What's your Japanese name? (For fun.)

As some of you may know, I learn Japanese and I’m really interested in Japanese names. I thought it would be fun to translate your name in Japanese. I could provide an example of a Japanese name that has a similar meaning to your name, or give your name’s closest phonetic equivalent. (Please note that I am not a native Japanese speaker; I’m just a learner. If you spot any mistakes please correct me.)

Let’s say your name is [name_f]Summer[/name_f]. The Japanese word for “summer” is natsu (夏). I believe [name_u]Natsu[/name_u] can be a name on its own, but more often I’ve seen it combined with other characters to make a longer name e.g. Natsumi (夏美, meaning “beautiful summer”). So if your name is [name_f]Summer[/name_f], I would suggest Natsumi as a Japanese equivalent.

Some Western names don’t have nice meanings or they are not translatable. For example, [name_f]Molly[/name_f] is usually said to mean “bitter” which isn’t the nicest meaning (plus I don’t know of any Japanese names that mean “bitter”). In terms of sound, the closest Japanese name to [name_f]Molly[/name_f] I can think of is [name_f]Mari[/name_f], so if your name is [name_f]Molly[/name_f] I would suggest [name_f]Mari[/name_f] as your Japanese name.

If you would like to know what the Japanese equivalent of your name (or your favourite name) might be, please suggest it in this thread. I use Behind the Name for name meanings. If your name doesn’t have a translatable meaning, I will suggest the Japanese name that it sounds closest to.

This thread was inspired by @alatari’s thread on Elvish names. https://forum.nameberry.com/t/you-get-an-elvish-name-you-get-an-elvish-name-you-all-get-elvish-names/373907?u=choupette

I don’t know of any Japanese names that mean breast  but I have found some names that contain the element 白 meaning “white”. [name_m]Kohaku[/name_m] (心白) can mean “white heart”, which is quite similar to [name_f]Bronwyn[/name_f]’s meaning.

I love this idea!
I’ll request the same names I requested for @alatari’s thread: [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] (lily or lilies) & [name_f]Esther[/name_f] (star).

I prefer not to share my name, and the meaning would make it very obvious.

I don’t know of any Japanese names that mean “ash” or “ash tree”, unfortunately. In sound, the closest Japanese names I can think of to [name_u]Ash[/name_u] would be [name_f]Asuka[/name_f] or [name_f]Asami[/name_f].

Ruby is the same in Japanese (though it’s pronounced slightly differently, rubii).

Sutton apparently means “south town”, so I would suggest any Japanese name that contains the element 南 “south” like Namio (南海男, meaning “south” + “sea” + “man”).

Mavis is another name for a bird, the thrush. In Japanese this bird is called Tsugumi.

Thanks! I’m learning more words through looking up these meanings! Water in Japanese is mizu (水). It can be found in names like Mizuka (水香, “water” + “fragrance”) and Mizuki (水希, “water” + “hope”).

@Momofplenty, Sorry, I just re-read your post and didn’t notice you said girl for [name_u]Sutton[/name_u]! In that case, I would recommend [name_f]Minami[/name_f], which is a girl’s name meaning “south”.
