So I have recently fallen in love with [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]. What do you think of it? It was always a name that I dismissed because of the crab from [name_m]Little[/name_m] Mermaid. But, now, I am starting to really fall in love with it. It’s the first boys’ name that has captured my attention in years. I am digging the nickname Bash. Of course, this recent love affair starts right after my husband tells his entire family that the name of our son due in [name_u]August[/name_u] will be [name_m]Henry[/name_m]! I love [name_m]Henry[/name_m] still, but it’s been our top name for so many years that it doesn’t seem as exciting anymore.
Which do you prefer, [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] or [name_m]Henry[/name_m]? They’re both pretty popular and hipstery, which is kind of annoying but it’s not the end of the world. [name_m]Henry[/name_m] has made more dramatic leaps over the past decade, whereas [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] has risen at a more steady pace. Of course, [name_m]Henry[/name_m] probably goes better with our heavy 12-letter surname. Hmm.
I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]! It feels so elegant and sophisticated to me, and you have so many great nn options - [name_m]Seb[/name_m], [name_m]Bas[/name_m], Bash, [name_m]Bastien[/name_m], etc. You could use [name_m]Henry[/name_m] as the middle name.
I like [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] but my favorite boys name is definitely [name_m]Henry[/name_m]. Maybe you could use [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] as a middle name.
I would never say this unless someone was asking what I think of the name, and since you are, I really REALLY dont like it! Sorry! I just dont, yes I think of the little mermaid, but I just dont like the sound of it either, I dont know why! Really like [name_m]Henry[/name_m]. But that being said, its a legitimate name spelled correctly so if you really love it then you should go for it. I vote for [name_m]Henry[/name_m] though
Unfortunately, it’s out of the question as a middle name as we are committed to using my husband’s name, [name_m]Phillip[/name_m], in the middle slot.
@[name_u]Emerson[/name_u]
No worries! I want your total and honest opinion! And, seeing as how I myself am a reformed [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]-lover, I don’t take any offense to your dislike of it.
Such a hard choice! I love both [name_m]Henry[/name_m] and [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], and I think they’re utter perfection together (as brothers, or even in one combo! I think [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] [name_m]Henry[/name_m] or [name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] would be fantastic. :)). Both are middle names on my own list ([name_u]Rory[/name_u] [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] [name_m]Rufus[/name_m] and [name_m]Boaz[/name_m] [name_m]Andreas[/name_m] [name_m]Henry[/name_m]), so I’m not sure I have a clear preference. [name_u]Rory[/name_u] ranks higher on my list than [name_m]Boaz[/name_m], atm, but in general I think I like [name_m]Henry[/name_m] slightly more than [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]. Bash is really cool. I personally love [name_m]Bastian[/name_m] and [name_m]Seb/name_m the most, but I love [name_u]Ash[/name_u], [name_m]Baz[/name_m], [name_m]Bas[/name_m], and Bash a lot, too. And [name_m]Ian[/name_m]. I think I love all of [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]'s nns, lol.
[name_m]Henry[/name_m] as a first name definitely, as it is one of my favourites for a boy. I used to really like [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], but didn’t like any of the nicknames that come from it. It would work well as a middle though. I don’t know if this is the same anywhere else in the world but where I live bash is slang for hit, and so I feel like it would give a child a bad sense of self to be nicknamed “hit”.
I adore [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]! It probably would be my favorite boys’ name if I loved any of the nicknames, but they just aren’t my style. Since we consider a good nickname a must when it comes to naming our children, it doesn’t look like I’ll ever have the chance to use it except maybe as a middle.
I like [name_m]Henry[/name_m] too, but [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] [name_m]Phillip[/name_m] is just smashing!
I’m not a fan of [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]. I’ve always gotten a bored wealthy vibe from it. I prefer [name_m]Henry[/name_m], but I can’t deny that [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] [name_m]Phillip[/name_m] is a great name.
Sorry, but the only thing I think about when I hear the name [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] is the talking lobster from The [name_m]Little[/name_m] Mermaid.
This is my sons name. Although it is the [name_m]French[/name_m] version: Sébastien. It suits him very well. He doesn’t really go by nicknames, on the rare occasion he does, it is [name_m]Ashe[/name_m], which I think is very handsome as well. My family is [name_m]French[/name_m], and my sons fathers family is from Spain, so there are two vastly different pronunciations at work there, while living in [name_u]America[/name_u], he’s addressed by the Americanized form of [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], thus the [name_m]Ashe[/name_m]. I really don’t mind any pronunciation of the name, they are all lovely, but I myself use the [name_m]French[/name_m] form, so it starts with more of a zee sound and the ending is not as smushed. Like Ze-[name_m]Bas[/name_m]-Tee-[name_m]Yan[/name_m], or something to that affect.
I will add…that this is a mostly love it or hate it type of name. So something to think about there, while [name_m]Henry[/name_m] may be perceived as more mild in comparison.
I’m sure you’ll make the best choice, best of luck!!
I like [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] a lot, with a [name_m]Seb[/name_m] nickname. I find it stylish, chic and fun, however, it still reminds me of the crab.
Honestly, [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] LongLastName indeed sounds heavy. What about [name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]?
I infinitely prefer [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] to [name_m]Henry[/name_m] and it becomes very accessible with the nickname [name_u]Ash[/name_u]! I have quite an aversion to [name_m]Henry[/name_m], to me it sounds pompous and I’ve never understood it’s appeal.

I associated [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] with “The [name_m]Little[/name_m] Mermaid” for the longest time. Then, just when I was starting to like it, I simultaneously met a very annoying [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] and read The Mortal Instruments, in which there is a horrible character with the name. That turned me off of [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] for good…
I quite like [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], and I do prefer it to [name_m]Henry[/name_m] (which is nice, but not really my thing).
[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] nn [name_m]Baz[/name_m] is great, imo.
I like [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] [name_m]Philip[/name_m]. I don’t think of the [name_m]Little[/name_m] Mermaid first. My friend and I are obsessed with the show [name_u]Reign[/name_u] and the character Bash/[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m].
