I like my great-grandma’s name, [name_f]Viola[/name_f] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] (although I’ve heard she wasn’t the nicest person to my grandma, who was the eldest of her TWELVE children, so maybe I should look elsewhere for inspiration anyway). I guess I just really like the nickname [name_f]Vi[/name_f], pronounced “Vye”.
BUT, as I was just reminded in the comments section for the name, [name_f]Viola[/name_f] is a conjugation of Violar, which means “to rape” in Spanish (actually pronounced “vee-OH-la” but it looks the same). UGH. Plus, I live near Los [name_f]Angeles[/name_f] and there are many, many Spanish-speakers around here.
[name_f]Violet[/name_f] is pretty, but now all I see when I look at the name is “violate”. [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] is nice, too, as is [name_u]Vivian[/name_u], but I don’t think I’d use either because they feel very trendy at the moment.
Can anyone suggest another way to get to [name_f]Vi[/name_f], preferably with an old-ladyish and off-the-beaten path name?
Definitely check out the other thread as this has been covered very recently and there were some great suggestions there.
[name_m]Just[/name_m] wanted to say that I actually quite like the idea of Vye as a full name… I don’t know if it’s a “real” name but I think it looks and sounds really appealing.
Other than that, my favourite “old ladyish, off-the-beaten-track” [name_f]Vi[/name_f]- name is the lovely, spunky [name_f]Vita[/name_f].
I’m still kind of sad about [name_f]Viola[/name_f]! Vaiana is kind of interesting, but I truly wonder if I could do it because all of our other kids have very very conventional names and I’ve never met a Vaiana. [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] might work but I doubt I’d shorten it to [name_f]Vi[/name_f]. [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] is lovely but my DH’s cousin just used it for her daugher (such a cutie). [name_f]Viviette[/name_f] is a definite NO from my husband, for whatever reason.
[name_m]Just[/name_m] in case you want a few more suggestions:
[name_f]Olivia[/name_f] / [name_f]Livia[/name_f] (I’ve also recently heard [name_f]Alivia[/name_f])
[name_f]Lavinia[/name_f]
[name_f]Aviva[/name_f] (a childhood friend of mine had this name and she went by the nickname [name_f]Vivi[/name_f])
[name_f]Devina[/name_f]
[name_f]Lovina[/name_f] / Lovita
[name_f]Octavia[/name_f]
[name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] / [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]
Viana / [name_f]Vienna[/name_f]
