I’ve liked it since I was about seven years old, but at the moment it’s very GP to me.
I wouldn’t do it since it’s a race. Gypsies still exist and it could be seen as insulting to them…
What pp said and I’ll build on it - it’s not at all what they prefer to call themselves or be called. [name]Roma[/name] and Sinti are the terms they self-identify with. They consider pejorative the term “[name]Gypsy[/name]”. So naming your child this is on some levels akin to naming them other racial epithets that are better known to be offensive. Please don’t do it.
Yes, definitely agree with above. I get the appeal, but it should really remain a guilty pleasure. If a name offends people, it probably shouldn’t be considered.
Plus, it’s pretty much the ultimate stripper name- [name]Gypsy[/name] [name]Rose[/name] [name]Lee[/name] was pretty much the most famous person to ever come out of striptease or burlesque. And while some people see her as a very positive figure, I’m not sure she’s someone I’d want people to think of when they hear my child’s name.
I think of [name]Gypsy[/name] [name]Rose[/name] [name]Lee[/name], who while the subject of a fantastic musical, is not the ideal namesake.
I agree with the pp’s. It’s in bad taste.
It’s got a beautiful sound, but I think it’s best to keep it as a guilty pleasure.
I think it’s 100% gp only since the 2 associations it has is anti Romani & a stripper.
I see the appeal though.
Maybe Gitsy, Bidi, [name]Betsy[/name], [name]Patsy[/name], [name]Dulce[/name], [name]Chelsea[/name], [name]Kelsey[/name], [name]Elsie[/name], Frenchie, Ildie, [name]Lacey[/name], [name]Marcy[/name], [name]Nancy[/name]?
what the others said, in spades.
You could consider Tzigane-- it’s Hungarian for ‘gypsy,’ but without the racial slur problem.
Yep I think of the burlesque musical and the people group–neither of which is a positive connection.
It’s a cute name for an animal, not a good name for a person.
I love it, and met a girl named [name]Gypsy[/name] once, she said she liked it. I love it for a boy though. I’d use it, but maybe as a middle name.
I get the appeal of the sound, but I think it’s unusable because, as has already been mentioned, the group that it refers to considers it to be a pejorative term.
@blade - are you sure Tzigane isn’t seen as insulting by the [name]Roma[/name] and Sinti? Zigeuner, the [name]German[/name] term which seems likely related to Tzigane, is considered as bad as “[name]Gypsy[/name]” at least within Germany.
I agree with pp, but I can see why you would like the name. Perhaps [name]Bohemia[/name]?
I agree with what’s been said about the name, and yeah, when I read [name]Gypsy[/name], I immediately thought of [name]Gypsy[/name] [name]Rose[/name] [name]Lee[/name], which I would hate to be named for…
I guess if you truly loved it, you could use it for a middle name, but I think that’s still a bit iffy.
I think these names are kind of similar to [name]Gypsy[/name] (bohemian style, I suppose):
[name]Indigo[/name]
[name]Clementine[/name]
[name]Poppy[/name]
[name]India[/name]
[name]Lux[/name]
Dumb, offensive and borderline racist on an actual person. I can more or less picture it as a GP or occasional (private) pet name.
Oh, maybe? I don’t know… best steer clear then.
@blade - It really may not be, I just don’t know. We’d need to ask some relevant people to find out : D.
[name]Roma[/name] is attractive and has the association with the city of [name]Rome[/name] as well which I think is nice.
PS I think [name]Gitana[/name] and Gitano, the Spanish forms, are also attractive, but I don’t know what the view of them is either.
Thank you everyone, I do agree with what you’ve all said and was not considering it to put on my list, I was just curious to hear other people’s opinions, so thank you.
