Victor: Classy and interesting or hello, grandpa?

[name_m]Victor[/name_m] is my husband’s current favorite name and I’m completely on the fence. Older sister’s name is [name_f]Petra[/name_f] and I do have to admit that [name_m]Victor[/name_m] and [name_f]Petra[/name_f] make a very cool-sounding sibset. But I can’t say I’m terribly thrilled about the name on its own. I just keep thinking that it’s maybe just a little TOO retro. What do you think?

I know a little boy named [name_m]Victor[/name_m], 4 yo. Its a good name. Maybe it’s because of where I live but here the name is not considered an old man’s name. It’s a name that has had steady but not overly high usage over the years. A classic & a staple.

I like the name, however whenever I hear it I can’t help but think of it in the sense of the word that means, “a winner in any struggle or contest.” That might be what you like about it but I kind of find it arrogant. Although I agree [name_f]Petra[/name_f] and [name_m]Victor[/name_m] do sound really great together. I prefer the name [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] over [name_m]Victor[/name_m]. I feel like [name_f]Petra[/name_f] and [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] also sound really good together.

[name_f]My[/name_f] son’s middle name is [name_m]Victor[/name_m], after my grandpa. I almost wish I hadn’t used it now- I’m loving it so much I could have totally imagined naming a future son it! It’s established but pretty uncommon, quite masculine. It’s pretty fabulous, especially with [name_f]Petra[/name_f]!

[name_f]My[/name_f] mom thinks [name_m]Victor[/name_m] is a grandpa name but I don’t think so. It’s not my favorite name but I do think that it’s nice. I think of [name_m]Victor[/name_m] Frankenstein when I think of the name so it has a black and white, classic movie feel to it. It’s serious, refined, intelligent and strong. I can definitely see it as a young person’s name but I can see why you think it sounds like an older guy’s name.

I’d opt for [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] or [name_m]Vittorio[/name_m].

I’m on the fence. I don’t see it as an old-man’s name (rather classic, actually), but I have always found it really harsh and almost grating. I grew up with a Romanian American family who had a son named [name_m]Victor[/name_m], and I always found him super annoying, lol. He was both a spoiled brat and also one of those kids who are full of themselves, think they’re a regular class-clown, but they’re not funny, and are really rather rude and crass? Maybe it’s just me that grew up with punk kids like that, haha, but he left a rather bitter taste in my mouth when I think of the name. I think it’s a fine, unusual, classic name, though, and [name_f]Petra[/name_f] and [name_m]Victor[/name_m] are amazing together. If you can get into it, I think it’d be an excellent choice for your family.

Good luck!

I think you need a really strong name to go with [name_f]Petra[/name_f] (which I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u], btw.) And I think [name_m]Victor[/name_m] has the strength of meaning and sound you’re looking for. It’s a wonderful name. I have known several of them, and each wore it well. I can totally picture it on a small, dark-haired boy of about 4. Too sweet!
For a girl, I’d love to see [name_f]Nadia[/name_f], [name_f]Noemi[/name_f], or [name_f]Zoila[/name_f].

I think [name_m]Victor[/name_m] fits in well with all the boys named [name_m]Henry[/name_m], [name_m]George[/name_m], [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], etc these days. [name_u]Vic[/name_u] is a pretty cool nickname and [name_f]Petra[/name_f] and [name_m]Victor[/name_m] are incredible together.

Classy and interesting for sure! [name_u]Vic[/name_u] makes it nice and accessible and it sounds great with [name_f]Petra[/name_f].

[name_m]Victor[/name_m] is a wonderful name, very high on my own list, and it really does sound amazing with [name_f]Petra[/name_f].

I think [name_m]Victor[/name_m] is wonderful! This might be more relevant to my home country (UK), but it’s literally just moving out of the grandpa phase these last 10 years, I think, which makes it one of those extremely cool sweet-spot retro names for the current generation of child-bearing folk. Their parents (i.e. the child’s grandparents) will probably object and say “[name_m]How[/name_m] could you give your child such an old man’s name?” (or if they’re polite they won’t say it, but they’ll probably think it). But for the child-bearing generation, and the next generation, this is a very cool name. Our elderly next-door neighbour when I was a child was named [name_m]Victor[/name_m] and I did always think of it as an old man’s name when I was younger, but now I love it.

It is classy, distinguished, sort of traditional and cutting-edge at the same time if that makes sense. [name_m]Victor[/name_m] is a winner (sorry)! It’s great with [name_f]Petra[/name_f] as well. [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t worry about it being too retro, it’s already gained significant popularity in the UK and the USA.

I love [name_m]Victor[/name_m]. The meaning, the sound and the look of the name. It’s strong but not macho, it’s ancient but sounds contemporary, it’s unusual but familiar. [name_m]Victor[/name_m] has it all and he’s wonderful with [name_f]Petra[/name_f].

I know a little boy who’s about 4 years old named [name_m]Victor[/name_m]! He’s seriously one of the cutest kids I’ve ever seen (& I’ve seen a lot! :D). Dark brown curly hair, big, expressive, brown eyes, & the sweetest little round angel face. I don’t think I’ve ever known anyone else named [name_m]Victor[/name_m] & I really don’t know why! It’s really a great name! & to agree with everyone else… [name_f]Petra[/name_f] + [name_m]Victor[/name_m] are wonderful together!

Definitely classy and interesting. This one doesn’t seem like an old man name to me at all.

[name_f]My[/name_f] DH and his mother were incredibly close and my [name_f]MIL[/name_f]’s name was [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] (which I rather dislike) so I’ve been considering [name_m]Victor[/name_m] instead.

Here is what I like about it:

  1. It’s classic, international and easy to pronounce and spell.
  2. As timeless names go, this one seems to be rather under-represented.
  3. I really enjoy that it’s one of those word/virtue names that have melded into the publics opinion as a “proper name” despite its obvious appeal as a word name.
  4. Possibility of the nn [name_m]Thor[/name_m].

[name_m]Victor[/name_m] and [name_f]Petra[/name_f] sound wonderful together.

I love the name [name_m]Victor[/name_m] and [name_u]Vic[/name_u] and find them very sexy.

If a grandpa, a hot one.

well, both!
Yes it is cool and interesting, yes, it predominantly belongs to the grandads right now.
I love it. I would be THRILLED to meet a sibset named [name_f]Petra[/name_f] and [name_m]Victor[/name_m].

I love the name [name_m]Victor[/name_m], I think it’s a fantastic name! I also like the spelling [name_m]Viktor[/name_m] too

[name_f]My[/name_f] youngest cousin (born 2005) name is Wiktor. It was gaining popularity at least since 90s to 2009, when it was 8th; now ranked a little lower, but still popular.
Female form (Wiktoria) was more popular though; constatntly in top 10 since 1999, ranked 2nd in 2001-2008.
