Trying to find a boy name we love!

Continuing from my previous post……

“Have you come up with any boy names?”

Hubby is very intentional at wanting to figure out something. So yesterday we read through all of the suggestions I’ve got already and then read through several lists on the Nameberry site. From his comments I wrote his shortlist of what he’d consider “guilty pleasures” and names that jumped out to him so we are starting somewhere at least.

Ace- with this he mentioned it’s kinda too bad we unintentionally created the biblical name theme. We do feel we need to keep up with it but said if we hadn’t he’d really like this. He likes the idea of something short…. The one syllable really draws him

Adriel

Psalm

Ezra- he likes this but feels it’s too popular

Micah- he likes this but feels it’s too popular

Ransom- this is always one he mentions with pregnancy but he doesn’t see it as that usable

Benjamin- this he likes but it’s ruled out most likely because he has several cousins already with this name

Gabriel- likes this but the inevitable “Gabe” turns him off as we already have a “Jabe”. Which is the unfortunate fate for Abel and Abram.

Judah- likes this but there are a few unfortunate negative associations

Shiloh- now feels it sounds too much like a girls name. And doesn’t want to be mistaken as a Brad Pitt or Angelina fanatic

Ezekiel

Thaddeus- says he likes it but he’d never use it

One thing he did ask was “Are there any names for boys like “Promise”. We did look at some Nameberry lists of word names and virtue names but nothing jumped out.

Any thoughts? Ideas? Opinions?

I really like Prosper for you! It has the same sounds and vibe as Promise, and I think the similarity to Jasper/Casper makes it sound more “name-y”

Other suggestions:
Gideon
Boaz
Brave
Tobias
Revere
Merit
Valor
Noble

I checked your previous post and I never would’ve noticed the biblical theme unless I sat down and really thought about it! Maybe if none of these names feel right for you, you could continue the theme by putting the biblical name in the middle spot instead? Ace Ezekiel, for example!

That said, let’s look at your list! It seems that Adriel, Psalm, Shiloh and Ezekiel are the ones you don’t have any troubles with, and I love Shiloh with your other children’s names! I think that, like G1deon, it’s a nice middle ground between the traditional and popular Es.ther, and the really out-there J@bez. I also really like Adriel. While it’s very unique, its similarity to the popular Adrian makes it very usable!

I think Psalm may seem a little outlandish next to your other kids. Ezekiel is fine, but I just prefer Shiloh and Adriel with your other children!

Have you considered a biblical name with the nickname Ace? Asher comes to mind, but that one is very popular. I’m not religious myself so I don’t know that many biblical names, but it could be something to think about!

Another suggestion that came to mind was Shepherd, which is vaguely biblical because of Jesus being called/depicted as a shepherd often. It’s a little more subtle but it definitely works!

You could also do international variations of the “basic” biblical names. For example Mathias or Matteo instead of Matthew, Jack or Zane instead of John, Luca instead of Luke, etcetera. Or what about names whose meaning is religious? One example is Ari which means “lion of God”, but there are so many names with Christian connections even if they aren’t in the bible!

For short names, since you mentioned your husband likes them, Zair and Lael come to mind (both biblical). As for out-there virtue names like Promise that work on boys, perhaps Honor, Justice, Brave, True?

How about Pax, Credence / Creed , Salem, Arrow, Journey or Ever ?

From your list I really love Psalm and Shiloh!

I just wanted to add Oath! One syllable snappy name like [name_u]Ace[/name_u], with the meaning of [name_u]Promise[/name_u].

Apologies, I haven’t seen your other post. Have you considered using [name_u]Asa[/name_u]?

[name_u]Jonah[/name_u]
[name_u]Jude[/name_u]
[name_u]Noam[/name_u]
[name_m]Tobias[/name_m]
[name_m]Cyrus[/name_m]
[name_m]Silas[/name_m]
[name_u]Daniel[/name_u]
[name_m]Darius[/name_m]

Oh gosh such wonderful names!

So I did notice the biblical theme straightaway which is why I felt that [name_u]Ace[/name_u] wouldn’t work. However I absolutely love the berries suggestions of [name_m]Prosper[/name_m] & Oath. Especially Oath honestly Oath is just beyond cool. Other ideas could be [name_u]Noble[/name_u], [name_u]Brave[/name_u], [name_u]Valor[/name_u], [name_u]Chapel[/name_u], [name_m]Stone[/name_m], Hymn, [name_u]Saint[/name_u] or [name_f]Virtue[/name_f]. From your list I think [name_u]Psalm[/name_u] is lovely and follows this whole [name_u]Christian[/name_u] word idea.

I love [name_u]Ezra[/name_u] & [name_u]Micah[/name_u] they are gorgeous but yes they are relatively popular options. I think [name_m]Ezekiel[/name_m] is a fab idea has [name_u]Ezra[/name_u] vibes but not popular. Similarly I think [name_m]Malachi[/name_m] has similar vibes to [name_u]Micah[/name_u] but not on peoples radars as much.

[name_u]Thaddeus[/name_u], [name_u]Judah[/name_u], [name_m]Ransom[/name_m] & [name_u]Gabriel[/name_u] I would remove from this list as the hangups/doubts surrounding these will never make them click. You could go [name_m]Absalom[/name_m], [name_m]Erasmus[/name_m] (Saint name), [name_m]Tobias[/name_m], [name_u]Maverick[/name_u] & [name_m]Gideon[/name_m] as alternatives.

