We all know the sexism of people giving girls traditional boy names to make them “strong” and they usually don’t go back. [name_u]Dana[/name_u], [name_u]Shannon[/name_u], [name_u]Lesley[/name_u] and [name_u]Lindsey[/name_u] are usually women now. Some names go “unisex” like [name_u]Riley[/name_u].
What girl names do you think could be used on boys of society wasn’t sexist?
Like there’s no reason virtue names couldn’t be used on boys or stones.
We could start with flower names, stone / gem names, virtue names, space / galaxy names (Luna, Andromeda…), names that end in -O (Cleo, [name_u]Calypso[/name_u] for example) nature names in general.
I [name_u]Love[/name_u] and would totally use traditional girls names on boys…especially [name_f]Rose[/name_f] themed names.
[name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f], [name_f]Rosenwyn[/name_f], for example. [name_f]Gemma[/name_f] is another, and I actually only like it on boys. [name_u]Willow[/name_u], [name_u]Eden[/name_u], Faye…
Someone I know had a baby boy [name_u]Eden[/name_u] last year in the UK. So now my tally of known Edens is one girl and one boy. (It currently ranks number 225 for boys here and 91 for girls so more girly but not unknown on boys!)
Any nature name!
Opal
Ruby (especially because of its similarity to Rudy)
Fern
Hazel
Rose
Olive
Lavender
Luna (I actually really love that)
Ivy
June
I think any name that’s not super long could probably work. just because a longer name might seem “frillier” and more “over the top”, which isn’t necessarily bad but would probably be harder to wear (I’m thinking along the lines of Isabella)
Beth
Lucie
Maren
Clare - specifically this spelling
Verity
Hope
Ruth
Tess - ok but Tess on a boy would be so cool
I also really love -a names for boys:
Athena
Vita
Nora
Sierra
Cora
I really believe that any name could work for any gender, even though that might not be realistic. I like names based off of sounds, and sounds just don’t… feel gendered to me? I’d happily use any name for any gender
I think any word/nature/place name could be considered unisex. [name_f]My[/name_f] favorites are [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_u]Jade[/name_u]. There’s other names I like that are traditionally fem (that aren’t nature or word names) but I like as unisex names but those are just names I think sound unisex in general, like [name_f]Elle[/name_f], [name_u]Cleo[/name_u] (a historically unisex name), [name_f]Avalon[/name_f], etc
I love short A-ending names on boys, like [name_u]Alba[/name_u], [name_u]Alma[/name_u], [name_u]Nova[/name_u], [name_u]Vida[/name_u], [name_u]Zola[/name_u], [name_f]Zora[/name_f], [name_f]Fenna[/name_f]
Seconding the idea of nature names! [name_f]Jasmine[/name_f] (or Jasmin) is my personal favorite flower name for boys. I’ve also always loved [name_u]Lark[/name_u] for a boy!
I’ve heard Fern for a boy and I love it!! So I think a boy Faith would work too. I’ve always assumed it was feminine like most botanical names, a male Ivy or Bryony would be lovely too. Also nature names/word names in general.
Stella
Zoey
Valerie
Renee
Tegan
Tabitha
Florence
Freya
Luna
Elsie
Amber
Autumn
Audrey
Lana
Pearl
[name_u]Juniper[/name_u] is one I’ve only ever heard of on girls, but I think it would work well for boys. Maybe [name_f]Nell[/name_f] also? I feel like that sounds pretty neutral!
The reason boys aren’t given girl names but girls are given boy names is absolutely rooted in sexism. Boys cannot be seen as “weak” by being associated with anything “feminine.” [name_f]Girl[/name_f] names are “not good enough” for our handsome, strong, masculine boys. It directly relates to the belief that femininity is bad.
Anyway, I love a lot of “girl” names for boys. [name_u]Hazel[/name_u], [name_u]Harper[/name_u], [name_u]Esme[/name_u], [name_u]Aria[/name_u], [name_f]Cora[/name_f], and [name_u]Lex[/name_u] are all names I have on my boy name list.
Love this thread! I’ve always liked the idea of feminine names for boys, and wished it was a thing…
Agree with so many previous posters — @quietosprey Rose and Rosamund! Yes! @greyblue Iris and Zadie @emeraldsea agree on Ruby — always think this would work for a boy, and even feel like I’ve met a male Ruby, but I think it’s my imagination! @wishmay@katinka also love -a endings for boys — like Dara, a common name for boys in several places, just not the US
My list…
Rose / Rosamund
Iris
Zadie
Ruby
Dara
Asta
Stella
