Twila / Twyla

In reference to this post:

What are your thoughts about the name [name]Twila[/name]? I was very surprised to see on the above post that some of the people the poster spoke with thought it was ‘backwoods’ or ‘ethnic’, since that’s not how I see it at all. [name]Just[/name] wondered what everyone else thought?

That was my post…it’s crazy how people either love the name or hate it. Those who hate it seem to think it’s a country or ethnic name. We’re actually leaning toward the name again. I emailed a couple of people with the name and they really love it. One is a really creative girl who runs this blog: http://twilasvintage.fatcow.com/. She’s totally normal, cute and artistic. The other person I emailed was a senior in high school and she adores it too. They both told me that they have run into people who can’t pronounce their name or feel it’s country or ethic, but mentioned that those who love it far outweigh those who don’t. We love the name and know our daughter will be raised in an artistic/urban environment, so the country statements shouldn’t apply, and if it is seen as ethnic, so what? I see it as a beautiful vintage name.

Any thoughts?

I like the name, I think it’s very pretty and exotic sounding! I live in the UK and have never heard of the name outside of these message boards so no ‘country’ or ‘ethnic’ associations. But even if people do have those associations, they’re not exactly the worst in the world!

It reminds me of the word Twilight and gives me a slighty artistic, hippie feel.

Best of luck!

I think the spelling [name]Twyla[/name] is better and more phonetic. Overall, this name isn’t bad, but it’s not great either. It sounds like a witch or magic name to me, like from [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] or something. I wouldn’t use it [name]IMO[/name].

I quite like [name]Twila[/name]/[name]Twyla[/name]. It’s a rarely chosen gem. For me, it is a name of artistic beauty due to its association with American dancer and choreographer, [name]Twyla[/name] Tharp. She was born in [name]Indiana[/name] and named after a woman who won the annual fair contest for “Pig [name]Princess[/name]”. It does have an “exotic” appeal about it but I personally don’t find it “ethnic” or “country” at all. [name]Just[/name] as a point of interest… [name]Twyla[/name] Tharp has siblings named [name]Twanette[/name], [name]Stanley[/name] and [name]Stanford[/name]! It’s a unique and beautiful name! Go for it! All the best!

My grandma’s name is [name]Twilla[/name] Lucielle. She LOVES her name. She’s got it on her license plate. I think it’s cute.

I am partial to the way she spells it. [name]Twyla[/name] or [name]Twila[/name] don’t look as good written down on paper as [name]Twilla[/name] in my opinion.

[name]Twilla[/name] looks like it is pronounced differently than [name]Twila[/name]/[name]Twyla[/name].

I really like the name [name]Twila[/name] (this spelling), it’s beautiful! I don’t like the spelling [name]Twyla[/name] it looks… really awkward.

I agree. My husband prefers [name]Twyla[/name] because he thinks it’ll be easier to pronounce, but to me it seems wrong because we’re taking it from Twilight.
