Ursula - am I crazy?

I am crushing on the name [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] this weekend after seeing it was the name of fashion editor [name_f]Plum[/name_f] Sykes’ daughter. Is it completely unusable?

The fact that it reminds me of The [name_m]Little[/name_m] Mermaid and Friends is a positive association as they’re one of my favourite movies and television shows respectively. But I worry what others will think of the name. It won’t shake it’s image unless people are brave enough to use it and make it more accepted I suppose. Should I take the leap and add her to my list?

What middles would you pair with [name_f]Ursula[/name_f]? Anything in particular you would avoid?

I don’t think you’re crazy. I quite like it, too, it’s really offbeat and has a nice sound. [name_f]Sally[/name_f] could be a cute nickname.
Some middle name ideas:
[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_f]Yvaine[/name_f]
[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_u]Jean[/name_u]
[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_f]Amoret[/name_f]
[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f]
[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_f]Sadie[/name_f]
[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_f]Nell[/name_f]
[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_u]Marian[/name_u]
[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_u]Sorrel[/name_u]

I dislike it. It sounds kind of rough and the “uh” sound in the beggining of a name is not appealing to me. But that’s just my personal style, the name is not unheard of, so if you loke it, put it on the list.
I’d pick a classic and feminine, one syllable mn to balance it out, like [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f].

I don’t think you’re crazy but you have to remember it is a name (through friends and mermaid) associated with evil. I would not name my daughter [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] but if I ever met someone with the name I would probably think its cute

I’m glad I’m not the only one! I love [name_f]Ursula[/name_f]. I agree with pp that I’d pair it with something more mainstream in the middle. [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f], [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f], [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_f]Claire[/name_f]…something like that.

I only have the huge, purple, octopod sea witch in my mind when I hear the name [name_f]Ursula[/name_f]. It’s a pretty negative association, and it would be like naming your daughter Maleficent or Cruella or your son Jafar. Sorry, but I personally just wouldn’t. And then, it’s just really not a very pretty name, imo.

However, personal bias aside, if you really love the name and aren’t bothered by the association…well, it’s your list, so who’s really to say what should or shouldn’t be on it but you?
If you do, I would agree that something sweet, flowery perhaps, and common in the middle spot would work best.

I went to school with a girl named [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] and she loved her name i say if you love it use it

I actually used to [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Ursula[/name_f], but it does have a bit of a clunky feel about it. I like the idea of something short and light to off-set that. My first idea was [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_f]Liv[/name_f], but I love the suggestion of [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_f]Claire[/name_f], too. I like it as a mn too, and would love to see [name_f]Liv[/name_f] [name_f]Ursula[/name_f], [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] [name_f]Ursula[/name_f], [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] (or [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_f]Daisy[/name_f]?), or [name_f]Cate[/name_f] [name_f]Ursula[/name_f]… I think I’d lean toward [name_f]Ursa[/name_f] or [name_f]Ulla[/name_f] as a nn, myself, but [name_f]Sally[/name_f] could definitely work!

You’re not crazy (; [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] is just lovely. It sounds so sophisticated but not stuffy, it begins with a cool unique letter and it has a cool meaning. I heard a mom at the park calling her little toddler [name_f]Ursi[/name_f] - bear and was completely unable to repress my inner name nerd like, “OMG, WHAT? Is her name [name_f]Ursula[/name_f]? WOAH, dude, soooo coooool!” maybe freaked her out a little, hehe.

No, you aren’t! I actually love [name_f]Ursula[/name_f], used to know a really posh one who went by Ullie. [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] is such a beauty, and the meaning can’t be cuter. I would do something like [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] or [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_f]Suki[/name_f].

I love it. Went to highschool with an [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] abd she was really nice.

It’s a very lovely name! One I have consider before but the Disney association puts me off.

Some middles (ursula blue would be adorable!)

[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_m]Fox[/name_m]
[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_u]Echo[/name_u]
[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_u]Gray[/name_u]/[name_u]Grey[/name_u]
[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_u]Wren[/name_u]
[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_u]Jean[/name_u]/[name_u]Joan[/name_u]
[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_u]Marian[/name_u]
[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_f]Fey[/name_f]/[name_f]Fay[/name_f]
[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_u]Scout[/name_u]
[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]

As for nicknames, you can always use [name_u]Rue[/name_u].

[name_m]Way[/name_m] too tied to Disney

Thanks for your feedback everyone. As I suspected, it’s a pretty polarising name - even in the Nameberry community which usually favours such names with historical and literary connections.

@bellerose - I’m glad you like [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_u]Blue[/name_u]! I find it quite charming too, and [name_u]Blue[/name_u] is a name I’m now hoping to use in the middle whether it’s a girl or boy. I love that you suggested [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_u]Gray[/name_u] as that’s my second choice (as a family name). I also like [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_u]Scout[/name_u], [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_u]Wren[/name_u] and [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_u]Echo[/name_u]. You have my style down to a tee!

[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] is a great name - strong and striking, but as others have pointed out it also has a very cute meaning. I think [name_f]Ursie[/name_f] as a nickname is beyond adorable! I personally don’t think the Disney connection is a huge deal. She’d probably get the odd tedious joke about it when introducing herself, but I think it’s the sort of thing people would quickly forget about once they know a real person called [name_f]Ursula[/name_f], if that makes sense?

I love the middle name suggestions you picked out too, @minxtruck. [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_u]Echo[/name_u] is especially magical.

I’m not a particular fan of [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] myself, but I think it’s definitely usable. I used to know a girl named [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] and as far as I’m aware she was never made fun of for her name. I do think the Disney connection is a strong one though- it was my first thought upon seeing the name, then again, I loved Disney as a child and [name_m]Little[/name_m] Mermaid was one of my favourites! I don’t think it’s going to fade anytime soon either- young children now are still watching it and it’s a classic.

I really like [name_f]Ursula[/name_f]! I love the “bear” image I get in my head and I also love the thought that it’s similar to [name_f]Ursa[/name_f] [name_m]Major[/name_m] and [name_f]Ursa[/name_f] [name_m]Minor[/name_m]. It also just has a pretty sound to it as well as being a unique pick without being hard to pronounce. I’d say go ahead with it and maybe go with a less bold choice for a middle. [name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps

[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_f]Renee[/name_f]
[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]
[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]
[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_f]Celeste[/name_f] (I love the more obvious nod to the stars)
[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_f]Isabel[/name_f]

I personally dont like it at all. The UR at the beginning sounds the like sound people make when they think something is gross. I also think of The [name_m]Little[/name_m] Mermaid, which is my favourite film, but a horrible character

I have ALWAYS liked the name [name_f]Ursella[/name_f]…think of the actress [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] Andress the [name_m]Bond[/name_m] Girl ([name_f]Honey[/name_f] [name_m]Ryder[/name_m] in Dr. NO). Beautiful name!