[name_u]Benjamin[/name_u] is a solid classic name I feel like [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m] is a great alternative or maybe [name_m]Reuben[/name_m] to achieve that [name_m]Ben[/name_m] nickname which may appeal to you.

[name_m]Adriel[/name_m] is very cool I wanted to also suggest [name_m]Hadriel[/name_m] and [name_u]Azariah[/name_u].

Finally [name_u]Shiloh[/name_u] is gorgeous such a peaceful angelic option that feels modern and fashionable. I’m a massive fan of [name_u]Shiloh[/name_u]! Names that feel similar to [name_u]Shiloh[/name_u] and could work are [name_u]Jericho[/name_u], [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] (also fits in with the cool [name_u]Christian[/name_u] word name idea) and [name_m]Hosea[/name_m].

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] my rambling helps in some way!

[name_u]Ace[/name_u] is pretty cool, sporty and energetic. Would [name_u]Asa[/name_u] ‘Ace’ work?

[name_m]Adriel[/name_m] - intriguing and distinctive

[name_u]Psalm[/name_u] - I like it as a middle

[name_u]Ezra[/name_u] - warm, friendly and bright. It is popular though. Maybe [name_m]Ozias[/name_m], [name_u]Evren[/name_u], [name_u]Elias[/name_u], [name_u]Ezri[/name_u]?

[name_u]Micah[/name_u] - bright and sharp and sweet. I’ve never actually met one

[name_u]Benjamin[/name_u] - nice enough, but it doesn’t seem right for you

[name_u]Gabriel[/name_u] - a lovely name, charming and cool. Not sure [name_m]Gabe[/name_m] and [name_m]Jabe[/name_m] work though. Would Raphael/Rafe work?

[name_u]Judah[/name_u] - a cool, charming name, but again, doesn’t seem right for you

[name_u]Shiloh[/name_u] - lovely name, bright and cool, but doesn’t seem right for you. [name_m]Solomon[/name_m], perhaps? [name_u]Or[/name_u] [name_u]Sol[/name_u] if you want a short name?

[name_m]Ezekiel[/name_m] - I always find this one a bit - I don’t know - slimy, cruel - no idea why? [name_u]Zeke[/name_u] is okay though

[name_u]Thaddeus[/name_u] - I enjoy this - maybe [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] as a similar, but less GP option?

Some ideas…

[name_m]Gilbert[/name_m]
Fortitude/Ford
[name_m]Canaan[/name_m]
[name_m]Amias[/name_m]

Suggesting [name_u]Asa[/name_u] with possible nn [name_u]Ace[/name_u]. [name_u]Asa[/name_u] from
1 Kings 15.

[name_u]Oak[/name_u] is another that I love with its imagery from [name_m]Isaiah[/name_m] 61:3.

I really like [name_u]Ace[/name_u], [name_u]Micah[/name_u], [name_m]Ransom[/name_m] and [name_u]Shiloh[/name_u] for you

I think [name_u]Ace[/name_u] is such a great name, you shouldn’t be stopped because you feel like it doesn’t go with a theme, most people won’t even make the connection of those names being religious or won’t even think of his siblings names when thinking about him
I do agree with the previous suggestion it that’s something that bothers you, [name_u]Asa[/name_u] “ace” is just as adorable

I don’t think [name_u]Micah[/name_u] is too popular but I guess that depends a lot

[name_m]Ransom[/name_m] is more out there but I don’t think it’s unusable, I think it’s a very cute name

[name_u]Shiloh[/name_u] I don’t see as a feminine name, it’s like [name_u]Micah[/name_u], I like both of these better on boys
And I don’t associate to brangelina

I forgot… I really like psalm as well!

[name_m]Patrick[/name_m]
[name_u]Quentin[/name_u]
[name_m]Silvester[/name_m]
[name_m]Wilfred[/name_m]

[name_f]My[/name_f] first thought of alternatives to [name_u]Ace[/name_u] names were
[name_u]Aja[/name_u] / [name_u]Asa[/name_u]
[name_u]Reeve[/name_u]
[name_m]Saul[/name_m] (demanded/ prayed for)

[name_u]Ezra[/name_u] could alternatively be
[name_u]Ira[/name_u]
[name_m]Ivor[/name_m]
[name_m]Isaiah[/name_m]
[name_u]Zeke[/name_u]

Maybe a bit tenuous, but you could use Ace as a nickname for Isaac. Or you might like Zac or Ike as nicknames for Isaac.

Ezekiel is a good fit, and you could use Zeke as a nickname.

Ezra and Micah are not popular if you consider naming across English speaking countries or just the United States over time, or even over the past five to ten years. But I guess people can have different interpretations of what popular is.

You could use Bram as a nickname for Abram rather than Abe.

As suggested above, would you consider Shepherd as like a virtue name? It has a Christian faith connection.

I would add that I think Victor could be considered a name like Promise as it refers to victory/victorious. You could make a faith connection (e.g. Jesus’s victory over sin/death) and having a fourth child is a victory of your courage and love. It’s also a very international name.

The suggestion above of Malachi (nn Kai) is a good one - Kai Victor :ok_hand::v:
