[/name_f] [name_f]Lily[/name_f]
[name_f]Isla[/name_f] [name_u]Juniper[/name_u]
[name_f]Catherine[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f]

are nice!
