What are your thoughts on the name Lorelei?

Something unexpected happened this morning. [name_f]My[/name_f] husband suggested a name for our girl. His policy up to this point had been “pick what you like, and I’ll like it” so this feels like progress!

Personally, I don’t dislike it but it sounds a little “evil” when I think about it. What I like about it is that her dad suggested it and he likes it, and since I basically picked the name for our son, it would be very nice to get our girl’s name from him. I want it to grow on me, and though I still very much like [name_f]Corine[/name_f] and [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] (did some cleaning up and crossed out other names like [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] and [name_f]Minerva[/name_f]), [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] could work.

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you like it? Does it sound evil to someone else or is it only my perception? I would like to know.

I like it! It feels very Southern-friendly to me, not evil at all. Makes me think of [name_m]Gilmore[/name_m] Girls & the [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] [name_u]Montana[/name_u] movie.

I really like [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f]! I would use it but I was told no. :disappointed: Lol
I get where you’re coming from with the “evil” sound because of mythological associations maybe but it doesn’t feel evil to me. It’s beautiful and quite fun to say.

I love it! There aren’t really many [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f]’s anymore so I think that’s a great choice! Although it really does remind me of gilmore girls but that’s ok because it was a great show lol :joy: I also really love [name_f]Cecelia[/name_f]!

I’ve never watched [name_m]Gilmore[/name_m] Girls . I bet my husband hasn’t either. I’ll stream it tonight for sure! I hope the character is at least nice.

I think there are at least two characters with the name. Mother and daughter and daughter goes by [name_u]Rory[/name_u] which is a cute nn too.
I could be wrong but I think they spell it [name_f]Lorelai[/name_f]. I like [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] better.

I feel the same way about it you do; I don’t have any solid objections, but it does sound a little “evil.” However, I’m glad he’s taken interest! Maybe gently bring up the subject of names again and see if there’s anything else he likes, or any similar names you both like. Keep [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] on the table!

I guess it could sound evil but I don’t naturally think of it that way. Personally I’ve been against it for quite a few years until I met a actual [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] and heard how she pronounced it and I’ve fallen in love with it since.

Oh, could you share how did she pronounce it?

Ngl…I totally see how you think it sounds evil, it just feels like the name of a villain on a cartoon. I much prefer [name_f]Lauren[/name_f] and [name_f]Laura[/name_f], so maybe you could compromise?

I don’t understand the evil thing-? I think it’s a beautiful name. [name_f]Laurel[/name_f] is a very similar alternative although [name_f]Loralei[/name_f] seems more unique/distinct

Well, my name is Lauraine, which I don’t love :pensive:. One of the reasons he suggested [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f], besides it being the name of someone he admires and considers a role model, is that the name I chose for our son sounds similar to his. His name is Chaytan, our son’s name will be [name_u]Chauncey[/name_u]. He knows I don’t like my own name, but thinks [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] is similar without it being “the same”, so we can both have a bit of ourselves on the children’s names. Is that vain and selfish? I’m not sure. I didn’t pick [name_u]Chauncey[/name_u] because of my husband’s name, so I’d like to think the answer is no, just a happy coincidence.

Oh of course!
She said it like [name_f]Lore[/name_f]-uh-lie/ [name_f]Lore[/name_f]-a-lie. Whereas I had always thought it to be [name_f]Lore[/name_f]-uh-lay/Lore-a-lay.
And I hadn’t really liked the way lay was pronounced, but I do believe [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] can be pronounced either way. It just depends on what you personally prefer.

I love [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f]! It doesn’t sound evil at all to me! It sounds happy and cheerful. It makes me think of the [name_m]Gilmore[/name_m] Girls which is a good association.

Definitely prefer [name_f]Lore[/name_f]-uh-lie too

Chauncey and [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] are so perfect together! I think it’s cute that their names would be similar to yours. I don’t think its vain at all.

Yeah, I’ve only ever heard it said as lore-uh-lie. And [name_f]Lorelai[/name_f] on GG is great (of course has her flaws, but she’s very charming and energetic)! Highly recommend the show!
